bitdivision··on Wealthy people are renouncing American citizenship
You seem to be making a lot of assumptions about who is giving up citizenship here. Obviously there are some high profile people who are still highly involved with the US, but I'd imagine a lot of folks doing this are those who don't live in America and don't want to deal with the hassle and cost of filing US tax returns every year when they earn no money in the US.
bitdivision··on European Parliament approves mass surveillance of private communication
I have not been able to find anything about final legislation either, though I did find some references [0] to the chat control legislation from June: [1].

I haven't read through it all, but the notable paragraph seemed to be:

This Regulation therefore provides for a temporary derogation from Article 5(1) and Article 6 of Directive 2002/58/EC, which protect the confidentiality of communications and traffic data.
'derogation' being a partial repeal of a law.

Edit: It does seem that the intention here was to allow tech companies that were previously scanning for child abuse to continue to do so after December 2020, see politico.eu article

bitdivision··on Irish police to be given powers over passwords
The UK has a similar law [0], which has been used in the past to prosecute people for not disclosing their passwords [1].

bitdivision··on Irish police to be given powers over passwords
The UK does indeed already have similar powers under RIPA [0].

bitdivision··on Ferrofluid display cell Bluetooth speaker
Nice! I assume that was just ferrofluid and water?
bitdivision··on Ferrofluid display cell Bluetooth speaker
I can't see the video, but if it's the same idea could you give some details on what you used as a suspension fluid and how you dealt with the smearing on the container?
bitdivision··on Ferrofluid display cell Bluetooth speaker
I experimented with making a clock using ferrofluid previously. I was inspired by this clock [0] but put off by the price tag.

Generally the main issues I found were that it degraded over time and I had real trouble with ferrofluid smearing on the container.

Will have to try again now!

bitdivision··on Flying a drone into a volcano
Another one of these videos [0] popped up on reddit [1] the other day. This time with an FPV quad. I think it's a better video, though no report on the damage.

bitdivision··on Kubernetes is deprecating Docker runtime support
It will still run docker containers, they're just deprecating the Docker runtime, which is more of an implementation detail
bitdivision··on Please – A cross-language build system
I came across the Pants build system [1] the other day, which looks like it shares some similarities. Though currently very specific to Python.

The value proposition is also a bit more clearly defined there [2]

bitdivision··on IoT Unravelled Part 1: It's a Mess but Then There's Home Assistant
I've redone my house with Xiaomi Aqara [1] switches. There are options for neutral / no neutral. I've had absolutely no problems with them. I did have to install a couple of deeper back boxes on a few switches. It's not as bad as you think, just a bit messy to deal with the brick dust.

Haven't had a single issue with them being unreliable over the past year or so I've had them.

I don't understand why his statement was wrong. GMT does not change according to daylight savings time as far as I know?
bitdivision··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
I would say the exact opposite. I found MATLAB painful to work with at university. Using python for everything after that has been a breath of fresh air.
bitdivision··on Kindle collects a surprisingly large amount of data
I still can't find the original post I read, but the guardian wrote about this recently [1]

bitdivision··on Kindle collects a surprisingly large amount of data
I can't find a reference to it now, but I recently read something referencing the massive quantities of kindle data amazon give you when making a GDPR data subject access request. I think it was something like 100k rows of data for one user.

Perhaps I should do that myself.

Edit: You can request your kindle data here (UK version): https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/privacycentral/dsar/preview.html

bitdivision··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
I agree there will be huge variance. I'm only suggesting that if you model growth of assets as well as a wealth tax then your numbers will look different.
bitdivision··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
I don't think that's a fair comparison.

The article does not model asset growth in any way, and if you do model asset growth you would get significantly different numbers.

bitdivision··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
Because if your asset is growing at 5% and the wealth tax is taking 1%, your asset is still growing overall

Looking at their website they have GDPR forms for employees and for clients, but they don't have anything for Joe Public, not sure if this is because they don't 'own' the data themselves?
bitdivision··on Git commit accepts several message flags (-m) to allow multiline commits
You can also just add a line break inside the ""

e.g.

git commit -m "Short commit message

bitdivision··on Why Is This Website Port Scanning Me?
They're almost certainly doing it as part of a heuristic to detect bots. Hence the VNC / RDP ports. I would assume it's quite common for bots to have those ports open so they can be monitored

There's often an option for whether to store CC info for future purchases. I assume that's what GP is referring to.

I wouldn't be surprised if they stored it anyway though

bitdivision··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
Regarding the whole privacy thing - this is the "If you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear" argument. There's plenty of information around on the arguments for and against [0].

bitdivision··on EU to stop changing the clocks in 2019
I rarely have to deal with changing a clock. The real pain is having to deal with DST and strange timezones while programming.

bitdivision··on LastPass’ Authenticator app is not secure
Most people will only use the password manager app. I didn't realise they make a different authenticator app and assumed that this was about the password manager.
