bjoe_lewis··on Front End Development Topics to Learn in 2019
I have to agree with you. The shiny stuff syndrome is spreading like cancer in the front-end world.

The only way to set this right is: when you create something, don’t sell it as a one size fit for all solution. State the tradeoffs as loud and clear as possible. Guide the users on what point you necessarily need the library and point them to simpler alternatives when needed.

This is something I deeply respect about Dan Abramov. He did this with Redux. Now that he’s in React, I see a lot of this culture in React docs as well these days.

Bottomline: The responsibility is on the creators to stop spreading this shiny stuff syndrome.

bjoe_lewis··on Ask HN: What new or hot technology do you recommend learning?
+1. Learning C is not about learning a language. It's more about how to think like a computer.
bjoe_lewis··on “Was isolated from 1999 to 2006 with a 486. Built my own late 80s OS”
Different generation. Couldn't afford a computer until 2008. Got a celeron clocked at 1.2 Ghz with a 128mb physical memory and 20Gb HDD running a win98. This was when everybody in the neighbourhood was playing Assasin's Creed in their core2duo.

If only my machine ran all those amazing games, I wouldn't have been a coder now ;-)

bjoe_lewis··on Ask HN: What is the most important lesson you learned this year?
Anything - simple or complex, can be explained. If you are not able to explain something to a child, then you probably don't know about it well enough.
bjoe_lewis··on Show HN: Front-end framework optimized for internal apps
I tend to like typeform more, for anything form-like. (http://www.typeform.com/)
bjoe_lewis··on How I reverse-engineered Google Docs to play back any document's keystrokes
For more information about the grammer/schema for document operations, which is actually what is transmitted in the /save call of gdocs,

[1] http://wave-protocol.googlecode.com/hg/spec/federation/waves...

[2] http://code.google.com/p/wave-protocol/ - wave protocol project (initiated by google, now maitained by apache) is the root from where gdocs adopted OT.

bjoe_lewis··on Ask HN: What (side) projects are you working on?
I've been working on http://vanitypro.herokuapp.com

The easiest way to announce new stuff and updates to users/customers of webapps.

Something like what Intercom does, but simpler, better and easier.

P.S: What's live now is a working v0.001 MVP. More to come, yet.

bjoe_lewis··on What is it like to be a geek in a prison?
That was a nice read.

How exactly did your "felonious history" affect your career?

Just curious, do the world of startups and hackers, actually bias on things like this?

bjoe_lewis··on Ask HN: Which daily habit has affected your productivity the most?
"Avoid HN" can you elaborate?
bjoe_lewis··on Android Bootstrap
I was looking for something exactly as this. Say, you want to building a quick-quick app for quick.com, supposedly native. This might actually work.
bjoe_lewis··on The PC is not dead, we just don't need new ones
If only Paul let me vote twice.
bjoe_lewis··on Bad Indian Programmers
> Working at a small firm is very low prestige, unlike here. You want to have a big name you can tell to your prospective father-in-law. There are of course big, reputable outsourcing firms there, but they tend to either be hiring mills with low quality, or expensive enough to negate any labor arbitrage advantages.

+1 for putting it out.

bjoe_lewis··on Bad Indian Programmers
Thanks, for pointing out. Updated with a more sane bullet.
bjoe_lewis··on Bad Indian Programmers
Meanwhile in India,

+ A guy who thinks programming is about taking a course and passing a certification exam, gets hired in iGate as a software engineer along with a bunch of other mechanical engineers

+ An OS class staff thinks real world softwares are created by drawing logic in Rational Rose and clicking 'generate code' button.

+ A guy who's good in cracking maths puzzles because college told them to get good at it, for cracking interviews, gets placement orders from five different software companies.

+ A guy who convinces his staff to build a cross platform app development framework for his final year project gets put off, because the staff wants a 'big' multipage project with a close button on the right top.

