bjconlan··on Codebase as Database: Turning the IDE Inside Out with Datalog (2020)
This is a well composed idea. This reminds me slightly of (Rich's?) Codeq https://github.com/Datomic/codeq although codeq is only outlining code/scm relationships and not syntax trees etc. I think I was always hoping codeq would add something like this (for doing what you are doing to validate forms) but the input mechanism probably needed more hammock time
bjconlan··on Jack Dorsey Texts Elon Musk (March 2022)
I've always wondered about this.

Migrating users off twitter seems like it might be simple (ie 1 click migration via oauth and apis to migrate tweets and followers I'd imagine). I think the carrot doesn't need to be all that big these days as twitter splits up their user base with paid and unpaid users as well as far too many ads in all streams (sans add blockers).

Heck I think you might even be able to post back to Twitter if the user migrated to keep un-migrated followers in the loop. (Although it's been a while since I've looked into their API).

I don't really know how you would motivate the cross section of people who have ad blockers though as I think this is the critical part (ie what is less friction).

You also need to probably have some relevant marketing (ie the Opera/Aston effect) to pull in the significance to start the fire too (this might be organic given the generational "not your parents thing")

Come to think about it. If you could overlay the graphs you might not need to assimilate but be a valid competitor making it less of a winner takes all.

Although come to think about it in that case I think perhaps APIs would be shut down to close this vector of competition.

bjconlan··on Bouncer – Private SMS Blocker
This is a pretty good proposition for people across devices. This is the one feature I've been expecting to see in a keynote for the last few years but alas. This seems like a good compromise (Google's incoming SMS/caller spam identification is still the most compelling reason to stay on its platform (but I'm a 'mom and pop' style device user who's app averse)
bjconlan··on Horizon Linux: arm64 Linux patched to run programs for the Nintendo Switch
Its funny that both of these things happened at almost the same time but reminds me of the chat found earlier today https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32458744 which has some great comments regarding this and the (g)libc relationship.

Thanks for also pointing this out.

bjconlan··on John Carmack: Best Programming Setup and IDE – Lex Fridman Podcast Clips
Yeah when he said this it I couldn't help but think of Sean Barrett/nothings.org coding videos. I was always shocked by people using VS6 post 2003 but it provides 50-75% of what people want from an ide these days. (A big proponent is inline debugging as mentioned) but I don't recall intellisense on this version, only keyword colouring and non trivial header exploration... Makes everything look bearable these days (even if run from a browser UI)
bjconlan··on AppLovin bids $17.5B to acquire Unity
This is a real shame. Meta is a company that is trying to do something (beyond Facebook) and I think a Unity acquisition would benefit both of these companies (in their current positions).
bjconlan··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
Yeah I was thinking this... Does codex provide other directed sources of learning. I guess I should look deeper into textsynth/Bellard's gpt stuff as it would be nice to have some specialised learning here like only http level interfaces with client server or whatever... But a rails like gen probably gets me there way faster
bjconlan··on Why the full stack engineer is problematic (2020)
I completely agree. I don't expect everyone on the team to be like this but having seniors that are is very important. This subdivision of tasks does result in an "over the fence problem" and people need to work both sides (all sides might be a bit much but having people work at least partially beyond their title is something which is overlooked)
bjconlan··on Ask HN: What developer tools would you like to see?
Yeah, this was my problem (we have many Mac users so my liberal use of 'xdg-open' wasn't appreciated (I'm sure it was more than that I didn't have a Mac to test it against'.)

A move to devcontainers helped this but dictated some ide behaviours (majority of devs are tried and true jetbrains people) so changing they way they use their tools made this a 'no sale' so again like the wiki my scripts sit idle. But I dream for the day a `curl ${url} | bash` can solve these teething issues

bjconlan··on Ask HN: What developer tools would you like to see?
I think something that relates to the pain of onboarding with unique configurations for core tools used by developers would be useful.

