bitcartel··on Google removes AdBlock for Android from Google Play
I recommend Adblock Edge which is available for Firefox mobile.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-edge/

"Adblock Edge is a fork of the Adblock Plus version 2.1.2 extension for blocking advertisements on the web. This fork will provide the same features as Adblock Plus 2.X and higher but without "acceptable ads" feature."

Agreed, and let's not forget that client side GUI applications like SourceTree help to abstract away most of the common operations.

bitcartel··on (Presumably) Apple engineer comment on Lightning AV adapter design
Yes that's what I meant.
bitcartel··on (Presumably) Apple engineer comment on Lightning AV adapter design
Yes, you can get a Lightning to USB cable for charging and syncing for $5, but to connect to a TV you need to get the Lightning AV adapter which costs $50.
bitcartel··on (Presumably) Apple engineer comment on Lightning AV adapter design
I think the main takeaway is, why pay for a $50 widget when a $5 cable will do the job?

For the consumer who just wants to connect their device to a HDTV, it's crazy they have to pay 10x more just because they're in the Apple ecosystem and not Android.

As for being future-proof, by the time some cool new A/V interface hits the market, and we've all updated our TVs, the Lightning devices of today will be in a museum.

bitcartel··on An Interview with the Guy Who Sleeps in a Different Place on Campus Every Night
Turns out this is a personal lifestyle choice as his parents have actually paid for a room for him.

Meanwhile, there really are homeless students in the US.

"In 2009, 47,204 college students applying for financial aid checked a box that identified themselves as homeless." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/03/homeless-college-st...

"I have had homeless students before. In fact, when the recession began to rear its ugly head the number of students in our high school who lived in shelters grew and grew and grew... Whenever I found out that a student was homeless, the puzzle pieces suddenly fit together -- the fatigue, the sudden weight loss, the increasingly dirtiness of their clothing or unkempt elements of their personal self. "Oh..." I would think, "That's what's going on."" http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lori-ungemah/homeless-in-colle...

Of course, there are also homeless people who aren't even students trying to live on campus too.

"The library at Cambridge University's largest college has been playing host to a mysterious user with a collection of supermarket bags, vague claims of doing a doctorate on religion and a habit of dozing off. The unexpected visitor was the subject of speculation at St John's College over several weeks, according to students, before he was asked to leave by staff after failing to show that he was entitled to use the library or the college's other ancient premises." http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2013/feb/27/homeless-man...

bitcartel··on Here Come China's Drones
The article links to a NYTimes piece[1] where China is said to have rejected the idea of using a drone over a foreign country.

"China considered using a drone strike in a mountainous region of Southeast Asia to kill a Myanmar drug lord wanted in the murders of 13 Chinese sailors, but decided instead to capture him alive, according to an influential state-run newspaper."

They eventually caught the guy and he was tried, found guilty, and executed yesterday[2].

"A notorious drug lord told how he longed for his mother in a chilling final interview - before being marched to his death live on Chinese television. Burmese gangster Naw Kham was one of four death row prisoners paraded before news cameras in China today as they were escorted to an execution chamber in Yunnan province."

bitcartel··on Marissa Mayer had nursery built near office before work-from-home ban
The ban on remote working will hurt the moms and dads of Yahoo the most.

- The US is the only industrialized nation not to mandate paid leave for mothers of newborns

- The US is one of only three nations — the other two being Papua New Guinea and Swaziland - that doesn't guarantee job-protected time off with some amount of income after the birth of a child

- New parents in the U.S. are guaranteed their jobs for 12 weeks after the arrival of a new baby, thanks to the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993, but they do not have to be paid during that time and exemptions apply for small companies.

- Only two states in the country, California and New Jersey, offer six weeks of paid family leave to men and women who are caregivers. Unfortunately, the state leaves are not job-guaranteed

- Afghanistan provide new mothers with 12 weeks off with pay. The Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the poorest nations in the world, offers mothers 15 weeks off with full pay.

- UK provides 90% pay for 280 days, Russia 100% pay for 140 days, Spain & France & Netherlands 100% pay for 112 days, Germany 100% pay for 98 days, China 100% pay for 90 days

bitcartel··on An Unremarkable Event in the Tenderloin
I posted this a few months ago. Worth watching.

VIDEO: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/social-issues/poor-k...

San Francisco is the most expensive place in America to find a home, but that doesn’t deter the 400,000 people coming each year to the Bay Area in search of a new home and a new life.

Eleven-year-old Sera, her sister and her mother moved to San Francisco in 2009. But when the economy collapsed, her mother lost her job and the family now survives on her $600 monthly unemployment checks.

After five months in a shelter and more than a year in transitional housing, the family has moved to a one-room rent-subsidized apartment in the Tenderloin — a neighborhood synonymous with drugs and violence — while they wait for subsidized housing to come through. But they are just one missed rental payment away from returning to the shelter.

bitcartel··on This Is Why You Can’t Have Nice Things, Yahoos
Exactly. Eliminating working from home punishes those who need the option most, Yahoo moms and dads.

Just for the record:

- The US is the only industrialized nation not to mandate paid leave for mothers of newborns

- The US is one of only three nations — rich and poor - that doesn't guarantee job-protected time off with some amount of income after the birth of a child

- New parents in the U.S. are guaranteed their jobs for 12 weeks after the arrival of a new baby, thanks to the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993, but they do not have to be paid during that time and exemptions apply for small companies.

- California provides 60% pay for 12 weeks

- UK provides 90% pay for 280 days, Russia 100% pay for 140 days, Spain & France & Netherlands 100% pay for 112 days, Germany 100% pay for 98 days, China 100% pay for 90 days

Except nothing has changed at the top. In fact, she's getting paid even more than the previous CEO with a package worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Maybe its the Board of Directors who need some shaking up.

bitcartel··on This Is Why You Can’t Have Nice Things, Yahoos
What happened to leading by example?

"Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer built a nursery in her office so she could bring her baby to work, which has angered some stay-at-home employees following her demand that all remote workers report back to the office.

'I wonder what would happen if my wife brought our kids and nanny to work and set em up in the cube next door?' the husband of one remote-working Yahoo employee asked in an interview with AllThingsD's Kara Swisher.

Many employees are upset because they don't have the money or clout to build their own nurseries at work. And many assume Mayer has a whole team of people, from nannies to cooks and cleaners, helping her raise her son - after all, she does have a $5 million penthouse atop the Four Seasons hotel in San Francisco in addition to her $5.2 million 5-bedroom home in Palo Alto."

The number of people aware of this issue is tiny.

At time of writing, neither MacWorld, MacObserver, MacRumors or AppleInsider have covered this story, even though it's been up all day.

You would need Jon Stewart or Saturday Night Live to get on the case before Apple deemed it necessary to respond.
