bischofs··on Running Gemma 4 26B at 5 tokens/sec on a 13-year-old Xeon with no GPU
I don't pay anywhere near 0.30usd in the US - I pay half that off peak and can buy 1000$ worth of batteries to load up on super off peak (0.11usd). Also the inference providers are fighting over market share with huge debt loads so they are definitely going to go up in price.
bischofs··on Apple unveils M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max
They kept mentioning performance relative to intel Macs which makes me think there is a large cohort of people sticking to their x86 rigs due to compatibility. Being able to run an x86 linux or windows VM is still a requirement for me.
bischofs··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
I think this is a problem because a lot of what people use to shop an EV is the headline range number, which you are declaring is not accurate. This is false advertising.
bischofs··on Carmakers don’t need ‘EV divisions,’ the whole company should go electric now
Okay, we will just ignore the 50-70% of customers who do not want an EV now - We don't want their money. Batteries are getting better every day but a lot of people:

1. Don't live in a house with a charger. 2. Don't want to drive to a DC charger and sit there once a week. 3. Can't afford a $60K SUV for their family. 4. Want lifestyle vehicles like jeeps, trucks, vans etc. that require much larger and more expensive batteries.

bischofs··on Russia’s army is learning and improving on the battlefield
The annihilation of Ukraine and the violent expansion of a nuclear armed dictatorship is not a risk in your eyes?
bischofs··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
A system that protects 400 people but kills 1 is not a system that I want on public roads because I don't want to be in the 1 - Elon and the children of Elon are basically making the assumption that everyone is okay with this.

The probability of an accident for any driver assistance system will ALWAYS be lower than a human driver - but that doesn't mean the system is safe for use with the general public!

People like me are not advocating for "killing people" because we aren't looking at data - it's that no company has the right to make these tradeoffs without the permission and consent of the public.

Also if this was about safety and not just a bunch of dudes who think they are cool because their Tesla can kinda drive itself, why does "FSD" cost $16,000?

bischofs··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
Regulators dont care about the perception of a recall, they care about the safety of the consumers and more importantly the general public who have not signed up for Teslas beta program.
bischofs··on Rise of ‘zombie’ VCs as startup valuations plunge
Is this recession going to be like the commercial production of fusion energy? Always around the corner despite nothing indicating we are anywhere near a recession.

Keep in mind it's hard to have a recession when unemployment is in the 3s, and there is still high demand for products and services across the economy. But I guess if we really want to have a recession we can.

bischofs··on Shoichiro Toyoda, who turned Toyota into global automaker, has died
I work at Toyota, and they credit him on day one of training on the Toyota philosophy. Toyota's success is just a function of them listening to western consultants after the war when western companies would not.
bischofs··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
the 24 hours of Le Mans, and tens of thousands of runabout marine applications with automotive engines disagree with you. The real question is would you prefer a 1950s Lycoming engine with a mechanical fueling system, or a modern car engine that has been proven in millions of vehicles?
bischofs··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
What the FAA has done to this guy is disgusting, they don't respond to requests and treat him like a little guy despite the impressive engineering here. I'm not a republican but this is a great example of government destroying innovation and progress through bureaucratic nonsense.
bischofs··on Does the world have enough lithium to move to electric vehicles?
This is such a dumb analysis - Lithium batteries are used in everything - tools, consumer electronics, medical devices, home and grid storage and all of the sectors that will be using it soon. Not to mention if you want to push larger transport sectors and grid de-carbonization you will need massive GwH batteries with 100kg+ of lithium. We clearly need more solutions, stop pushing lithium batteries like they can solve all the world's energy problems.
bischofs··on Rimac Nevera Hits 412kph to Become World’s Fastest Production Electric Car
Performance vehicle engineering trickles down to low cost, consumer vehicles. Thermal, durability, controls, and everything else is pushed to the limits to understand how the vehicle subsystems perform from a first principle perspective. Engineers learn a lot from these vehicles.
bischofs··on Why are Hart Taxis more expensive?
99% of the Ubers/lyfts I've been in are trips to the airport - and most of those cars had worn out suspension, bald tires, or raw wheel bearings. Some even to the point where I wasn't sure the vehicle was going to get me where I was going. It doesn't help that in the midwest the roads are 3rd world quality.

