bjourne··on Things that apparently cause cancer
"Over the last several months, we have replicated the results of these papers. The authors supplied us with eight lines of code and answered a couple of questions about the covariates, which did not replicate the results. Most of our replication was done through first principles combined with trial and error. Once we were reasonably close to the results of the first national study on cancer mortality, we took the methodology and applied it to numerous other landmarks."

Author implies that Alwadi et al. was not forthcoming with sharing the data underlying their studies. Because otherwise they should be able to exactly replicate their results. "Reasonably close" does not cut it.

bjourne··on When oil prices spike, where does the money go?
It's a very very basic tenet of economics. When you pay more someone earns more. Someone is always profiting. Many times it feels like the most important task of media is to obfuscate this fact.

bjourne··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
You are 100% right but I think your arguments will fall on deaf ears. Someone bribed Trump or one of his cronies to revoke pollution limits and they got it. What to do when rationality just isn't a factor in politics anymore?
bjourne··on Whoisinspace.com/
Call me crazy... but there's something about their faces. Almost like all of them are brothers and sisters. Creepy in a way.
bjourne··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
No, reduce has exactly the same time complexity as map and filter.
bjourne··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
It's because it reduces data dimensionality. From 2d to 1d and from 1d to 0d (scalar).
bjourne··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
Maybe you are misremembering the story? += deferred concatenation requires lazy strings and that didn't come until 10-15 years later. However, concatenating string lists with sum() was a common Python idiom at the time and it indeed incurred O(n^2) complexity. Gvr's reduce dislike was more about its syntax. It doesn't mesh well with Python's lambda syntax.
bjourne··on Ask HN: You have unlimited resources, what software would you build?
Free, usable, non-toxic, decentralized social media.
bjourne··on Rope, twine and thread: Invisible technologies of the Stone Age
Isn't the sex => baby causation well known even among monkeys?
bjourne··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
Shutting down => Not building new ones. All decommissioned reactors would have reached EOL by 2025 anyhow.
bjourne··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
Power generation is 25% higher with 6 than with 12 reactors. Plenty of scaremongering around volatility, though. Consumers don't realize that one-hour price spikes are completely irrelevant since they pay monthly (or even quarterly) AVERAGE prices. Max, min, mean, and standard deviation. People don't know statistics and are so easy to fool by demagogues.
bjourne··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
The bottleneck is the grid, not the production centers. Volatility is not more extreme in Sweden than other connected (Nord Pool) countries. Companies lament the lack of grid connectivity all the time. Then they get the offer "Pay for the cost of grid expansion to connect you" and they are not so interested anymore.
bjourne··on Tell HN: Hacker News datetimes are falsely precise
Indeed, it is also imprecise since the timestamp does't include the timezone. :)
bjourne··on Ask HN: Would you read a statistics textbook?
Do the exercises. The end.
bjourne··on “Next-token predictor” is the wrong mental model for LLMs
The argument is that a modern LLM cares little for the MLE. Hence, statistically speaking, they are not predictors.
bjourne··on Formalizing Fermat's Last Theorem
A meme free of charge for you, sir: https://www.reddit.com/r/singularity/comments/1jl5qfs/its_ju...
bjourne··on Formalizing Fermat's Last Theorem
Yep. There may be only 25-50 people alive today in the whole world who can credibly claim to understand Wiles' proof. Now we add an LLM to that list. Absolutely mind-blowing stuff.
bjourne··on Ask HN: Laptop or Desktop?
> Ever since I got a laptop I've had recurring neck pain and issues from not being strict with desk setups and using laptops here and there instead of at a table.

Continue what you are doing and eventually you will get chronic debilitating pain.

bjourne··on Asked Reddit support to give me API key so I can delete my data. They refused
Alas. it's not enough. My account got banned ages ago but all my comments are still there. Apparently, the only way to delete your comments is to delete them one by one. Undoubtedly that only hides them and they still live on in Reddit's comments database to be sold to every paying data broker.
bjourne··on Harvard Professor on Why You Should Learn C in 2026 [video]
Right, if you are not using dictionary definitions of words we define words differently. Though I should have clarified that I meant "Failing to learn linked lists, sort algorithms, memory allocation, etc, ..."
bjourne··on Harvard Professor on Why You Should Learn C in 2026 [video]
C is great for a course on computer architecture. C helps you understand how variables and procedures map to stack frames, how segments map to local and global variables, and how it's all data (i.e., machine code). But it's decidedly not a great first language. Learning linked lists, sort algorithms, memory allocation, etc. in C is for many students a traumatic experience. Far better to introduce these concepts in Python, JavaScript, or C# and then lower them to C.
bjourne··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
You think it is obtuse because your lies are being called out.

FotE was founded by David Brower, Donald Aitken, and Gary Soucie as its Wikipedia page and multiple other sources corroborate. Emphatically, it was not "entirely formed by fossil fuel interests". Hence, your claim is a lie.

Moreover, Robert O. Anderson donated a large portion of his fortune to philanthropic causes. Among them, an art museum and a literary magazine. $200k was chump change to him. Anderson's philanthropy was his own personal interest and had nothing to do with the "fossil fuel" industry.

So unless you want to make the rather dubious claim that Harper's Magazine was bankrolled by the fossil fuel industry, you have nothing.

bjourne··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Holy fuck, Batman. No one's interested in that LLM verbiage. You made specific claims. Claim A:

"Environmentalist groups were in some cases entirely formed by fossil fuel interests."

It's clear from context that you're talking about genuine organizations and not astroturfing. So far you've not named a single one that was "entirely formed by fossil fuel interests."

Hence, pure fiction.

bjourne··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
That's pure fiction. Cite your sources.

> I'm not sure if Clarkson's farm has much of a following outside of the UK. Last year they had several crops fail due to the drought over summer and honestly this year was far worse.

The Clarkson who ran a popular car show and for years mocked Greta Thunberg and called her an "idiot" that deserved a "smacked bottom" for raising the alarm on global warming?

Oh, noe, I feel so sorry for him. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!

bjourne··on Creepy Crawlies
> They still do that — welcome to the wonderful world of “proxy SDK monetization.” It's big business, and your TV is probably doing it.

I must be missing something. How can using peoples' TVs as bot farms be even remotely legal? Especially when the purpose is to avoid IP blocks?

bjourne··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
I'm uninterested in bot answers. You claimed label X applies so consequence Y applies.

Useless.

Why is providing people with the means to express themselves to an audience wrong? Please think for yourself; don't resort to labels.
