birdymcbird··on SFUSD's delay of algebra 1 has created a nightmare of workarounds
‘The system is only failing black and hispanic students.’

What is “the system”? you mean to say the school is racist or unfair to black kids..hispanic kids? who is responsible in your opinion?

birdymcbird··on Why are developers expected to estimate tasks at all?
every business exist to make money or something of value to its shareholder.

You can hire contractor to modernize you kitchen or paint wall.. you need some understanding of exactly what is scope of work, what is $ cost, what is the quality, and any other constraint.

the contractor cannot just say i have no idea how long it will take. there has to be some start and end date.

why some programmer think they do not have to provide any estimate at all is perplexing. is your paycheck an infinite money stream? does your employer not have commitment to deliver something by specific date? or do you want someone else to go create estimate of how long YOU need to complete some work?

this is why tools like scrum come in. estimates not a perfect science..so break down scope of work into small and small chunks until we can say “ok…this piece take 3 days”.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Senior engineers, how do you deal with poorly written software?
staff/principal engineer opinion:

figure out business priority. if something in poor state.. it impacts you personally, you team, organization, overall business?

the higher it blast radius, speak with you staff or principal engineer and raise the issue. sometime tech debt accumulate over time while no one watching. at some point the debt must be paid or innovation will halt.

think closely about what makes it “poor” and what impact this has. i wrote most elegant code (me opinion) that never ship to production.

also worked on old..dusty messy code that go against design approaches. but it ship to 20 million customer and contribute hundred of million USD in revenue. so to say “poor” maybe meaningless at time because it actually make money vs me code that gave negative contribution ($0 earning plus cost of me and my teams time).

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Do the IT layoff and the AI rise correlate?
> You certainly get paid well at those firms (except for one of the A’s) but you won’t learn anything transferable because those firms are profitable because of monopolies (F, G, and 1.5 A’s) or over capitalization (N, half an A, look at the case of Uber, it is easy to sell a lot of half price taxi rides but it doesn’t make money in the long term.)

this is 100% inaccurate and misleading. big tech pay has been 2-3x many other place. even with drop in equity, sr sde at company like amazon earning $400k-450k a year, principal engineer over $650k.

the one big benefit of big tech is ability to learn and grow. they literally incentivize building large scale system to get promoted, even if it mean we now have 2, 3, or 4 thing solve same problem and you new version inferior in some capability.

im big critic of big tech especially amazon me former employer. my post history should prove it. but this post off the mark.

you want to learn and make ton of money? yeah go to big tech. but do not delude youself about doing something positive for world, or that you company care about you, or whatever other fantasy people hold

birdymcbird··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
hr cuts and cuts to other “cost center” no surprise.

from my time at amazon this feel like only small step in fixing so many issues. engineering has too many manager in promotion race..layer after layer of manager..empire building focus and not customer benefit.

step 1 to rid these “professional” managers who not understand technology, installed themself at company for cushy job title and pay. many come from other uninnovative company like ibm.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
maybe you can describe specific example? topics hinted here are broad.

concurrent programming for example also not taught same always. myself in school learned about concurrency like threads and mutex theory but “really” learned first time on job.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Has your view of Silicon Valley changed in the last 72 hours?
Not at all. if my money in svb.. would have ran to pull it out.

too many armchair expert not understand issue effect people who not gamble money but victim of just having deposit.

main issue bankers did not hedge risk of inflation. why helping start ups survive losing all they cash is going to change my mind?

and this country waste tens of billions on bloated bureaucracy government. but a dime to people who will do innovation is bad? disagree

birdymcbird··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
the problem is if I sell my own investments right now at loss nobody will come to pay my obligations. so why large institutions get to reap profit but get out of jail free when they screw up.. one set of rule for common man and another for investor..elite class.
birdymcbird··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
> Who would've thought post-hand-wringing-over-poor-300k-salary-tech-workers realizing their disposability that we would have another event reminding HN just how different the rules are for capital owners than the rest of us.

no offense this comment shows lack of even basic understanding of situation.

SVB collapse a zero impact on big tech workers earning $300k. this problem effect small business, maybe 50-75 employee who did not risk they money. they literally put in bank to do thing like pay employees and other bills.

start up employee is not earning $300k USD per year. start up hardly compete with big tech on any compensation. these people working hardest.. not rest and vest like big tech.

birdymcbird··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
saw their all in episode. definitely did not get signal you described.
birdymcbird··on One Seattle business is taking a stand against tipping mania
East solution..do not tip or do not give business to these places.