The business model is flawed and I would rather use a company that maintains a vehicle fleet where a mechanic is involved and knows if a vehicle should not be on the road.

bischofs··on Walking Truck
Is this better than a Driving Truck?
bischofs··on The Tech Industry Has a Drinking Problem and It Is Hurting Diversity
"You don't agree with me, I can't change that so please exclude yourself from the conversation"
bischofs··on The Tech Industry Has a Drinking Problem and It Is Hurting Diversity

bischofs··on Toyota Lifts the Veil on Its Guardian Driver-Assist System
Are you really comparing the ISP market to the automotive market?! The global auto market is one of the lowest margin, most competitive markets that exists. You can go out and pick from one of 20 brands in pretty much any segment (cars, trucks, hatchbacks, hybrids etc). Toyota has nowhere near a monopoly on any market except maybe the city that the HQ is in.
bischofs··on Toyota Lifts the Veil on Its Guardian Driver-Assist System
Tesla sold that many in the last two quarters because it was trying to fill a massive backlog of orders. Also VW, Toyota and Nissan/Renault each sold over 10 million vehicles in 2017, so my point that they are not a major automaker still holds.
bischofs··on Toyota Lifts the Veil on Its Guardian Driver-Assist System
Cruise is owned by GM, Tesla has a decent level 2 system but only sells ~100,000 cars a year, and waymo has zero technology in consumers hands at this point. Also most of the automakers have offices and research facilities in SV, with hundreds of engineers working in them.

What lunch are they eating?

bischofs··on Toyota Lifts the Veil on Its Guardian Driver-Assist System
And what is there go-to market strategy? Most cars that people can buy today have active safety features as an option or in the case of Toyota, a standard in all of their cars. How is google technology, which is so advanced, mitigating crashes and fatalities today?
bischofs··on Toyota Lifts the Veil on Its Guardian Driver-Assist System
That is colossally stupid statement, Toyota, Volvo and the big oems have been pushing ADAS features and safety since day 1, with the next logical step being this guardian type of system. Are you saying a company that builds 10 million cars a year has zero incentive to work on active safety?
bischofs··on Detroit's Big Comeback: Out of Bankruptcy, a Rebirth
Not true, the Woodward corridor is pushing north toward New Center and is really nice. Corktown is also seeing an investment infusion due to the train station being redeveloped by Ford and lots of housing development. Check out brush park as well and Woodbridge, downtown is pushing out. Go look at it! Things are definitely changing.
bischofs··on Elon and the collective
Probably some showboating going on, but who cares? Let the guy do his thing; it doesn't hurt me at all and the industries he's in probably need some stirring up.

As for Tesla whether they succeed or fail it's great for the automotive industry - getting the old oem giants off their wallets and looking over their shoulder is great for the consumers.

bischofs··on Elon and the collective
This article started out good but got pretty lazy toward the end. "This idea is stupid" is not a good description.

Also I think Elon is generally looking at problems we have (traffic congestion, expensive space travel, fossil fuel cars) and trying different things to fix them with his considerable funding. Why is this a problem?

It's much easier to criticize others ideas on a blog then it is to generate and execute ideas yourself.

bischofs··on The Missing Computer Skills of High School Students
I would have been so much better off in my CS degree if I would have walked into computer lab in high school and there was just a terminal with a blinking cursor. It took me far too long to clear all the nonsense and finally get to that stage where I felt close to the operating system
bischofs··on With Proton and Steam Play, many Windows games now work on Linux
If you compare specs that is true, but if you actually run the games at 4k on high settings etc, the xbox will be fairly smooth where as the RX 480 will struggle. In reality you need to get a 1080ti to get the same 4k experience, and the new RTX cards are priced way too high.
bischofs··on With Proton and Steam Play, many Windows games now work on Linux
PC gaming is a struggle for me as of now, I have an older rig which I would love to update but simply cant justify the cost. It is pretty frustrating when my friends xbox can run 4k games but the only GPU that is comparable is north of 500$.

The ML and crypto hysteria as well as AMD not willing to compete is not healthy for the long term PC gaming industry. It is certainly keeping me out of it.

bischofs··on IQ Matters Less Than You Think
My IQ is quite low, maybe 85 or less. I'm not smart enough to understand why a bunch of smart people would argue about how unimportant it is to be smart.
bischofs··on Tesla delivered 83,500 vehicles in the third quarter, more than expected
Not really fair, I can walk into a dealer and buy any car from one of those other brands. The Tesla numbers are 1-2 years of built up demand being built/delivered in one quarter. These numbers will definitely not continue.
