billbrown··on Online trading platforms down for users
e*trade is not, thankfully.
billbrown··on Microjs
I remember getting a drag-and-drop, sortable interface for a blog-widget configurator in Go Daddy's Quick Blog app using script.aculo.us back in 2006 or 2007. Worked perfectly except in IE6 and it took three days of hard dev to get that correct.

jQuery and jQuery UI quickly overshadowed this fun little library.

billbrown··on How do you find a good manager?
I suspect that he'll dismiss all this on some irrelevant grounds but this is supremely patient and helpful. You've given him all the feedback and tools to completely change his life if he can lower the shields and soberly introspect.

Very kind. I'm sure it felt thankless but I appreciated witnessing it.

billbrown··on The Lunacy of Artemis
This is why nearly all ocean exploration is done via remotely-piloted vehicles instead of the massive yet cramped submersibles they started with. The explorers still get to do the science they love but they do it from a comfortable surface ship in shifts.
billbrown··on How to Use JSON Path
If you're on a Mac, OK JSON is a tremendous aid in working with documents and includes a decent JSONPath query dialog. (Very happy user)

billbrown··on How did Ancient Greek music sound?
There's also Michael Levy who is composing new music for ancient instruments[1] as well as playing the oldest song "Epitaph of Seikilos" on a kithara[2]

billbrown··on Calculus Made Easy
I like this view of the integral (and generally regard this site as helpful to build intuitions).

There's also the Ocean Exploration Trust, founded by Robert Ballard of Titanic discovery fame (among _many_ other things).

This guy's whole corpus reminds me of Nevil Shute's _Trustee from the Toolroom_: quiet, fastidious, and expert work appreciated worldwide.

billbrown··on An alternative cause for the Great Stagnation: the cargo cult company
I had never heard of it—unsurprisingly—but wow: "The SecDb ecosystem is composed of over 10,000 databases supporting over 2.5 billion connections, receiving 164 TB of messages, and serving around 8 PB of data."[1]

billbrown··on 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius – Stoicism in Modern Language [video]
And yet it's proven invaluable in each of those areas for the 30 years after. It's clear your knowledge of Objectivism is akin to thinking you understand Stoicism from reading the dictionary definition.
billbrown··on 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius – Stoicism in Modern Language [video]
I've read Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca and found them refreshing. They're just not as coherent as her philosophy.
billbrown··on 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius – Stoicism in Modern Language [video]
Stoicism is an excellent philosophy for the ancient world but tt's entirely insufficient for the modern era. Ayn Rand's Objectivism is Stoicism plus Aristotelianism refined and refactored. Aaron Smith elaborates well:

I suggest you check out the work of Gary Klein and the Naturalistic Decision Making community, as the Vicennes work was one of the founding projects. He features it in his 1997 book _Sources of Power_.
billbrown··on 'Energy independent' Uruguay runs on 100% renewables for four straight months
Downvoted, hah!
billbrown··on 'Energy independent' Uruguay runs on 100% renewables for four straight months
I didn't read the OP because I looked into Uruguay's previously-touted "98% renewable" last month and I doubt anything's changed.[1] I read a great study from 2022[2] and figured out the accounting trickery behind the claims.

Basically, the windmills are overbuilt past the demand, which is supplied by mostly hydroelectric and enough natgas. The wind energy is exported to neighboring Brazil and Argentina through interconnects.

You don't want to be the one not clapping, to stop clapping, or to start last. Dictators notice these things.

billbrown··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you listen to?
The best interviewer I've found is Peter Robinson for his Hoover Institution podcast "Uncommon Knowledge." He's got great guests and really elicits great answers. (He was a speechwriter for Reagan and the one that wrote his "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech.)

The best investing podcast I've found is "The Week Ahead" by Complete Intelligence. I look forward to it every weekend for its variety of guests and subjects.

Patrick O'Shaughnessy's "Invest Like the Best" podcast has a good variety of guests and he asks incisive and insightful questions.

National Review's "The McCarthy Report" has astute legal analysis from a former U.S. Attorney.

Institute for Justice's mutli-season exploration of the 14th Amendment "Bound by Oath" is well-produced, outrage-inducing, and fascinating.

"Breaking News" is a new podcast by Ben Hunt (of Epsilon Theory fame) that explores the news' nudges and narratives.

billbrown··on Networking for introverts
I found Matthew Pollard's "The Introvert's Edge to Networking" to be an outstanding resource. (Don't be fooled by the awful branding around it: I listened on Audible and never saw all the Over-the-Top marketing until just now.)

They published the postmortem, and the penetration into colleges is hinted at as being causal.

billbrown··on An open-source mouse and trackpad utility for Mac
Alfred, Karabiner-Elements (for the hyper key functionality), Shortcat, TextSniper, Moom, Sublime Text, iTerm 2, my .bash_profile.

These are all apps for which I have long-standing muscle memory. If I use a new computer, I'm still pressing the keys but nothing happens and I have to remember how to do the things the normal way.

billbrown··on So, how do you refill an aquifer?
Thanks, I always forget about SRP since I think about it at the AMA level and get my water from Phoenix.
billbrown··on So, how do you refill an aquifer?
Pricing would also make a huge difference.[1] In general, though, California is a _mess_.[2] I mean, it didn't even have state groundwater management legislation until 2014—they're seriously playing catch-up now.