To be specific I wish I didn't have to forward a developer to an already obsolete wiki page then nod and smile as they complain/tussle with the experience/vernacular/context of a document that has no owner.

I think this is a bigger problem (which could be mine and mine alone as everyone seems to really like wikis) but I think being able to seed the developer environment with all the tooling config could help stave off (some of) this pain.

So my thoughts: a simple cli related flow gen tool which could generate this interactively. (And could also verify correctness)

Tools that I can think of from the top of my head that need to be configured to handle user config and private repo location(s) are git, docker and mvn/gradle/npm (etc, I figure all package management tools usually need this).

I like the way https://github.com/trailofbits/algo Works to collect configuration in this respect (Using ansible) as well as how eslint does it (I think using https://github.com/gkz/optionator) For setting up base config in the cli.

Anyway hope this helps seed an idea or at least might identify a problem (not sure how lucrative it would be though)

bjconlan··on HTTP Cats
Thanks! I was trying to work out who this was and their relevance in the picture. I thought perhaps it was something 'Darker' than a Fahrenheit 451 ref.

I feel an obligatory 'Joe Exotic' reference should be considered here (but goes against the housecat vibe)

bjconlan··on Ask HN: How many of you are running FoundationDB? Are you considering it?
It was earmarked as the new couchdb backend but from the looks of things these efforts have stalled.

I should review the technical issues that were discovered as it felt like a good direction based on comments read across related hn comments.

(After a quick google I found https://lists.apache.org/thread/9gby4nr209qc4dzf2hh6xqb0cn14... which provides some high level details)

bjconlan··on How do you say SUSE?
Educational and fun. Nice one suse
bjconlan··on Ask HN: If you were making a tiny social network site, what stack would you use?
This is great advice (And in particular points out the harrowing tale of careful choices that need to be made in a 'clean slate' business).

This is a hard balance to make. Technical choices influence the kinds of staff you would want working for you but you also need to prolong/balance the interests of said staff from moving onto the next thing. (I'd love to know how businesses do this beyond just more money and share schemes but maybe this kind of thing just needs to be built into the plan)

bjconlan··on Aro: A C compiler written in Zig
Andrew Kelley literally did a twitch vid this morning covering something inline with the goals of this project... The zig community seems pretty good so I'm sure everyone's efforts will be celebrated (as all community work should)
bjconlan··on The Kilobyte’s Gambit, 1k chess engine with Queen’s Gambit pixel art
Damn, I just got hooked on this and was hoping someone on here would have already done a line by line translation of how this is possible. Time to brush up on common ai techniques (or perhaps the old dark arts) either way this is both very humbling and inspiring.

(Scanned the Oscar Toledo github/site and found this for anyone else interested https://nanochess.org/chess4.html)

bjconlan··on Meshtastic: Open-source, off-grid, hiking, climbing, GPS mesh communicator
Yeah, this has been my experience too. Generally you use the frequency that has been legalised for use in the region you operate it in. I wonder if this automatically switches to the suitable frequency based off coordinates (when using a gps’d board) I’m sure it would be trivial to implement. Ah good ole opensource. This really is a great solution, riding around New Zealand the only solution is a SPOT tracker which charges like a wounded bull so I love that this is disrupting this space (and using clever tech - heck might throw one of these on the moto just to use it for security)
bjconlan··on Defold engine code overview
As a side note and credit to the parent author I really appreciated the work you did and helper libraries you provided (it helped me learn a lot about some of the greater functionality that the defold engine provided. I also think the choices made for this engine were under appreciated at the time (and still are given its lack of notoriety) I thought Kings move to give it a much more liberal licence might have put it in a place competitively (for 2d at least) to Godot, but I guess their momentum and ambition overshadow the great work everyone who has worked on defold (and surrounding communities has done) - not to say godot isn’t an amazing accomplishment in its own right (which it is and their ide alone a testament to the quality of craftsmanship)
bjconlan··on JetBrains Compose
This looks interesting, having skia as the drawing foundation and reactive as a core element sounds like they’re rewriting a flutter like framework but on the jvm instead of dartvm. Jetbrains sometimes dogfoods their products so I hope to see this technology exercised into utility
bjconlan··on WebGL procedural city that feels alive and is fun to watch
Maybe update the title to include 2017, original HN post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15795204
bjconlan··on A small but complete JavaScript engine
His own emacs mode (https://bellard.org/qemacs) I don’t think he uses it anymore but I always found that the best side effect of concise/elegant (minimal) code (or perhaps goals/scope) is generally better performance (I think this is also partly because of a single author understanding a lot more of a ‘product’ than a team)