If person just hands me my order then me not tip. Shamelessly press 0% on touchscreen.

birdymcbird··on The widespread layoffs are more because of copycat behavior than cost-cutting
> “We should expect this to also be true in business. A lot of companies were hiring during the pandemic, so everybody decided to hire. Now, companies are laying off, and everybody decided to follow each other and lay people off. A lot of this is just imitation.

maybe companies had increased demand during pandemic? and companies selling cloud service saw more demand because zero interest rate policy mean more businesses want to take loan and spend freely on cloud infrastructure? Or maybe businesses spend freely online advertising? now rate continue to climb. world is different. cheap money regime no longer reality.

this opinion piece not even close to reality. written by someone who appear not to understand how businesses work. maybe private company should function like government apparatus and keep unnecessary head count, as long as it mean profit not negative? maybe next year we just increase taxes and continue pumping money because business is just a massive charitable jobs program for ceo to get re-elected? yes rhetorical statement.

with rising rate and no end in sight, proper thing to cut excess fat from businesses. focus on value and trim out moon shot idea or area in business that not give revenue. good to prepare and do EARLY and not wait to when company already bleeding.

the truth in situation is many tech company especially big tech have massive grift executing at scale. workers who paid hundreds of thousands of USD in salary plus stock compensation to not do meaningful work. fake economic class of worker.

musk pulled mask off this grift and everyone else followed. good on them. does this author realize 70% or more of Twitter employee fired. Twitter still work for me decent. See more new features now than last 6 year. so exactly what “critical” job all these people have?

birdymcbird··on U.S. inflation stays high as housing costs bite
Make perfect sense. Thank you
birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Does 'cheap' offshore (non-NA) talent exist?
sound cynical and most people think business cannot succeed if they do like this. but you can. you can build over $1 trillion USD market cap. company i referring to is Amazon.

entire amazon campus basically 1 h1b visa holder after another. everyone of them i worked with say they only dealing with abuse because need to leave country if they quit and they scare of get PIP ..amazon process led by manager and hr to fire employee

birdymcbird··on U.S. inflation stays high as housing costs bite
“Inflation in the US has cooled for a seventh month in a row, but prices continue to rise far more quickly than is considered healthy.”

How should one interpret this? The overall inflation rate is going down, but inflation is still too high?

I am a layman. What is the solution? More rate hikes? If borrowing costs are already so high (to buy a house for instance), then why isn’t inflation coming down even more and faster? Does it mean buyers still have too much cash or are too willing to borrow or risk even with high rates?

birdymcbird··on Mercedes-Benz previews its operating system MB.OS
all sounds good…to be honest read some paragraphs but not whole page.

step 1 for Mercedes Benz is to make a vehicle reliable especially at their asking price.

had a mb c300. lots of oil leak after warranty period. sensors also bad, constantly complain about low coolant level, even when it good. transmission also slipping.

purchase car brand new. never abused engine..always put high octane gas..did all routine maintenance from mb dealer.

Will NEVER buy mb product. when i read about new software to me they just bunch of fancy talking clowns. have a 2012 hyundai elantra now driven by me daughter.

more reliable than mb c300. even hyundai more reliable than mercedes benz.

birdymcbird··on AWS Publishes Reference Architecture, Implementations for Deployment Pipelines
thats true. even if not amazon scale.. lets say you building multi tenant SaaS product. cell-architecture provide strong tenant isolation avoid noisy neighbor problem. other benefits like deploy changes to one cell so tenant may request delaying upgrade if they need to do pre-req work before hand.

for ordinary service use case or web site.. most probability do not need this. over engineering infrastructure when should focus on customer and problem domain..thing that increase top or bottom line.

source: principal SDE who launched several services at amazon using cell architecture.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Why is anybody still working for Twitter?
Don’t see this on twitters iphone app at all.

if this really happening then musk right to fire engineers.

from me time at google and amazon - most critical services operate independently..not requiring entire teams to operate. just need 1-2 engineer on call.

for most part of traffic spike then auto scaling solution in place to add compute capacity.

service never should be brittle.

