binomial··on Products For People Who Make Products For People
Well, there's also the fact that some "UX" guys don't have any great ability in graphic design, but are great when designing the use and flow of an interface. It's not necessary that an ability in the latter implies similar ability in the former.
binomial··on Bouncing Beholder: JS1k winner explained
I can't help but say that I think that there were more deserving demos, in terms of how impressive/fun they were compared to the winner, though I'm glad to see the chess one up there. Not to knock the winner though, it's also a good demo and probably won because of better cross-browser compatibility or something.
binomial··on Ron Conway Drops A Nuclear Bomb On The Super Angels
That was a mistake, meant to be a direct (private) message to someone on twitter, probably a fellow "super angel".
binomial··on Tell HN: I got sick of people procrastinating. Now I tell them to Finish Shit.
This is a great idea, and I've been thinking of something similar. Some people, including me, work better when there's someone waiting for the work with some deadline. This works out badly if you're working on your own thing, but people like this can be very productive under a good "boss".

So my idea was a web app where people could sign up to be "bosses", and you'd have some karma system to figure out who the good bosses are, matching them up to the "employees" who sign up to get bossed around to do the tasks they've set for themselves. Now, you'd have to put in measures to make sure bosses don't get abusive (make it part of the karma system I guess), ways to match up people with their boss, etc. But it seems like a neat idea that might just work. I just don't know if you could find enough people who like being a good boss (or at least like getting the karma points associated with good bossing), as well as enough people who'd sign up to be bossed around.

binomial··on Native ZFS for Linux
Very nice, thanks for both.
binomial··on Native ZFS for Linux
What I'd love is for the L2ARC system built on top of ZFS to be ported as well. That's a killer feature for web applications. Basically, it can extend your cache to include an SSD, but manage that all internally, so you just use your database as usual on top of ZFS and let it handle all the caching and moving less used data from SSD to disk and vice versa, and of course the usual filesystem caching in RAM as well.

Though you could get similar functionality by using membase at the expense of being limited to get/set operations (it's a K/V store).

binomial··on Ask HN: How do you find time to code/build your business in the evening?
Unrelated, but: is <g> some sort of emoticon? Or what?
binomial··on LaTeX CV Template
Well, it's compiled using XeLaTeX, which really is necessary for the template. It also requires a bunch of LaTeX packages I had to track down through Google I think, so you'd have to do the same. Also you should get the Fontin font, or another professional font (Fontin is free though). Here's the tex file used to render my PDF resume: http://pastie.org/1173737
binomial··on VideoJS (Zencoder, YC W10) re-launches with new site, new features, still free.
So say you want a single video on your the home page of your website to demo your application. What would be the advantage of using this over just embedding a Vimeo video or something?
binomial··on LaTeX CV Template
I forgot whose online LaTeX CV template I used to create my own resume, but it was very nice and helpful for a TeX noob like myself, better looking than this one. This is what mine looks like, with very minimal changes in layout/design compared the original: http://www.scribd.com/doc/37894947/Resume-of-Muhammed-Hoque
binomial··on Cuil Goes Down for Good
According to Gabriel, he filters out spam aggressively. So the answer is probably "yes".
binomial··on How To Go From Idea To Launching With Paying Customers In 8 Steps
I agree, there aren't enough people on techstartu.ps, but there were even fewer earlier and it seems to be picking up. I'd guess that this one is here to stay, especially since it's run by DuckDuckGo founder Gabriel Weinberg.
binomial··on Bill Gates, Hero
It is not unlikely that many of those would end up as failed endeavors whether or not MS existed. We can only speculate though.
binomial··on Introducing The Amazon Linux AMI
However, the fact that it's based on Centos 5 doesn't seem great too me. Granted, I've only started using Centos recently, but it seems like most packages are not kept up to date in the default repositories, and you end up having to add a few independently maintained ones to get some more recent software.

But yeah, can always just install from source I suppose. Perhaps I'm "Doing It Wrong" on Centos.

binomial··on Linus Torvalds became US citizen
Perhaps Poe's Law applies here?: http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Poes_Law
binomial··on Hacker News Instant Search
The YouTube Instant implementation did have predictions, though I believe it was just a hack using Google's own API.
binomial··on Structure Synth, an IDE for creating recursive 3D art
Well, all you really need to know is how coordinates work, and how rotation about the x, y and z axes work, which corresponds to the rx, ry and rz parameters. You also need to be able to follow the control flow of the rules, which can sometimes be tough if you make them deeply recursive, referencing each other everywhere.
binomial··on HDR video accomplished using dual 5D Mark IIs
I'm amazed at how much it looks like modern video game graphics, particularly the video of the man. If there was a way to go from the HDR to a "normal" image, perhaps that would let video games look slightly more realistic too.
binomial··on 3 reasons to use MongoDB
i.e. do it like you would in a relational database.
binomial··on Ask HN: What habits made you a better programmer?
I have a lot of "darkness" around me concerning threading, but isn't it a net win even with the GIL if the threads are mostly waiting for IO to finish?
binomial··on Announcing Micro Instances for Amazon EC2
Except that you have to pay separately for storage, as you have to use EBS: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#instance
binomial··on DHH Commissions his own Supercar - the Pagani Zonda HH
I assume he meant for a startup :)
binomial··on Using hyphenation and justification on the web
TeX justification really needs to be ported to browsers. Are those hyphenation algorithms really that hard to implement?
binomial··on What is the Speed of Gravity?
I'm by no means well-versed in the special theory of relativity, but I believe one of its results is that light seems to travel the same speed at you no matter what your own speed may be (since it's all relative anyways, there's no absolute frame of reference for you to really measure your own speed), as a consequence of the Lorentz transformations.

I think this was confirmed in an experiment where scientists measure the speed of light from the sun both during sunrise and sunset, since the relative speed between the sun and the measurement devices are different due to earth's rotation (sorry, don't have a link handy for all this, I probably got some details wrong but you get the idea).

I guess the theory of general relativity would extend this to gravity.

binomial··on Once a Dynamo, the Tech Sector Is Slow to Hire
Heck, finding any engineering job now as a graduate with no experience is very difficult. I would know, having just graduated as a mechanical engineer.
binomial··on Meta HN: Why is this account banned? (access_denied)
Nope, I'm not access_denied. As you can see, access_denied has been making comments even after I had created my account.
binomial··on Meta HN: Why is this account banned? (access_denied)
I do have it on, that's how I found access_denied. Otherwise, I would have never seen him/her.

Once I saw a perfectly reasonable comment dead, I digged into the comments and submissions, to the point where the ban occurred. I saw nothing notable whatsoever, access_denied's comments all seem fine to me. And yet he's been unheard an unreplied to for quite a long time. It's not a crime against humanity, but it isn't quite right.

binomial··on Ask HN: What's up with this accusation of HN censorship? (blog.nodejitsu.com)
They all got perma-banned I believe, hence the popup.
binomial··on How do I write so much, you ask? Well, glad you asked
I believe that was a quote, in case you missed it. See the bottom of the GP's post.
binomial··on Ask HN: How to avoid double-post in HN?
It may split the discussion, but also creates new discussion. What we need is a way to repost links for those who haven't seen them before (potentially many people), while maintaining the old discussion and adding on to it.
