billy99k··on X said it would give $1M to a user who had previously shared racist posts
I find that people in the HN community either can't detect sarcasm (on the spectrum) or are intentionally being dishonest. Not camp you fall in, tbh.
billy99k··on Canadian Province New Brunswick to Quit Using Elon Musk's X
They say Twitter has 'harmful content' and then move to Bluesky????

Bluesky has some of the worst images and content I've ever seen on the Internet. People regularly talk about murdering government officials and threatening people, without getting banned.

It has nothing to do with the content they feel is 'offensive and harmful'.

*Update: I'm getting auto-downvoted by bots. Good thing I'm good at botting too :-))))))))))))))))

Farewell,

I will rule from the shadows once again.

billy99k··on Microsoft account bugs locked me out of Notepad – Are thin clients ruining PCs?
I could also say the Linux desktop creators are the problem as well. It's so buggy, it makes it impossible for me to switch.
billy99k··on US Government to fund Maga-aligned think-tanks and charities in Europe
How is this any diffent than when Democrats put finding into liberal NGOs and charities?
billy99k··on India's female workers watching hours of abusive content to train AI
"We can help tackle global income disparity "

As long as it doesn't involve just giving them money. This experiment has been done in Africa for as long as I can remember and there's only more poverty and a higher birth rate.

"without telling poorer people that they should be happy we're offering them the jobs we don't want to do ourselves"

A corrupt government is usually the reason a country doesn't prosper. There's no jobs because businesses end up just getting ripped off and move elsewhere (along with anyone smart). What's left is a broken infrastructure and abject poverty.

Until this is fixed, things will never change.

billy99k··on India's female workers watching hours of abusive content to train AI
"The wealth available in the world right now is completely unfathomable, and its mostly going to ads, privacy invasion, burning massive amounts of energy to make fake videos and articles and more adware, etc. Its not wrong to think "is something wrong with having droves of poor people wading through our shit so they don't starve?""

Why is the sole blame on countries other than India. We should be focusing on the government of India and why the system there creates a society with a much larger percentage of poverty than many other parts of the world.

"Similar to how the coal mining companies were happy to watch miners die in the mines from blacklung, and their services were indeed useful, and they were quite proud of it."

How is this similar? Nobody is dying from looking at terrible content.

"why aren't they using a clearly better alternative for those people?"

This article is about the better alternative. They aren't physically risking their lives every day to make a living.

billy99k··on Twitter is not real life
"If you’re largely getting your news from Twitter, you might not even know that Trump is unpopular, because you wouldn’t even see a lot of the backlash."

You can't go anywhere without seeing someone say something bad about Trump. However, all other platforms are heavily biased toward the Left, which isn't real life either.

Even posting a hint of right-leaning ideas on Blue sky or most subreddits and you're account is instantly banned. When these bans don't happen on platforms like Twitter, the percentage of right-wing content is higher.

This tells you more about the current state of social media platforms (the Left supports banning and censorship). Sites like CNN removed their comment sections, but most left-leaning websites heavily censor them as well.

Left-wing popularity can't survive without censorship.

billy99k··on Jeffrey Epstein Helped His Publicist Become a Big-Time Venture Capitalist
This is turning into the hunt for Nazis...where they convicted a 90 year old typist that didn't reject the regime at 13 years old.
billy99k··on 58% of Photographers Have Lost Work to Generative AI: Survey
On Facebook, I've seen some artists/graphic designers railing against AI. Companies don't care if you created it or if they can use AI for 90% less money and time an create something that works.

When software piracy destroyed my brother's small software company a decade ago, and music piracy forced all of my indy music friends out of the business, nobody cared.

Do you care now? When you are forced out of your profession and can't make a living?

In a way, I'm happy. I can now give you reasons why you should be sharing your hard-work (for free) with the world through AI training data and give you a horse-and-buggy analogy.

billy99k··on Skipped high school, now signs off on 16,000 layoffs at Amazon
This actually isn't that bad when you consider Amazon added 400,000 employees in 10 months.
billy99k··on Unable to Stop Al, SAG-AFTRA Mulls a Studio Tax on Digital Performers
Boo hoo. Maybe all of the piracy advocates should be forced to pay a tax too.

Funny how when the roles are reversed, copyright infringement becomes a threat that needs to be taxed, instead of 'freedom'.

billy99k··on Founder of 4chan created /pol/ days after meeting Jeffrey Epstein
A bit of a reach. Epstein knew everyone with money.

Why nothing about Bill Gates? He tried to dose his now ex-wife and clearly was involved with underage girls.

billy99k··on Ask HN: How are you preventing AI-driven "brain-softening"?
The answer isn't to force yourself to do something an LLM can do. It's to let the LLM do some of the work and you focus on things that it can't.
billy99k··on Trump officials met group pushing Alberta independence from Canada
"The Trump administration has held covert meetings with fringe separatists from Canada’s oil-rich province of Alberta as a rift deepens between Washington and Ottawa."

Not very 'covert', now is it. The President mostly meets with people all day every day as part of their job.

