Reminds me of XSLT.
billrobertson42··on Q: Why Is the Facebook App So Large? A: iOS Can’t Handle Facebook Scale
Stay classy.
billrobertson42··on How I Failed, Failed, and Finally Succeeded at Learning How to Code
Not having success at the beginning isn't failing. It's learning.
billrobertson42··on Stop the Vertical Tab Madness (2010)
Ascii came around in 1963, so possibly csv predates ascii?
billrobertson42··on Atom 1.0
I had found that Sublime did pretty terribly with large files (not source), so I was back in in Emacs.
billrobertson42··on KeePass – questionable security
jaxy?
billrobertson42··on Java: Real or Not?
It's utter bullshit to conflate Spring and Java like this.
billrobertson42··on Fast Exact Search in Hamming Space with Multi-Index Hashing (2012)
Thanks for the info. I've been digging around the opencv docs a bit after some googlefu. Interesting to see other potential uses though.
billrobertson42··on Fast Exact Search in Hamming Space with Multi-Index Hashing (2012)
Out of curiosity, what sort of problem would you apply this to?
billrobertson42··on Paul Hudak, co-creator of Haskell, has died
I read his paper, "Conception, Evolution, and Application of Functional Programming Languages," and used it for work on a project while getting my master's degree.

If you're interested in functional programming, I highly recommend it. It explains many of the things that you've heard about FP, and it very well written.

billrobertson42··on Microsoft Launches Visual Studio Code, a Free Cross-Platform Code Editor
Seriously? A 100MB C++ file?
billrobertson42··on Microsoft Launches Visual Studio Code, a Free Cross-Platform Code Editor
Swing was crap at the time, but it got significantly better.
billrobertson42··on Ask HN: Should I use K&R to learn C?
Yes and no. Perhaps when the first edition was published that was true, but the second edition was published 11 years later.
billrobertson42··on Ask HN: Should I use K&R to learn C?
I will second Expert C Programming.
billrobertson42··on Motion sensing using the doppler effect
One of the first things I checked was the hearing range article on Wikipedia. Seems like cats would be able to hear the tone too.

billrobertson42··on What happened to all the non-programmers?
A person who looks around at the people he's socializing with, then apparently immediately grabs a computer, downloads a statistical data set and begins to analyze it in R wonders why he's surrounded by other programmers?
billrobertson42··on SmileMiner – A Java library of state-of-art machine learning algorithms
I agree with fiatmoney, and would also like to add that if you implement it in simple Java w/few dependencies, it makes it easier to use the library in many contexts. e.g. other JVM languages.
billrobertson42··on Bitcore – A pure JavaScript Bitcoin API
Coinbase has easy integration of that does it not?
billrobertson42··on Show HN: NomadList – The best cities to live and work remotely in
Some of the text is so low-contrast that I can't read it.
billrobertson42··on Simpsons in CSS
One might assume that audio/video is ripped from the original, and is therefore copyrighted by Fox.

I don't think that putting up your own rendering of a character is quite the same thing.

billrobertson42··on Ask HN: scan Macbook / OS X machine for malware
> I recently got a couple of times a warning from Google while using the web from home saying that there was "Unusual traffic from your computer network"

How/when is warning being communicated to you?

billrobertson42··on The next version of DuckDuckGo
I have a huge issue with low contrast text due to my eyes. Many sites I will simply not spend time on.
billrobertson42··on Betty – English-like interface for the command line
COBOL was supposed to be English-like too wasn't it?
billrobertson42··on Microsoft releases QuickVB
For the children out there.

QuickC was their branding for a 'lite' implementation of Microsoft C in the late 80's. It was cheaper than Microsoft C. Visual C++ did not exist yet. Hell, C++ barely existed at the time. IIRC, it was intended to be a competitor to TurboC from Borland.

The compiler was a bit too quick. i.e. it was pretty buggy. I started with it, and quickly moved on to TurboC. Working with a compiler that could correctly compile a for loop made learning the language a lot easier.

They re-branded GWBasic (bundled with DOS) into QuickBasic. There was also a QuickPascal. IIRC, neither QuickPascal nor QuickC lived very long.

billrobertson42··on Ask HN: 6 months later, DigitalOcean still Sucks... Why do you use them?
Do they do something that precludes you from overwriting the boot sector of the VM to install a custom OS?
billrobertson42··on Soylent gets tested, scores a wholesome nutritional label
There are a lot of mystery carbs in there. 84g carbs, 8g in fiber and 2g in sugar. The remaining 74g?
billrobertson42··on Supporting customers gives CEOs a reality check
Not if you employ the law of two feet.
billrobertson42··on Decompiling Clojure I
Try running your repl with the -verbose:class flag, and you'll see it in action.
billrobertson42··on Rendering Head in WebGL
Is the source of limitation browser implementation of OpenGL? Or is it a combo of the browser + OS? Or Browser + OS + graphics drivers?