+ And finally a bunch of hackers, give shit about the rest of the country and is either trying or helping to build the next big thing in coffee shops and tech startups.

bjoe_lewis··on Ask HN: Would you hire a coder just by looking at GitHub contributions?
well, honestly and with a guilty tone I write a lot of code, work on projects and do stuff, close to good at github. But, when put to test on my ability with time limits and sneak peeks, I do tend to forget why I'm writing that loop for.
bjoe_lewis··on Gistblog – a blogging platform for Github users
A very simple and useful project. Infact, I built a custom blogging system using gists for my own blog, a couple of months ago! http://joelewis.herokuapp.com
bjoe_lewis··on The new Bootstrap 3 grid system
+1. span12 and span6 makes much more sense as a class name, than a col-lg-3 or a col-sm-6. If they are stealing from the foundation, and if differentiating large and small grid was the cause for changing identifiers, then I'm against it. Other than that, I'm liking it already.
bjoe_lewis··on How well do you know HTML?
29/39 is damn good, it seems. What's yours!
bjoe_lewis··on Tell HN: Hug a Startup - Morpheus Startups hiring event in Bangalore on Jun 9th
Freshly passed out hacker, pythonista, and Django-ist. Everything fits except, that I'm based out of Chennai. Sorry.
bjoe_lewis··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (June 2013)
SEEKING WORK - Remote or Local, India and ready to shift if necessary.

I'm a hacker, freshly out of college, but my love with software and programming is pretty dated like 4 years. I love to build software for smartphones, Android currently being my girl. I often flirt with Django based web projects as well.

If you want a hot headed fresh hacker ready to learn almost anything, and build the next big thing, here I am.

Is this guy a, genius?
bjoe_lewis··on Students are the victims and culprits of India’s broken higher education system
>To pause for a moment, here is the problem with me talking about this topic: right now many Indians reading this are starting to feel defensive.

No, we are not. We both know it is broken. You definitely should've taken a glimpse into Engineering Education and you would have died, except if it's not the IITs.

bjoe_lewis··on News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier
yes. but wait, I developed an [android application](https://github.com/joelewis/emotionreader/bin/emotionBBC.apk) that categorizes news by emotions, so why not just try to ignore the anger, sadness and fear sections of the app and read the rest?
bjoe_lewis··on Want to learn to code? Start here.
>forget codeacademy

That's a good phrase.

Though it does a great job mastering you in syntax and semantics, with which you could solve trivial problems the world's never going to face, real learning comes from setting up a dev environment in your machine, and diving in. Learning from mistakes best apply in learning to code, more than any other context.

bjoe_lewis··on Worst CAPTCHA Ever
D&B. Trolled.
bjoe_lewis··on Zuck, Bill Gates, Jack Dorsey In Short Film To Inspire Kids To Learn How To Code
Seriously, do you think inspiring the students with the amount of money, 'they' earned with code is a good idea?
bjoe_lewis··on Ask HN: Help a fellow hacker - drop out and get a job or get the CS degree?
Simple and Obvious. option 'College' for safe life and option 'drop-out' for a rough, but potentially satisfying one. But, this is so depending on you whatever the say is.

It's way too hard to find people who question what they actually do in college, people who realize the vast ambiguity and time-waste trying to do what 50 other people in the same class and 1000's of others in different do (atleast here in my region of space).

In that way, you score high.

So, if you feel college is stopping you from doing something incredible, do your thing under its roof and once your stuff is worth more than the degree, drop out.

If you just feel college is a waste of time, with no other plan, then you are on the wrong track.

bjoe_lewis··on Why we don't hire programmers based on puzzles and tricks
Ok, this is true story and has nothing to do with my credibility. Few days ago glenwood systems, a core product developing company conducted a recruitement drive in my college. There was me, a coding geek with all my passion for one thing, and there was him, who is a puzzle freak. They selected him past the first two rounds full of puzzles and math, finally rejected him knowing his programming incompetence. And they missed someone who really could help. me. There are a ton of books out there teaching you how to crack interview puzzles and programming riddles. There's no book telling you to get your hands dirty with projects and code. The author is right. Hire the one who did things, not the one who learnt to crack puzzles.
bjoe_lewis··on Can I become a developer from scratch at the age of 26?
Quick answer would be definitely, yes. Infact, formally educated programmers took it up simply because they studied it. That said, modern startups and organisations are starting to pay attention to works done by one, than academic excellence, while hiring. Go ahead, stack your github with projects that prove your worth, get your hands on some open source projects to earn a bit of popularity and chances are companies will find you by your work.
bjoe_lewis··on In China, Betting It All on a Child in College
Yes it is. It felt home reading the chinese family's whole story. It's common teachers and lecturers here do tell, that studying and getting a Job is everything for the amount of money paid.
