bkorte··on Creators of Tailwind laid off 75% of their engineering team
There is no bait and switch and it's ridiculous to suggest there is.

They have a free product and a paid product. They've used the documentation as an awareness channel for the paid product. The paid product influences and pays for the free product. A tail as old as time.

They're not asking you to buy the paid product and they're not saying they are going to make it worse. Did you even read thread? He literally says "I totally see the value in the feature and I would like to find a way to add it."

Not prioritizing it now does not make the product worse, it just doesn't make it better in this particular way today.

How is this hard to understand?

bkorte··on Creators of Tailwind laid off 75% of their engineering team
When I saw this on HN, I instantly felt terrible for Adam & the team. Happy to see that these comments are mostly supportive, they could have easily piled on the pain.

Listen to his podcast episode if you want his raw feelings on this - https://adams-morning-walk.transistor.fm/episodes/we-had-six...

Very happy Tailwind Plus and Insiders customer here.

bkorte··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hey Peter! What tech (legal and non-legal) do you use?
bkorte··on Is it OK to recline your airplane seat? Some travel experts say no
I've almost had my laptop crushed a few times by people reclining.

I don't hate it if they're actually sleeping, but otherwise it's just frustrating to be behind someone reclining.

bkorte··on Building the New Twitter.com
Is there some kind of cookie hack I can run to get the new UI? Would be nice if engineering posts included a way to change your feature flag so I can experience what is being discussed.
bkorte··on Tell HN: Take vacation
Deal. Heading to Portland in a few weeks!
bkorte··on Ask HN: How do you sell and promote web application consultation work?
Thanks. I like "business applications".
bkorte··on Ask HN: How do you sell and promote web application consultation work?
I've asked a few people that I would put in the same class as my clients, and a couple clients as well, if they knew what those terms meant and nobody really knew.
bkorte··on I dropped over 40 grand when I could have spent $100
But really, the best line from Good Will Hunting is the "how about them apples" line. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmRe_fK7pbw
bkorte··on Automatic: Your Smart Driving Assistant
2 questions:

1) Why isn't this available in Canada? All of our cars have ODBII after 96 as well.

2) Is there an estimated completion timeline? 2 months? 2 years?

bkorte··on Show HN: Telescope, an open-source social news app built with Meteor
After doing a simple project in it recently, I completely agree. Some day it will be, but not now.

Edit: I'm a moron. My comment is about Meteor, not Telescope.

bkorte··on Stripe Would Be Perfect If...
Agreed.

People are sure piling on OP for mentioning taxes -- I think you are all interpreting his request as "Stripe, please add tax calculation" but he's only asking for an additional charges field so he can track his subscriptions + taxes instead of his subscriptions with taxes.

bkorte··on Adobe's Source Code Pro Font
I love Source Code Pro - I keep my editor font size quite large (17-18px depending on the font) and the light variant of Source Code Pro is perfect for the large size.
bkorte··on iPhone 5 web teardown: How Apple compresses video using JPEG, JSON, and canvas
Man, I wish there was a library to help us normal folk do similar things. The ability to do small video on mobile would rock.
bkorte··on Am I An Outlier, Or Are Apple Products No Longer Easy To Use?
I shouldn't have used the words data loss.

Of course it isn't, but he should have backups of his iPhone.

bkorte··on Am I An Outlier, Or Are Apple Products No Longer Easy To Use?
So, your device hit an edge case bug. Why aren't you talking to Apple? They'll have a fix for it, get you to bring it in or send it in.

Worst case scenario your edge case cost you some data loss.

That certainly doesn't mean their products are no longer easy to use.

bkorte··on Thoughts and Observations Regarding Yesterday’s iPhone 5 and Music Event
I think the vast majority of what Apple does would be considered "safe".

But to me, where you see safe I see refined. They focussed on building them better. They focussed on putting in the different radios, better/larger screen, while keeping consistent battery life. While making it smaller.

Just because there's no NFC (of arguable real-world usefulness, and I'm sure that's not what you're talking about anyways) doesn't mean its not innovative.

Apple doesn't really innovate on hardware features very often. They put capacitive touch in the mainstream with the original iPhone. They pushed HiDPI displays into mainstream with the iPhone 4. They redefined the tablet computer form-factor with the iPad.

Why change a great thing?

bkorte··on Thoughts and Observations Regarding Yesterday’s iPhone 5 and Music Event
Shame on Apple for building something light.

Why is it a bad thing that they've innovated to the point where they can get the level of quality they're happy with and lowering the weight?

bkorte··on HP introduces new Apple iMac
"Post-mouse era"? Really?
bkorte··on Predicting the “iPad Mini” internals
I see commenters here are misreading the word "Predicting" as "Announcing".
bkorte··on Apple Wins Patent Ruling As Jury Finds Samsung Infringes
You do understand that businesses exist to make money, right? Profit share is one of the few metrics that matter.
bkorte··on Apple and Samsung Should Fight in the Marketplace, not the Courtroom
Go look at devices before & after the iPhone was announced. If you still think it wasn't revolutionary, you're a moron.
bkorte··on Responsive Design Myth
In my experience it's 30-40% more expensive, but I try to make the responsiveness fluid from min to max, instead of targeting certain breakpoints so I might be spending a bit more time than others.
bkorte··on Dribbble’s Position on Spec Work
"I was interviewing two accountants to decide who I would use."

And this is what makes it a bad analogy to spec work. Spec work is when you say "You 10 people make me a logo, and I'll pay whoever makes the one I like best." Did you get two accountants to do your taxes and then pay the person who served you best? No, you spoke to them first, interviewing them, having them explain why they're best for the job and how they handled certain other situations. This is how it's supposed to happen in the design world too.

You need a logo designed? OK, let's talk about how I can make that happen and what results I've had in the past and how I can serve you best. That's how a mature and respectable industry does business.

(rambling rant over)

bkorte··on PHP Addiction
Where did he say anything about scaling in the article?
bkorte··on PlaceHold.it A simple image placeholder service
Love it. Been using it for a couple years, in fact, used it today.

Lots of little features like:

http://placehold.it/940x315/b03e1f/fff

Where the size is 940 x 315, the background is #b03e1f and the foreground is #fff.

http://placehold.it/940x315/b03e1f/fff&text=foo

Same as above, but the pixel size in the image is replaced with "foo".

bkorte··on Crockford on Bootstrap's semicolon omission: “insanely stupid code”
Oooh, developer drama.
bkorte··on Codename: Svbtle by Dustin Curtis
They are super subtle, how are they even remotely distracting?
bkorte··on Amazon.com redesign
It's actually not bad - it's likely too complex to make it responsive all the way down to mobile, and they have a mobile site for that function, but it fits perfectly for those browsing on different screens.

I just wish they'd make it fixed width. The site's barren on my wide monitor.

bkorte··on Learning from competition
This doesn't happen often enough.
