bitserf··on Show HN: Spendy – a simple money tracker (iOS app)
Good job shipping! This was the kind of app I first worked on as well, but I never ended up putting it on the store, and kind of lost interest halfway through porting it to iOS 7 :)

The Add Transaction screen was pretty much where I lived in my app (http://imgur.com/DobW80r), so good work keeping it simple and efficient!

Some feedback:

* Might be worth making the user's current currency (you can get it from NSLocale) the default currency so that out of the box on first use they can start entering data, it's not great to have to go to settings first time you use it.

* If you must stick with hamburger menu, consider making the view tappable everywhere and not just on the hamburger icon, to dismiss it. Though I would argue it's worth using something like UITabBar to switch between log and charts if charts is something you use a lot.

* When tapping on a transaction to bring up the context buttons, consider allowing tapping anywhere on the screen to dismiss it, not just on cells.

* Consider a custom input view for the amount field, here's an example of what I did for my app (http://imgur.com/yp27cxK), gets rid of the ugly "dialer" style ABC/DEF/GHI annotations. More maintenance though.

* Understand its for you mainly, but tag editing would be nice :)

* When you have a couple of thousand transactions in there (I had 20,000), being able to quickly whip up some adhoc queries for interesting stats becomes a lot easier if you have an SQL backed data model, and I used SQLite+transactions just because I was paranoid of some stupid bug corrupting all the data. Knowing myself, I would delete an app the first time it lost any data.

However, long term, I think the solution for this kind of app is direct integration with banks (one of the reasons I lost interest, because I started getting super tired of typing in the data on a phone)!

Best of luck, and keep on iterating! Never forget what the first version of popular slick apps looked like, a lot of them were pretty basic.

bitserf··on Explaining iOS 8’s extensions: Opening the platform while keeping it secure
The mechanism underlying extension points (XPC, remote views), is pretty general, I would be surprised if the initial use cases were the end of it.

ActiveX is pretty much a poster child for what happens when you rush this kind of feature, so, hopefully the assorted security vulnerabilities will not occur with Extensions.

bitserf··on Apple Confirms Its $3 Billion Deal for Beats Electronics
In general, perhaps not, but for a specific example, iCloud storage.

At a minimum, there should be enough storage for a full backup of each device.

NZ$125/year for 50GB is, to put it mildly, somewhat subpar.

Don't need symlinks. Just set the CDPATH environment variable!

Also set up case insensitive completion, saves the extra shift press for all those Mac paths.

bitserf··on Why isn’t New Zealand richer and more productive?
Outside of Auckland, it's reasonably affordable. In Auckland, the average price is quite high relative to incomes.

Most of my friends who entered the market recently were looking at prices of between $650k-$850k for something smallish in an OK area.

This was for houses which were not new builds (70s/80s) and would need a bit of work to get up to scratch (insulation, plumbing, kitchen/bathroom remodelling).

So I've just been sitting and building equity and cash reserves. Who knows when/if it will return to earth, but I don't feel comfortable leveraging up that much, so as a single buyer, I'm sitting this one out.

bitserf··on Clean, Modern Objective-C
I'm a heavy user of properties in other languages like C#, but in Objective C, to define the anonymous category with all the property ceremony and verbiage, feels...excessive...if all you need is some private state, and you don't care about generated accessors or KVO.

Why are ivars bad, exactly? They're a lot more succinct if you don't actually need what properties give you.

bitserf··on On Google's Acquisition of Nest
Are they capable of shifting from device centric thinking?

Feels like Google has a lock on the talent that could help Apple build out their capability here.

They'd need to take services seriously as well, for starters.

bitserf··on Does life end after 35?
I agree entirely. It's amazing how tone deaf one can get to this advice, people kept giving it to me.

I'm 33 (soon to be 34), and fitter than I ever was in my 20s, with more energy.

Difference? Eating differently (low carbs, high protein), and exercising 3 times a week.

I also stopped smoking a year ago.

Quality of sleep is also way up there now.

bitserf··on When Batman isn’t available: Crowd-fund
Coming from a country where private security and completely private healthcare, and living in secure 24/7 guarded enclaves is how you secure for yourself the kind of lifestyle most Americans enjoy, I'm not sure dismantling government is the solution.

This kind of stratification feels very familiar.

The privileged forget the hidden costs of civilisation, the little safety nets ensuring misfortune for the few should not be a life-ruining event, forget their own massive position of safety and security, therefore, what is government but a useless edifice impeding profit and efficiency.

