bitskits··on Pixel 8 Pro
...Especially considering the trade in values (~320USD for Pixel 6).
bitskits··on Signal was experiencing technical difficulties
Outages?
bitskits··on Eight Tons of Punk
Great point. So true.
bitskits··on Eight Tons of Punk
Glad to see that the superiority complex of the scene is still alive and well...

Everyone needs an onramp to discovery. There are WAY worse things to be into than Green Day. But please, don't let me stop you from telling Hacker News how you're too punk for Green Day...

bitskits··on China’s CCTV network took just 7 minutes to capture BBC reporter (2017)
Exactly. HongKongers dont consider themselves Chinese.

bitskits··on Chaos in Hong Kong as hundreds of masked men assault protesters, journalists
Is that really the right course of action, given the protests are a push back against China asserting control and surveillance over HK's citizens?
bitskits··on I just had over a thousand Euros stolen and Revolut is siding with the thief
Yes, they do.

bitskits··on Support for U2F security keys
Not sure when you last checked, Vanguard supports up to 4 security keys.
bitskits··on Xg2xg: Lookup table of similar tech and services for ex-Googlers
Within Google there are several tools, but the most common (and IMO best) is markdown. (Docs is a close second.)

Pros: Get's checked in like code, gets reviewed, and leaves a nice paper trial of edits.

Cons: Doesn't invite comments/discussions as well as Docs does.

bitskits··on Noisy: Random DNS, HTTP/S traffic noise generator
Is this intended to be a solution for people who are unable to do DNS-over-TLS (which seems like a much better solution to this problem).
bitskits··on DDG: Google uses bizarre tactics to dominate rivals and confuse their customers
I never said it was fair play, I disputed that it was a "bizarre tactic".

There is a trademark angle to your example, so if DDG has a Trademark argument, they should challenge (although "duck" is pretty broad, so I doubt it). Otherwise, try to snipe the domain like the rest of us.

bitskits··on DDG: Google uses bizarre tactics to dominate rivals and confuse their customers
I'm not sure that I agree that owning a domain is a bizarre tactic.
bitskits··on Android container in Chrome OS
I disagree on the "more electron" front. Running old Chrome with known vulns packaged up into an app is not the direction I'm looking for ChromeOS to go. I'll take an app in a tab, please.
bitskits··on VPN Report – Reviews of the top VPNs
Sad to see AirVPN excluded. While their website isn't the most elegant I've seen, it's not user hostile enough to abandon altogether, IMO.

It also seems a bit odd to rate VPNs on their specific technical merits and features, and then disqualify for their homepage UI or sign up flow. I'd venture most VPN customers would tolerate a lot of ugliness for a truly private, secure, and reliable service. I would.

bitskits··on Ask HN: Google Doc email virus?
I'm pretty sure that changing your password does NOT revoke your oauth scopes, which was the attack vector here.
bitskits··on Ask HN: Google Doc email virus?
Yes, I agree, although revoking the scope should remove the access (and I assume Google did that for everyone already).
bitskits··on Ask HN: Google Doc email virus?
What attack vector does changing your password help with? Are you concerned they could have recovered the account password via the Oauth scope?
bitskits··on Walking in L.A.
California native here. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone say this about LA. Most generalizations usually go the other way; this is new.

To be clear, all the generalizations are bad, IMO, but this perspective is new, and I think maybe the least accurate.

bitskits··on The closest I've ever come to falling for a Gmail phishing attack

bitskits··on Uber Now Tracks Passengers’ Locations Even After They’re Dropped Off
There are several counterpoints to your opinion that Uber is a bastion of values and respect. Here are a few (excluding the many incidents involving drivers):

1. Your CEO refers to the impact of his company on his sex life as "Boober". https://pando.com/2014/02/27/we-call-that-boob-er-the-four-m... 2. Uber orders and then cancels thousands of rides of its biggest competitor, Lyft. http://money.cnn.com/2014/08/11/technology/uber-fake-ride-re... 3. Uber exec threatens a journalist Sarah Lacy with a smear campaign. https://pando.com/2016/05/04/npr-proves-once-again-uber-lyin... 4. God mode: Insiders tracked users personal movements and were fined 20k for misusing their access. http://www.theverge.com/2016/1/6/10726004/uber-god-mode-sett...

Your closing statement is spot on: it's not easy to believe "nothing nefarious is going on". For me, it's not even possible.

bitskits··on DDoS Attack Against Dyn Managed DNS
Google's OpenDNS servers are not down, they are recursive resolvers, and are not getting data from Dyn's authoritative resolvers. OpenDNS caches DNS data for longer than other recursive DNS providers (they call it smartcache, IIRC), which is why they are still working.
bitskits··on Google Reveals It Received Secret FBI Subpoena
This is sadly true, but I think we also need to reject that this is the new normal. We need to continue to push back firmly on secret government request without oversight.
bitskits··on Dead Man's Switch
This would be a brilliant long game phishing attack. You have regular emails with links arriving that people think they have to click or bad things will happen. Not saying at all that's what this is, just that the thought popped into my mind.
bitskits··on A New Explanation for One of the Strangest Occurrences in Nature: Ball Lightning
Minor nit: shocked, not electrocuted, since you're thankfully still with us. :)

Electrocution is death by electric shock (that's the '-cution' part, like execution).

bitskits··on I’m not a human: Breaking the Google reCAPTCHA [pdf]
This is a little pedantic and doesn't change your point, but Google is not an LLC. It's a C Corporation.
bitskits··on WhatsApp is blocking Telegram links
Some settings in the latest Android beta of Signal indicate this is being worked on.
bitskits··on Encryptr – Free, open-source password manager and e-wallet
Does Encryptr support 2FA? I don't see any mention on the landing page or on Github.

EDIT: After more digging, it looks like it does not, but may in the future. https://github.com/devgeeks/Encryptr/issues/123

bitskits··on Today is the end of sheloshim for my beloved husband
Her thoughts on what makes mourning, and specifically the interaction with other people so difficult, are really enlightening. It reminded me that each person experiences life differently, even when we are all united by the same feelings of satisfaction, love, frustration and grief.

My deepest condolences to Sheryl, as well as anyone else who reads this who has lost a loved one. Life is both amazing and delicate, and I think we could all focus a little more on the little things that make all the difference. I know I could.

bitskits··on A Murky Road Ahead for Android, Despite Market Dominance
I assume you're comparing only Nexus devices, because the breadth of Android devices in different sizes is by no means limited.
bitskits··on Introducing Google Cast for audio