They also meet with evil dictators that support the murder of their own people. This shouldn't be news or shocking to anyone.

billy99k··on FBI searches Atlanta election office, chasing Trump 2020 vote fraud claims
All of the proof is most likely gone. Most judges threw out any of the court cases and election offices stalled the investigations.
billy99k··on The tech market is fundamentally fucked up and AI is just a scapegoat
"Consulting/contractor becomes default - Full-time employment becomes rare; most devs work project-to-project like other creative industries"

I'm in the tech industry and have been doing this for 12+ years now. In the beginning, it was because I wanted to live overseas for a few years, without a break in my career.

Now, it's about survival. I buy my own health insurance (me and my family) in the marketplace every year (so I'm not tied to an employer), work with multiple clients (I never really have to worry about getting laid off), and make much more than a FTE.

While all my friends in tech are getting laid off or constantly in fear of getting laid off, I don't have to worry.

I also find that because I touch so many different technologies, I have to turn down work. I turned down a company last year, that wanted me in-house and one this year that would have been too demanding on my schedule.

It's also flexible and always remote.

billy99k··on AI code and software craft
The same could be said about the mass adoption of open source.

Why hire an experienced coder to create project X, when you can just use an open source project and hire cheaper and less experienced coders to make updates? I've been part of many of these conversations with business leaders and management over the years.

Developers have been giving away their work and devaluing their profession for decades and has basically turned it into digital factory work.

It's why I stopped writing software professionally almost a decade ago.

AI is using all of this open source to train and will eventually put you out of a job.

billy99k··on When employees feel slighted, they work less
"The lost productivity was a form of revenge, with slighted employees taking more paid sick time, arriving late, leaving early, and taking longer breaks."

Someone will feel slighted no matter how well you treat them. I blame all of the 'micro-aggression' nonsense we've seen in the last couple of years and subreddits like /r/antiwork. This sounds like just the kind of thing that's encouraged there.

"The study found that when managers at a national retail chain failed to deliver birthday greetings on time, it resulted in a 50% increase in absenteeism and a reduction of more than two working hours per month. "

Most people I know don't care about their birthday (or being recognized) to this extent. Years ago, I worked at a place that decided to celebrate everyone's birthday that week with a cake and a 10/15 minute meeting (usually multiple birthdays were celebrated at the same time). As the company grew, we were having these meetings 3-times per week.

My 6 year old would care if their birthday didn't get recognized and similarly pout all day and seek this type of 'revenge'.

I wouldn't want to work with anyone that did this.

billy99k··on AI Agents Simulate Prepping for Trump's Third Term
You mean when Bush had a 3rd term? These lies circulate whenever there is a Republican in office.
billy99k··on Tech Workers Are Condemning ICE Even as Their CEOs Stay Quiet
"But after an ICE agent shot and killed an unarmed US citizen, Renee Nicole Good"

She was antagonizing the agents all day and almost ran one over. The picture this is trying to paint is that she was completely innocent and was shot for no reason.

The only reason ICE had to get this involved in the first place is because cities decided to stop cooperating with them and allowing illegal immigrants to stay.

billy99k··on AI future will be nothing like present
The same thing happened when higher level languages were introduced and developers didn't need to use assembly.

I also saw it happen with JS frameworks/front-end development.

By avoiding AI you might be out of a job one day without the ability to get another one, because employers will all reqire it.

billy99k··on cURL removes bug bounties
I've been active in the bug bounty community for almost 7 years now. The problem is that the majority of companies don't act in good faith.

Even when you have something fully exploitable and valid, they will many times find some way to not pay you or lower the severity to pay you very little.

The catch-all excuse is something along the lines: "although this is vulnerable, it doesn't impact the business".

I've gotten this excuse, even when I could prove it was a production server with customer information that I could access.

Sites like Hackerone can help, but in the end, it comes down to the company running the bug bounty program.

billy99k··on Show HN: I was burnt out and failing so I built AI that give shit about me
You need help.
billy99k··on /R/selfhosted limits vibecoded apps
It will explain to me your thought process and why you might think completely controlling a community, down to the type of personal projects posted, isn't considered fascist. Especially when the community wasn't asked.
billy99k··on /R/selfhosted limits vibecoded apps
If you can explain why someone might think Trump is fascist.
billy99k··on Show HN: Opal Editor, free Obsidian alternative for markdown and site publishing
It's going to be tough competing with a battle tested app, including a large ecosystem of plugins.
billy99k··on cURL stopped HackerOne bug bounty program due to excessive slop reports
That's why I said 'supposed to'. It's obviously not working.

"That doesn’t apply to cURL at all"

I never said it did. My point is that companies are struggling with slop reports as much as researchers not getting paid.

billy99k··on cURL stopped HackerOne bug bounty program due to excessive slop reports
Slop bug bounty reports have always been an issue. Sites like HackerOne have a triage team that's supposed to filter through the garbage, before it gets to program management.

On the other side of it, I've submitted reports that are valid, have the steps, and show impact. Companies will do everything in their power to not pay you, including changing the back-end code or just stating it doesn't have any impact on business.

billy99k··on Ask HN: Can I still code by hand?
"I was happier when I could just write it myself without thinking about token subscriptions. I liked writing code."

We may eventually see all dev work shifted in this way. It will become a different job altogether.

billy99k··on ChatGPT to start showing ads in the US
Eventually, it will be paid placement in responses. A modern Google search.
