bizkitgto··on The Dark Side of Techno-Utopianism

bizkitgto··on Welcome to Shanghai, the capital of the future
China also slaughtered 20 million people in the Culture Revolution just for questioning communism.
bizkitgto··on Welcome to Shanghai, the capital of the future
You're kind of ignoring the giant elephant in the room - China is a authoritarian regime, and Emperor Xi recently declared himself Emperor for Life. Criticize Emperor Xi and be sent to the gulag. Not to mention the new dystopian Chinese Social Credit System. Did we forget about the millions of deaths resulting from the Cultural Revolution? Is China a country you would choose to live in for the rest of you life? How about your children?
bizkitgto··on Can experienced oil and gas engineers move into tech?
Thanks, I'll take a look. Any you recommend?
bizkitgto··on Does sex addiction really exist?
You hear the stuff about porn addiction more and more, and it will be interesting to see how the generation raised with online porn fairs in the dating area and how they turn out. One side effect reported has been erectile dysfunction from excessive porn usage.

Nice! Are you still working in your non-tech day job, or have you switched careers? I’m thinking of learning Rails as my first foray into programming.
bizkitgto··on We Need More Pessimistic Games
It's those deeper philosophical questions that we struggle with, and once we have the right 'question' the search for the answer is what drives most people. But those answers are mostly elusive or non-existent. And that makes people very unhappy.

What were you suggesting? Other than topical (still stops natural growth), there's no way to significantly boost T.

That's awesome!! How long did it take you to go from zero to launching your website? Did you do this on your free time (were your working full time)?
bizkitgto··on Ask HN: What's was the hardest part about starting to code?
The hardest part is the constant jumping around between tech just to get something simple working, it's overwhelming. First you need to learn HTML and CSS...easy, oh wait you need to learn Bootstrap too, fml. Then Javascript...no JQuery...Coffeescript, Typescript? Don't forget React, it's mandatory for web development now. Back-end, well you need to learn NodeJS. Actually, all that stuff is a waste of time - just learn Ruby on Rails.

There is too much stuff coming at you all at once - it's like trying to drink from a fire hose.

bizkitgto··on Ask HN: What's was the hardest part about starting to code?
Longer study sessions
bizkitgto··on Ask HN: Is Ruby on Rails still worth learning?
Thanks for the recommendations!
bizkitgto··on Ask HN: What's was the hardest part about starting to code?
Is there a reason you can't just pick up a book today and immerse yourself into it to learn? What book would you recommend someone read, if they wanted to self study?

Just out of curiosity, how did you learn to code on your own and what did you build?

Nah, someone will steal your work and get credit. Big companies are full of passive aggressive co-workers who won't think twice to screw you over.

> Being heroic isn't always saving the planet. Sometimes it's just waking up the next day and going to work.

Going to the cubicle and banging out TPS Reports day in and day out isn't being heroic, it's being passive, living life on auto pilot. I hate it. And so do most people who are aware of what it's doing to them.

> And before the mid 90s, Apple was in constant peril of being wiped out.

People always seem to forget this fact!

Your testicles will shrink, and your body will stop naturally producing testosterone over time as you continue with the testosterone injections - basically, once you start it has to be for life! Be careful doing this.

Is software making us better or lazy?
bizkitgto··on Delete Your Account Now: A Conversation with Jaron Lanier
> People aren't that stupid. They know what they're trading for these great free products we all use.

I would say the average user has no idea what exactly they are trading for.

bizkitgto··on Delete Your Account Now: A Conversation with Jaron Lanier
We don't need social media...or software to live happy lives.
bizkitgto··on Ask HN: Ex-FAANG developers, where are you now and why?
Big companies are all this way, people don't realize it before they work in one - you are just a cog.
