bikamonki··on Most startup theory is ex-post, therefore bs
Yes, all future success stories will play out differently.

And no, we have identified patterns accross many past successful cases so we think we can risk theorizing some formulae and advice.

Top of my mind: - Build something really wanted/needed - The A Team - Timing - Early/easy access to funding

And whether you like it or not: luck!

bikamonki··on Show HN: 1MB – Free and easy static website hosting and database
You mean: if passed certain traffic threshold a particular site gets automatically blocked, or, you hope your users will be fair?

Let's say that given your service is free and with custom domain, a journalist uses it to publish 100k worth of revealing docs in whistlerblower.com. Then a government acts and directs a DDOs to it. What will happen to that site? To other sites?

bikamonki··on Show HN: 1MB – Free and easy static website hosting and database
What if one of your users gets lucky and traffic goes huge for one site? Everybody else gets 503's? Have you planned/designed for such scenario?
bikamonki··on I Sell Onions on the Internet
Wow! What an inspiring reading :)
bikamonki··on Phone Number Validation API
Awesome, but:

- Forever free? No limits? Sure?

- Can I plug this into a production app and make millions of API calls per day? For free? Forever?

- No support?

- How often do you update your DB? Moving numbers between carriers is common.

bikamonki··on Ask HN: How to find profitable side project idea?
Dont try to actually invent anything. Go B2B, find opportunities to automate/innovate an existing process/service, sell it as a monthly service (recurrent revenue is key), keep your costs ultra low (your time and infra). If one company buys it, two or more will.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
Everything
bikamonki··on How to Build a Low-Tech Website
So, how many requests per second can one serve with such setup, without a noticeable impact on performance?
bikamonki··on The Twenty-Five Year Journey of Magic the Gathering
Ban the card from legal play, remove it from their DB. Acknowledge the mistake.

I am aware such actions could fire in the wrong direction.

bikamonki··on The Twenty-Five Year Journey of Magic the Gathering
I am not trying to manufacture anything. There is an obvious difference between: fantasy war game and reference to reality's past events. That is why you do not see a card called Gas Chamber: Choose a creature type, destroy all creatures of the chosen type, nor one named Crucifixion: destroy target god.

As I said, in line with an article that highlights MTG's efforts to incorporate diversity into game design, Invoke Prejudice is a card that needs to be removed from the game.

bikamonki··on The Twenty-Five Year Journey of Magic the Gathering
In line with the spirit of the article, WotC needs acknowledge and amend this horrible mistake:

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiver...

"Invoke Prejudice" Whenever an opponent casts a creature spell that doesn't share a color with a creature you control, counter that spell unless that player pays X, where X is its converted mana cost.

Also note that the multiverse ID is 1488!!!

This is no coincidence, not a dumb joke. These are hate symbols that can and should be removed from the game.

bikamonki··on NYC Mesh – community-owned network to replace your current internet connection
"The network connects directly to the internet backbone, so we do not rely on an ISP."

How does it work? Can anyone connect directly to the Internet backbone?

bikamonki··on Facebook’s New Message to WhatsApp: Make Money
That is exactly what they will do. The status tab will probable show ads first, then the chats tab. Also, expect bulk messaging from business.
bikamonki··on Why I’m Using a Flip Phone
True in all accounts. I guess we need stronger discipline then :)

I am working it out with this approach: no social network apps, turned off all notifications (however the red dots over app icons bother me still), uninstalled email app (I do check it on demand using the browser email app), airplane mode at night, off the pocket most of the weekend.

My biggest concern is that using a phone killed my reading habit. I guess reading short shallow posts is the actual problem. Really pissed about it. I try to read a book and my attention span lasts for a couple of minutes. I tried kindle to keep the form factor. No luck :( I used to read a lot, a lot!

bikamonki··on The Twilio API for WhatsApp
> collect explicit opt-in

Isn't this the biggest lie in the bulk messaging industry?

bikamonki··on Why I’m Using a Flip Phone
20+ years w/out watching TV, yet there is a TV right there on the family room for the occasional movie or soccer match.

