bitdivision··on A fundamental principle of aeronautical engineering has been overturned
The FAA still requires ashtrays in bathrooms interestingly. To avoid those who do smoke there using the trash and causing a fire:

Regardless of whether smoking is allowed in any other part of the airplane, lavatories must have self-contained, removable ashtrays located conspicuously on or near the entry side of each lavatory door, except that one ashtray may serve more than one lavatory door if the ashtray can be seen readily from the cabin side of each lavatory served

bitdivision··on GB Renewables Map
Very cool. Thanks
bitdivision··on GB Renewables Map
What are the black dots around the map when you zoom in? For instance South-East Wales / Bristol, I see a few black dots that look like they cover shaded areas or something. They also show up at the sites for wind farms, possibly they're the turbines themselves?
bitdivision··on UK government launches fuel forecourt price API
Looks great. Interesting to see that a lot of stations are included but without prices.

Note, in brave on linux I can't see the map. Console has a lot of 401 on stadiamaps. But works great in chrome.

> From 2 February 2026, you must submit fuel price updates within 30 minutes of any change.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/report-your-fuel-prices-and-fore...

So looks as though the requirement to report was only just introduced, hence the considerable missing data.

bitdivision··on A4 Paper Stories
I happened to be looking at ski boot fitting this morning and came across a web app from fischersports that allows you to measure your feet using your phones camera. Surprise surprise it uses a sheet of A4 paper.

App is about halfway down this page, https://www.fischersports.com/rc4-podium-rd-worldcup-strd/U0... under 'find your size' and is powered by https://volumental.com/

bitdivision··on In Northern Scotland, the Neolithic Age Never Ended
They were supposedly invented in Scotland, and I've not seen them sold in an English fish and chip shop. Go to Scotland however and they're not uncommon.

I don't think that's true, however doordash surely know that some users might think twice if they saw that number separated out.

bitdivision··on Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs
Sure, it's a different part of the product, but still worrying that it may have happened at all.

Looking at it further though, you're right, this probably wasn't apple's fault.

bitdivision··on My iPhone 8 Refuses to Die: Now It's a Solar-Powered Vision OCR Server
True - how much someone is willing to pay matters. However in a competitive market, companies can’t just charge whatever people will pay. Competitors will undercut them, so prices should eventually align with the cost of production plus a reasonable margin.
bitdivision··on I used AI-powered calorie counting apps, and they were even worse than expected
Presumably the recommended daily calorie intake figures (and the calculators for these) do to some extent take this into account? i.e. I would imagine they're based on experimentally tested values rather than theoretical energy expenditure.
bitdivision··on The scientific “unit” we call the decibel
But that's why it's so confusing. Did they purposefully leave off the reference to indicate Watts, or did they mean volts (as I'd guess audio engineers typically do when talking about amplifiers).
bitdivision··on The scientific “unit” we call the decibel
No, because db is logarithmic. That's the key property that allows you to do addition instead of multiplication. Remember these are ratios here as well.

So the original example in linear units would be: We're reducing the signal by 63% in the this cable, and the gain through this amp is 199.5%, so the output is...

0.63 * 1.995 = 1.26

126% which is 20log10(1.26) db or around 2db.

-4 + 6 = 2 is a little easier to do.

I don't think it is. PWM_BIAS is used as the select for the analog switch. High connects COM to B1 (GND) and low connects COM to B0 (BRIDGE_SUPPLY).