Twitter case very interesting. practically no major feature work in 5 year.

me best guess Twitter may have issue now because they pushing feature under musk. as he said himself expect issues to happen.

but all these people crying Twitter demise are like clowns. musk ripped band aid off the massive grift..people paid $350k+ a year to not do much productive work.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you got on any aspect of life?
question everything.

do not take internet and media at face value. many lies. half truths or zero truths.

in country where living now, me former political preference. always viewed its politicians favorably. saw problem to be “other” side.

sometime later realized the media i listen to not much different than “other” side. me favored politicians not much better than other side. they all crooks.

intention not to tune out and ignore responsibility to vote in democracy but stop political divide.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: How to keep an online community from downgrading to Reddit like quality
HN definitely step above reddit.

reddit mess of angry people and rage bait articles. every other post on /r/popular is hate towards non-progressive/us conservative or something about lgbt/trans or black americans.

agree people marginalized and society should fix. but they view only they exact position is acceptable and nothing else to be tolerated. No nuance discussion. honestly every other post someone complaining about something.

reddit like dirty water pond on internet.

personally think HN overall good productive discussion on many topic. do not see it shifting into reddit.

birdymcbird··on Sanders calls for minimum salary of $60000 for public school teachers
not sure this really fix any problem. $60k good salary in arkansas maybe. if you in expensive city..not go very far.

have kids in public america school system. government spending money in my opinion uncompetitive and wasteful. but public education must all support. it still good in america.

national minimum salary ok but need states or cities to tune to living cost. $60k only work maybe in central us.. cheaper state or city.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Why is anybody still working for Twitter?
>> Or was there really tons of dead weight at Twitter?

elon fired > half the company. site runs reasonably well. personally havent seen issues.

main question is what these people did.

and being in big tech seen this up close. original leadership leave, replace by professional managers. Professional manager have no vision or care about product. only goal to grow head count..get promoted.

amazes me why so many people triggered by musk firing half company. class of worker producing no economic value but paid hundreds of thousands USD per year..catered food.. it massive GRIFT. business is business, not charity.

birdymcbird··on Tell HN: Salesforce is mandating RTO 3 days/wk for all employee
personally dont disagree.

at big tech productivity fell off cliff with remote work. lot of “fake” growth and fake “success” because of fed zero rate policy. but party over.

especially entitled people earning $200k++ year have little room to complain about first world problem.

only “innovation” especially at big company like this is more and more professional manager get hired..dont know the tech..do not understand product or they customer..just hire more and more in empire building exercise.

time to work hard or find new job.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Using Java for a web application in 2023
>>> 1. Nobody is forcing you to use Java

Never said this. Said no one forced you to use lombok or what library you complaining about. not only do you make false statement but you dishonest in debate.

>>> 2. Appealing to authority as justification for Java use.

you use google as example of company not believing in java, that amazon encouraging not using Java (which not true)… you opening statements in you angry rant all about appealing to authority. now you projecting.

it pointless discussion because you make angry rant on java..appeal to authority..and most importantly..you make claim about use of java mean one not know computer science.

you yourself not understand computer science. it have nothing to do with any language choice.

entire premise of you argument completely flawed and embarrassingly wrong. poor essay attempt. maybe you were amazon SDE 1 at best.

birdymcbird··on US aircraft shoots down new airborne object over Canada
if this alien then bigger danger for human.

civilization that travel how many light year to get here possess technology human identify to be magic or God.

terrifying to think at least to me :)

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Using Java for a web application in 2023
>>> Worked, and Yes. But thats due to legacy more than anything else, and because the builder tools team built a pretty sizeable ecosystem around dependencies/builds with Java, with a lot of templates out of the box.

amazon move fast in this space. if something have expensive or hurt innovation they move quickly off. sometimes company wide campaign to block "X" going to production. tell an amazon principal or sr. principal they only have java for legacy reason and they will ask you what company you work at.

>>> - Most performance heavy applications are written heavily with NDK. Google provided this specifically because the jvm layer doesn't suit things like games very well.

nobody here talk about writing super performance optimized thing. we not talking about games. dont know anyone using java for games and you writing strawman argument.

>>> BTW there was guidance at Amazon to use Kotlin over Java going forward because it results in a better maintainable codebase.

this not true. maybe you team has its own preference for kotlin. no company wide guidance on this. how i know? you not only person worked at amazon.

> Google is heavily investing into Fuschia, with Flutter/Dart, as the next gen mobile/home device OS. In general a lot of web app application style apps are written with React Native, which is structured very similarly to Flutter/Dart (as the code can be compiled to a JS web app as well)

yeah even amazon using react native for some apps. what this have to do with java? and what specifically it have to do with your assertion about using java mean not knowing computer science?

>>> Meanwhile, your favorite Java now has Spring4Shell circulating around, and I hopefully don't have to explain how in the case of Log4j, a developer willingly writing the network request/execute code as part of logging something is much, much worse than finding some bug that can make a program crash in very specific conditions.

bugs happen in any software. make no sense how this is indictment of java as language. you picking logging issues. even go has many logging frameworks. c++ std lib not include logging as first class afaik. again this argument have no merit.