Also wanna throw Mike Pall & Arthur Whitney in there as an honourable mentions (productive gods/100x)

bjconlan··on Better Than JSON?
From recollection it’s the native data transmission format for Datomic (which is driven by Cognitect/Nubank). I think there is a little bit more to the bias’ of EDN (mostly driven by language preferences in this case).
bjconlan··on Ask HN: Advanced Linux users, which distribution do you run? Why?
I'm surprised I haven't seen a https://clearlinux.org/ user/recommendation yet. I found it pretty good. I would probably pick it up as the base of any docker images (or alpine where appropriate) I would need to create. (Usually server/java based hosts) As a daily driver but went back to windows/wsl2 (ubuntu 18.04) mostly for better battery + gpu/igpu management. (XPS laptop)
bjconlan··on Defold game engine source now available and free to use for commercial games
Wow, this will hopefully ignite a sleuth of creativity. I think their choice of using lua to script while also having a pretty great user experience (in v2 and v1) should put them on the radar for most indie developers now. Hopefully this also creates some friendly competition with godot (though I think they have the momentum) but for 2d prototyping for programming novices, I'll always recommend defold. Kudos King.
bjconlan··on Special K: an interactive K compiler that generates GLSL
Wow his is cool. Very nice work! Apl's seem like the perfect fit for this kind of thing and feels like a great way for people to cut there teeth on something like k. Hopefully the syntax will become a moot point since 1/2 the code I love reading are algorithmically terse (and clever)... I hope this gets picked up by the demo or 'tweetcart' like scenes. Theyre always a source of inspiration.
bjconlan··on Show HN: Craft.js – A React framework to build any page editor
I love this idea for CMS related content and layout. I question the overloading of the 'Canvas' tag but love that you've spent time grooming the projects structure and documentation. The best possible starting blocks to push off from for onboarding trust and quality from developers looking to including such a library.

Nice work mate.

bjconlan··on Clojure: `every-pred` and `some-fn`
This can all be covered by more abstractions though via some schema/spec/type validation process. Ide integration is the interesting problem here (and typescript does this beautifully) but I agree horses for courses (and experience). I think the idea for using the keyword to hold the nullability of a field interesting, I thought this was more of a meta attribute in clj? In saying that I actually find this style of keywording way easier to read.
bjconlan··on Godot Engine – A decade in retrospective and future
Yeah, I thought this too and was thrown off by learning a proprietary language but I found it didn't really get in the way both because of its familiarity and simplicity with talking to the event system and scene graph (as you would expect). Any shortcomings I found were clearly identified and documented. (Mind you this was a basic parallax game so was a shallow dive). It's really a hard thing to balance and can understand why c# would be choosen to perhaps deprecate this (but this choice I think is mostly from unity's success (and convertible user base)
bjconlan··on Satya Nadella Added $850B to Microsoft
It was pointed out recently that in this year's product lineup apple have started responding more actively to customers (it was also noted that these are post Ive too so there might be something in that)
bjconlan··on Java's Cover
Yeah, I'm also curious about how ruby would have faired. 15 years ago it was sillycon valleys poster child (but without being too harsh was actually a very good citizen and had perhaps had the best open and active community the internet era may have seen to date). It had many of the points corrected that have been outlined without stupid amount of corperate support java/.net have seen