Are we not all self made men who raised ourselves from the cradle, catching our own food, building our own cabins, driving on roads we made, teaching ourselves from first principles?

bitserf··on Important Customer Security Announcement
Those are the Adobe responses to Australian government when queried about the discrepancy, correct.

Not sure how much localisation is required since Australia, like New Zealand, is an English speaking Western democratic country.

Pretty sure we could understand US vernacular and cultural differences.

Call it what it is: Discriminatory pricing because they think that is what the market will bear. Fine, but I feel free to work around it as well.

bitserf··on Important Customer Security Announcement
Well, pretty happy I bought Lightroom through Amazon right about now.

Reason: Adobe charges basically double the US price in Australia/NZ if you buy from them directly, and I refuse to pay a location tax since it costs them zero dollars extra to send me bytes through CDNs.

bitserf··on Show HN: Dead simple Hacker News reader for iOS
I just bought it, because I like where you are going with the design.

However, I would echo the need for comment support.

Check out how http://hn.premii.com/ does comments, I find that quite readable compared to news:yc.

The ability to log in and reply to comments would round out the use case that I used to use other apps for.

bitserf··on Fingerprints are Usernames, not Passwords
If Find My iPhone is on, that locked phone is essentially a brick, it cannot be activated even if completely wiped, since its still associated with your Apple ID on the server side.

You need to be able to sign in with the Apple ID to remove the association.

bitserf··on The iPhone 5s Review
Its their discipline that impresses me: How much they are willing to play the long game, and take short term hits to do it.

While getting hammered by Wall Street and the press for not innovating, they stick to their guns and keep evolving in incremental steps, and laying the ground for the innovation they want to do in the future.

For example, current iPhone battery life isn't the greatest compared to some of the larger phones out there that are packing much more battery.

But they keep making small efficiency improvements, over and over, so that if (when?) release a device with a larger battery, it will be like the MacBook Air situation, where the MBA gets staggering battery life on the next hardware iteration compared to competitors that have just adequate battery life, basically being carried by the hardware.

I imagine the larger display is a similar situation, they're not happy with some compromise they'd have to make to produce a display of the larger size, whereas competitors are happy to pump something out that is better by some metric (PPI, size), but has adverse effects (battery life, color oversaturation, artifacting).

I think Google has the ability to continue competing with them if they remain focused.

I have my doubts about any of the other Android manufacturers, though Xiaomi could be interesting in the future, due to their focus on services.

bitserf··on SQLite 3.8.0 Release with next-generation query planner
Why would you want to use PostgreSQL in the contexts that SQLite is used?

SQLite is fantastic when you need a data store for mobile or embedded use, you'd like ad-hoc queries over your data with the option of adding indexes to speed up frequently used ones, you want transactional update to the data, and multi-user access is not a problem.

It's basically a much better replacement for the hash table on a disk approach of DBM libraries.

PostgreSQL would just be total overkill for this kind of scenario.

Interesting, what is the reason for the growth in Latin America compared to elsewhere? Does Nokia have a strong brand there?

Works even better when you pin that to the home screen as a faux app.
bitserf··on Teaching Someone To Code Is Partly A Hardware Problem
Regarding typing, I don't know if this is an actual phenomenon, but I've noticed that some programmers I've worked with who had problems touch typing seem to have had more attachment to the code they've written, than those for whom typing is a fraction of the effort.
bitserf··on Treaty gives Hong Kong option to reject Snowden extradition to the US
I don't see a downside for Hong Kong/China in rejecting an extradition request.

Cynically, it's leverage and they'll have the moral high ground in the eyes of the world.

bitserf··on Collection of the best fonts for programming
Well, I've never really quibbled over the price of a font if I liked it. I bought PragmataPro as well, a few years ago, and used it for quite some time.

Answer is, Akkurat Mono looks rather nice on Retina, going to use it for a while and see if its one of the classics like Inconsolata.

bitserf··on The hypocrisy in Silicon Valley's big talk on innovation
Or my favorite, buying revenue through acquisitions and then asking existing employees to take one for the team with pay freezes and austerity measures because of the subsequent impact to margin.
bitserf··on Why are payment forms so complicated?
Not just you, I've yet to have a card with a non numeric month. Instead of being friendly, putting month name is a usability loss. Are cards with names instead of numbers the majority in the US?