>>> So you have things like big dependency injection frameworks that eat startup time, or things like Lombok that essentially hack the AST. There is no central authority controlling what Java is, so you get these Log4Shell, Spring4Shell and others.

nobody force you use big dependency injection framework or use Lombok. it your choice.

>>> At Amazon, every time you wanted to either run unit tests or start up the service, it took at least 10 seconds for everything to run before your code gets executed.

amazon has own flavor of build system. Brazil and it many variations for different languages very old..slow..some combination of both. if you work at amazon you should know about amazon tax.

>>> The only thing strong typing does is that it makes it harder for, lets say "entry level" devs to shoot themselves in the foot, since they are essentially using an API.

are you complaining on java or strong typing?

>>> The only thing strong typing does is that it makes it harder for, lets say "entry level" devs to shoot themselves in the foot, since they are essentially using an API

^ This comment make no sense. strong typing is like using an api? LOL

>>> But Java does provide ways to shoot yourself in the foot, which is why code reviews are a thing.

So move off java and we can stop doing code reviews?

>>> So in the end, if you didn't realize all of this, then you don't fully understand computer science.

language choice has nothing to do with knowing or not knowing computer science. this is one of most absurd comment seen. LOL :)

computer science not focus on any particular language. cs program may have course on programming languages..cover history of languages.. regular grammars.. what it means have abstractions. concepts critical to design of a language. it care nothing at all if you have fetish for python or go or angry tears about some java logging framework.

>>> If you do realize this, and still think Java is ok to use today, then you either are delusional, or are privy to some great wisdom that nobody else knows.

if java not okay to use then amazon distinguished engineer, sr. principal, and principal community would deprecate or ban language entirely. you wrote lengthy post. maybe you found yourself clever asserting point about java being slow for games. can assure you if you write this as amazon doc.. senior leaders not take you seriously.

calling people "delusional" for not agreeing with your opinion strong indication you presenting weak argument. and thats me very generous. this more like infantile "hissy fit" behavior. you confuse HN with reddit maybe.

you never answered question how language choice related to knowing or not knowing computer science.

birdymcbird··on Apple avoids job cuts because it didn’t overhire like Google and Amazon
was at amazon at peak covid.

distribution/warehouse problem and over hiring problem are two separate problems.

i will explain overhiring problem.

from 2018 to 2021 many amazon executives and director leave company. this continued in 2022.

these “tech” leadership very hands on..strong technical acumen. they have vision..manage people..understand business..understand the tech and how to scale.

these people not perfect. under them it very hard burnout factory of place to work. good chance if you work here you need therapy.

these people all start leaving.

they replace by “professional” managers. professional manager has one goal: grow headcount and build empire so they get promoted.

entire teams exist with no valuable output. team of 8 people supporting a service built 10 years ago maybe doing patching like replace outdated java log4j library and redeploy. no feature work. entire team can be fired and service ownership could be given easily to some team doing feature work in another space.

this problem happening all over amazon. innovation at amazon is on how to increase revenue. what they do is hire mba grad, put pressure on them to deliver. Mba grad does obvious shitty thing… let show more ads. if you see amazon.com and search it is now flea market but before you buy any cheap trash first you see walls and walls of “sponsored” recommendation or what is actually fucking ad.

it a massive grift.

amazon need Bezos to return like bob iger do at Disney. jassy only focus on aws

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Has Apple abandoned Objective-C?
wrote objective c lot in early 2010s. loved the language.

from just reading articles and code sample, swift much faster and easier to write. i would still like to write objective c but feel swift easier to teach to new programmer.

if goal to have anyone become programmer and anyone can write iOS app submit to apple store then swift less intimidating than objective c. feel like right choice.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Using Java for a web application in 2023
you said you work amazon. isnt majority amazon running jvm using java?

using random lib sound poor or inexperienced developer problem not java problem. same issue can happen in other language.

but this all beside point.

let say java terrible choice.

tell us more about how using java mean we dont know computer science. still want to understand how language choice a “computer science” problem. teach us.

birdymcbird··on Ask HN: Are Scrum-Masters Useful / Worth a Full-Time Salary?
no. team members can take turns being scrum master if they want scrum.

these are fake jobs.

became prevalent with zero interest rate and cheap lending..especially at small companies when they have massive evaluations stamped on by investor class.

with high and rising rates expect to see this kind roles evaporate. mostly a grift
