bikamonki··on Essential Phone, available now
Android w/out bloatware is not an "essential" OS. Let me own my OS and I'll think about spending $700 on hardware specs that I can get for $200 elsewhere.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Are you concerned about AI?
I am concerned. People think AI = Skynet but in reality, the next couple of decades, AI = millions of humans out of jobs. I am concerned the change will be too fast for us to adapt. Not only do we need to invent a lot of new jobs, we may need to re-learn basic paradigms like job = goal of life = success. I suppose we can imagine millions of humans that are freed from work to devote their time to hobbies, art, sports, entertainment, etc. What if that does not happen? We plug them to media and keep them calm? Bored jobless youngsters are dangerous, no?
bikamonki··on Show HN: Crackle – keyboard layout for programmers
What about @? It should have its own key already. Smart phone keyboards make it readily available in login forms for a reason.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Know of any non-digital toys/games that teach, for 6-10 year olds?
Books?
bikamonki··on 50 days of postmarketOS
I quit Windows a few years ago (I'm fine now thanks for asking!). It took me a couple of hours from what is this Linux thing to dual boot, and a few months from everything proprietary to everything open source. Freedom feels awesome.

I long for the day where I can have the same feeling on my phone.

bikamonki··on Ask HN: What is equivalent of “planned obsolescence” in internet world?
Javascript frameworks/libraries: you master one and two years later it is old news. Must master a new one or won't get jobs.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: What projects are 20 years ahead of their time?
Whatever Elon is working on...
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Passive income ideas for solo developers?
Aside from the obvious: code something that solves a real problem, you need someone to go out and sell it. Make him/her a partner/founder. That formula worked for me.
bikamonki··on How 'OK' took over the world (2011)
I've read that too. Myth busted I guess.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: What about a GitHub profile tells you a developer is quality or not?
Nothing
bikamonki··on Google Contributor: Buy an ad removal pass for the web
Isn't this how the mob works? Pay us to protect you from us.
bikamonki··on Jacque Fresco has died
Marginal unit cost of production moving closer to zero, the sharing economy, AI replacing human labor, descentralized crypto-currencies, universal minimun income, autonomous transportation, clean energy, space travel.

Fresco was right on the mark.

RIP wise man.

bikamonki··on Kill Google AMP before it kills the web
AMP was born dead no need to kill it. As the webmaster of many websites, the last time I heard customers complain about rankings in SRPs was ten years ago. Their main concern nowadays is likes, follows and shares. I keep telling them: put some effort on your website, own your audience, you do not own your FB page much less the fans and likes there. They don't listen. Trapped in the hype.

In this light, how do I sell to them the idea that investing in AMP content (same trap different server) will help with rankings/performance where they do not care?

Sadly enough, the Internet is happening inside social networks, Amazon and mobile apps. AMP is late to the party, no?

bikamonki··on Let them paste passwords
I've pasted my ultra long pwd in the username field and hit enter. It happened more than once on logins where the form is split into two steps (I am talking to you Google). Why do they split the u/p fields into two steps? Does it add security? Better UX?
bikamonki··on Lessons from last week’s cyberattack
Lesson 1: don't use Windows. Lesson 2: be it a web resource or your pc, make sure you can restore all your data/sw from clean/current copies. Lesson 3: test lesson 2 periodically.
bikamonki··on Startup Graveyard – History Shouldn't Have to Repeat Itself
By plain logic: if there isn't a formula for success, there isn't one for failure either.
bikamonki··on Solar Roof
Sit down and dig this: in my country the State owns sunshine. Yep. They even made sure it was included in the last Constitution. So, if this tech ever becomes cheap enough for the masses, government will be ready to tax it.
bikamonki··on Lovefield, a relational database for web apps, works cross-browser
Dexie.js (a wrapper for IndexDB) just stopped working on all browsers running on iOS 10.3.1 (apparently a webkit bug).