No need to ditch a very useful device, need discipline to use it wisely.

bikamonki··on You can now run Linux apps on Chrome OS
Maybe here? https://www.reddit.com/r/GalliumOS/
bikamonki··on You can now run Linux apps on Chrome OS
Or you can wipe it off, fully install Gallium OS before you finish a warm coffee and be super happy with your brand new super cheap fanless ssd linux laptop. Later, if you miss ChromeOS just click run a browser :)
bikamonki··on Pinebook: An Affordable 64-bit ARM based Open Source Notebook
For a few years now, I have been doing web/api dev on one Asus Eee Box with Intel Atom 1.8Ghz and 3GB of RAM. It does take a few extra seconds to load heavy web apps like Google Sheets or Google Maps; however, on the upside, if I make my apps run fast on such limited device, it will be super fast on most of my users' devices. I also love it b/c it makes zero noise.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: What books do you keep on your desk?
I keep one: www.google.com
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Why, you all intellectual people not quitting Facebook?
B/c breaking a habit is really, really hard. Like asking smokers why don't they quit even in light of known risks. It is not a matter of users being intelectual or not, it is a matter of rewards that reinforce the habit. Think of that silly moment when a person shares a picture of a mundane act, like a meal about to be eaten. What is the reward?

FB is an epidemic. It will go away when ppl (most likely new generations) develop resistance to it.

bikamonki··on Ask HN: What data can Whatsapp share with Facebook given encrypted chats?
Whatsapp messages are only encrypted while on the pipe. The local database on your phone isn't. I know this b/c I have r/w messages to that DB in order to make a hacky API. The app I built needed root privileges but in the newest version of Android it can be done w/out root. Can FB or Messenger apk read that DB? Yes. Can any apk installed on your phone read that DB? Yes. Can it post the data to a web service? Sure. Do they actually do it? I don't know.
bikamonki··on The Forest That Blooms Brilliantly for Just a Few Days a Year
We do not tip. By law, a 10% is added to hotel and retaurant bills, which is then split among all employees. However, tips from tourists are common so go ahead and do it if the service was worth it.

Backpackers will miss cheap food and rooms found while touring our neighbours. A booming decade has increased purchasing power for most ecuadoreans, naturally, that's made everything more expensive to buy, in particular restaurants and hotels. For instance, I just booked Airbnb in Prague for less of what I paid (per nite) for a room in Puerto López (awesome beach town) during our past holiday. A couple of weeks ago on a road trip to Riobamba I paid $10 for a fritada (a local dish made of fried pork and sides) and a glass of fruit juice. I still remember paying $3-$4 for the same meal not many years ago!

Tickets for local flights are super expensive. Booking a flight from the capital Quito to any other city will cost from $150 to $300 round trip. On the bright side, we have good roads and plenty of bus routes.

As far as places to visit, thing to do, let me put it this way: the place is so diverse and so small, that on a week-long trip you can do a lot of stuff except snow skiing.

bikamonki··on The Forest That Blooms Brilliantly for Just a Few Days a Year
AMA about Ecuador if you ever plan to come visit ;)
bikamonki··on In Switzerland, it's now illegal to boil a live lobster
Hahahaha this is too stupid. How can these be less cruel?

"Two methods are recommended: Electrocution or sedating the lobster by dipping it into salt water and then thrusting a knife into its brain."

Maybe the lobster actually feels a litle pleasure on the boiling water before going main-dish, like you reader on a jacuzzi, having an exoskeleton and all sure helps.

Stupid laws. Better fix that corrupted banking system first.

bikamonki··on Southwest Airlines is intimidating our startup
Make it an app not a website. Users can download and install it, enter flight data and click to start monitoring.
bikamonki··on Firefox Send: Private, Encrypted File Sharing
I need something like this to send myself links from my phone to my pc.
bikamonki··on Tracking friends and strangers using WhatsApp
Whatsapp's opening an API for businesses soon. More abuse on your data. Wait for it.
