birn559··on C++26 Reflections adventures and compile-time UML
Do they point at python 3? They were committed to backward compatibility long before python3 happened.

To me it feels like they have fleshed out key paradigms so that is not a mess anymore. They are not there yet with compile time evaluation (constexpr consteval,...), at least with C++20, not sure if it's mostly finished with C++23/26.

The language itself and std is quite bloated but writing modern C++ isn't that complicated anymore in my experience.

birn559··on C++26 Reflections adventures and compile-time UML
My perception is that C++XY features are wildly used in general. Of course there are some nobody uses, but that's not generally true. So your basic assumption is wrong.

We are at C++20 and I wouldn't like to work for a company that uses an earlier standard.

birn559··on C++26 Reflections adventures and compile-time UML
Most of the time, I will prefer standard C++ over a full hand made layer of complexity that needs maintenance.

What has that to do with the topic? Warren Buffet made billions without any do knowledge about programming or deeper knowledge about computers.

Could you provide sources?
birn559··on Writing memory efficient C structs
Wasn't aware of that, thanks for the link!
birn559··on Writing memory efficient C structs
My understanding is that C++ compilers still add padding by default for performance reasons. CPU will have to spend a few cycles to reorganize data that is not aligned in chunks of 4 bytes.
birn559··on The Tabs vs. Spaces war is over, and spaces have emerged victorious
The problem with this is: 1. It's relatively hard to think it through to the point that you see and have the potential benefits in all cases(*). 2. All participants and tools must fully support the solution. It needs a momentum it never got so the world settled on a simpler solution.

(*) Tabs only and no hard wraps, only soft wraps.

birn559··on Uber will let women drivers and riders request to avoid being paired with men
It's a way to exercise power and/or revenge over a man that you feel has offended you. Some people get offended real fast and out of nowhere.

I do know people that have been / are currently victim of that. Except it goes far beyond simple allegations (after marriage breakup).

birn559··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
Processing by itself is not a bad thing. Everything is "chemicals" in some sense and what you mean in particular is not bad in general.

European bread as of today is highly processed btw.. it's pretty rare to find a bakery that actually bakes starting with the ingredients. Most just bake pre-processed and pre-made stuff coming from a huge factory.

Typical European/German bread is not terribly healthy to begin with.

birn559··on Netflix uses generative AI in one of its shows for first time
I don't think that's appropriate language for HN. We should strive for high quality content but the very least civilized discussions, ideally without sarcasm or one liners that spirals into low quality posts.
birn559··on Why is AI so slow to spread?
Is it really dying? There's only so much growth possible without having it flooded with low effort stuff. They try to instead grow by introducing more topics, but that's limited as well.

I personally didn't use it so much (meaning: Writing content) because it always felt a bit over engineered. From what I remember the only possible entry point is writing questions that get up voted. Not allowed to even write comments, vote and of course not allowed to answer questions. Maybe that's not correct but that has always been my impression.

In general stack exchange seems to be a great platform. I think "it's dying" has an unfortunate connotation. It's not like content just vanishes, just the amount of new stuff is shrinking.

birn559··on Louisiana cancels $3B coastal repair funded by oil spill settlement
Very often, things make much more sense than journalists want you to believe.
birn559··on Congress moves to reject bulk of White House's proposed NASA cuts
Sounds like cutting the budget will make things worse.
birn559··on I Messed Up My Google PM Vibe Coding Interview
It's still quite necessary for everything beyond junior grade code.
birn559··on How U.S. Tourists Are Dealing with a New Animosity Overseas
I am still wondering what the general outcome will be of the new isolationist politics of the US. The world will keep moving on, with the US as a global power and without it. I fear the world will be worse when the US stops being a global power, but we will see (the US itself will obviously be worse off, though).
birn559··on How U.S. Tourists Are Dealing with a New Animosity Overseas
Hate is the wrong word. "Despise" might be a better fit for many. At least in Europe I would think that might be true for the majority of people to some degree. However, that's no reason for bad treatment of an individual.
birn559··on How U.S. Tourists Are Dealing with a New Animosity Overseas
Well, a lot of people voted Trump into power, again. Those people are the problem. However, that's no reason to show animosity against random tourists.
birn559··on 'Positive review only': Researchers hide AI prompts in papers
Wow, that's a terrible second order effect with very real impact on the quality of publications.
birn559··on 'Positive review only': Researchers hide AI prompts in papers
It ends up favoring research that may or may not be better than the honestly reviewed alternative, thereby lowering the quality of published papers in journal where reviewers tend to rely on AI.
birn559··on Sam Altman Slams Meta’s AI Talent Poaching: 'Missionaries Will Beat Mercenaries'
Is that easier to enforce than having AI only trained in a legal way (=obeying licenses / copyright law)?
birn559··on I got an ambulance ride, CT scan and ER care in Brazil. My bill: $0
Do people have to pay when they call the police? Do people avoid reporting a crime because it's too costly? So people have to do fundraising because they can't afford the police to investigate a crime that happened to them?

That's what the US healthcare looks like from outside. "Paying for calling the police? Don't be stupid, dear!" Yes, exactly.

birn559··on Several Anker power bank models recalled: Supplier's batteries pose fire hazard
It is allowed if a 'reasonable priced' paid alternative is offered.
birn559··on Brave creates new TLD on the blockchain
Most HN posts are not protected by EU copyright though. A certain level of intellectual creation is needed for that.
birn559··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
Hamas wants to destroy Israel, they are pretty open about it. They are also not really holding back about their antisemitism. The mass murdering on 7th October pretty much demonstrates what Hamas is about in general.

They also murdered the Gazan opposition after they were voted into power and have not really allowed voting since. They are pretty much not interested in increasing the situation for the people in Gaza. That's also why they are a terror organization.

birn559··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
Could you elaborate? Because it's an Israeli news organization?
birn559··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
Could you provide sources? I would assume 'journalists' are only actively killed if they grab a weapon or conduct similar actions.

My understanding of "actively killed" is thy have been the explicit target of an attack and not casualties in general.

birn559··on Post-Attack Assessment of First 12 Days of Israeli Strikes on Iran Nuclear
For Israel, the strategic goal has always been to stop the endangering of Israel and their citizen by Iran.
birn559··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Israel has also been sabotaging their program and murdering scientists for the same time. Maybe it's an instance of the prevention paradox? Together with the fact that things sometimes naturally need MUCH more time than anticipated?
birn559··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Look up the demonstrations in Iran within the last ten years and/or since 2022.