Lesson: always test cross-browser before commiting to a js library

bikamonki··on Ask HN: Do you think Electron is good for building Desktop Apps?
Go one step back: why desktop app?
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Which watch(es) are you wearing?
Top-right corner of my Android.
bikamonki··on Anbox – Android in a Box
Will I be root on the boxed droid if I am root on the Linux system or do I still need to root the android system?
bikamonki··on Ask HN: What are the OSS alternatives to iOS/Android?
I guess it depends on your cultural background. We latinos tend to be a lot more connected with family and friends. It is also the economic incentive. In a poor country, a Whatsapp over wifi call is basically free. Furthermore, a key selling point for most carriers down here is: unlimited Whatsapp and Facebook.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: What are the OSS alternatives to iOS/Android?
I've faced the same dilemma and ended up stuck in Android bc of one single app: Whatsapp. A phone is (still) mostly a communications tool and 99,99% of my contacts use Whatsapp as the primary tool to chat/call/share. So, unless I want to be an e-hermit I need a phone that runs Whatsapp.

(For a little while, there was an unofficial Whatsapp API which I used to bridge chats to my Firefox OS ZTE)

bikamonki··on Ask HN: Building a side project that makes money. Where to start?
List down 25 products/services you consume regularly. For each, ask whether a better version could be done. Yes? Do it.

Here's one case: the local/popular site to search for used cars sucks. It is slow, hard to see/compare all options, silly reloads the page on each added filter, filled with outdated listings, flooded with ads, and pic slides take forever (all of this on my slow phone over a slow 3g which is how most visitors must be using it). Furthermore, car dealers (who post most listings) complain about service and price. So I built the proverbial mvp and put it in the hands of my marketing partner (you won't sell a line of code if you do not partner with a person/company dedicated to push your stuff) who's already working on a deal with the used car dealers association, pitching a novel business plan, hopefully making some passive income for both of us.

bikamonki··on The House just voted to wipe out the FCC’s landmark Internet privacy protections
What VPN provider do you guys recommend?
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Is it possible for a non-programmer to bootstrap a SaaS business alone?
It depends entirely on the SAAS. A non-programmer friend of mine paid peanuts to an off-shore programmer to build an über simple slack-clone with Firebase + Angular + Phonegap. He has two paying customers so far. Will this scale? Probably not but if he reaches 20 customers he'll have the money for the rockstars.

This friend is a sales ninja, the tech is not an obstacle for him.

bikamonki··on “Hello, (real) world” in PHP in 2017
99% of real-world apps out there could be implemented with a BAAS and some simple JS MVC framework (good ol' BackboneJS in my flavor, if not jQuery fancy). I am not talking about building million-user-base facebooks and twitters, I am taking about a fuckzillion apps with a dozen at best concurrent users that will thrive in Firebase's free tier, a damnzillion worpress sites that never-fucking-ever get updated and would do just fine with good ol' static html, forever spared from bitcoin ramsomware.

Simply put: we forgot how to be engineers (the right solution for the problem). We are all Zuckergified into the fucking hype. Aren't we? We forgot that it is WE the experts that should tell clients how to solve their damn problems not just echo some buzz words so we get the damn contracts.

This post is NOT satire. It is the very state of current affairs.

bikamonki··on Introducing Cloud Functions for Firebase
Finally! This was the feature that made me go with parse.com when I started making backend-less apps. For Firebase apps I have to spin-up tiny node.js bots to capture events and do some cloud code magic.

Will start testing now!

bikamonki··on CSS Reminification: A crazy idea that worked
I'm sorry, I have to:

bikamonki··on If the Moon Were Only 1 Pixel – A tediously accurate map of the solar system
In this clever visualization, space is 1702774 pixels wide. At 1366 pixels width of my screen, the printed version would be 1246 screens-long, that is roughly 500 meters (0.3 miles). I am able to scroll horizontally the total screen-width in roughly 200ms, that is, my mouse can travel at 2500 m/s.
