I used sarcasm to make the same point: life is not a Disney movie.

Why was the bicycle, a very simple machine, invented 100 years after the steam engine, a very complex one? My theory: the idea of auto-motion had to be invented first. I imagine, the inventor of the bicycle must have observed a moving train and though: hey! like those levers, my legs could move a wheel as well. Eureka!

The blockchain is a very, very powerful idea, the application as decentralized, untraceable currency is powerful as well, even though we clearly understand the pitfalls. But the idea is already there, with real life applications, with many advantages.

For this particular case, I think we better fix/improve infosec rather than hunt down cryptos.

bikamonki··on On Ransomware and Cryptocurrency
Hahahaha exactly! We have now the need/opportunity to improve infosec.
bikamonki··on On Ransomware and Cryptocurrency
Let's ground all the planes in the world because they enable drug trafficking.

You are correct: crypto enables crime. But the solution is to fight hacking, not crypto currencies.

bikamonki··on Researchers estimate the richest 1% dodge taxes on over a fifth of their income
The taxes moral dilemma: the duty to contribute vs the duty not to finance corruption.

Context: I live in a very corrupted country.

Rich or not, what is the right thing to do?

bikamonki··on It Doesn't Work
Github and SO are the infinite source of good stuff that we devs need to solve our problems. I could not image my job w/out it. That being said, in so many years using OSS, I have never posted an issue or question. Digging around for a bit always shows the answers for "it doesn't work".

Thanks for the hard work boys and girls! You set an example of how the world should work.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thanks!

bikamonki··on Launch HN: Atrato (YC W21) – Credit Card Alternative for Latin America
I like the name! A great idea since affiliation will happen at the moment of purchase. Can it work for online stores/services? How do you manage the legality of the operation, for example, down here in Ecuador you need to be an accredited financial institution in order to write loans or receive payments.
bikamonki··on UK businesses caught buying five-star Google reviews
There is a global ethics pandemic. No?
bikamonki··on Bill Gates Says that Bitcoin is bad For the Planet
If I understand correctly, by design PoW gets harder with time, so it becomes ever more expensive to mine BTC. At some point, it should be economically unfeasible. Now, BTC is rewarded for transaction validation. Does this mean, that at some point in the future, it will be impossibly expensive to validate a new block, hence making it imposible to conduct a BTC transaction between two addresses?

bikamonki··on A 25-Year-Old Bet Comes Due: Has Tech Destroyed Society?
On the contrary, it is tech (sw, ai, bio, solar, crypto, etc) that will save society, or better said: help us move forward. Now more than ever we can witness how tech is helping us go through the pandemic. Yes, there are ugly uses of tech (I am looking at you social networks), but overall, tech is doing good to humans. A vaccine that can be tweaked in a couple of days to attack a new virus variant? Come on! That has to be proof enough that Kelly won the wager.
bikamonki··on Google Safe Browsing can kill a startup
Are there any no win, no fee law firms that specialize in these cases? What if for every hour offline, your SAAS loses X money? For this particular case, what if due to the service disruption, some customers decide to move their business elsewhere? Enforce an SLA?

Sorry, not a drop of aquafaba is left for experimentation purposes when my Mom cooks her home-famous "menestra" (red beans stew). She serves it with white rice and you eat til you lick the bowl...and then lick pot.

bikamonki··on The Lonely Work of Moderating Hacker News (2019)
I only have two doors to enter the web each day: HN and Twitter.

On Twitter, I try hard do a better job moderating content by carefully selecting who to follow; however, much noise is unavoidable. (Twitter needs to rethink itself)

On the other door, this door, I ALWAYS end up in the right spots. This is the best site on the web, no doubt. Here I discover, I learn, I get inspired. I get downvoted too :)

Thanks mods!

bikamonki··on Goodbye, Native Apps
The browser is the new OS. For most users, a Chromebook-like PC is all they'll ever need. On mobile, most native apps should be web apps or PWAs. Native code is now unnecessary in terms of hw/os features accessibility and performance.

In order to run such stacks we need to devote a couple of GB's of RAM for the OS and browser. Not a bad deal if you compare cost to benefits.

bikamonki··on Launch HN: Stacker (YC S20) – Create Apps from Airtable or Google Sheets
Say I have a Google Sheet with customer data. One column is status. When I log a new customer status is new. When I close a deal I want to change to status active, but: 1. I do not want to type "active", I want to select it from some options. 2. I want to check that customer has paid, so I need to hook this to a payments sheet or service. 3. I want to validate all input is valid before activating a customer, for example, I need a scanned image of a document to have been uploaded. 4. If all is good, I want to change the customer to active, but when I do it: 5. I want to create a log so I know when and who sold this account, so I can later automate sales commissions. 6. I want to send an email to the new customer, including login credentials. 7. Things I have not yet imagined but will surely pop when my business grows.

Can I do all this with Stacker? Merely using a couple of Google Sheets as my back-end DB?

bikamonki··on Launch HN: BaseDash (YC S20) – Edit your database with the ease of a spreadsheet
TLDR: Giving non-IT users direct edit access to the production DB will most likely break stuff.

I wrote something similar to BaseDash ages ago, I called it dAgent (for database agent). I had it running for many different clients from all sorts of trades (I do custom development). The GUI built itself from reading the DB schema.

My initial motivation was to cut dev time since dAgent would automate the coding of CRUD interfaces. However, the use of dAgent in production ended up being quite limited: maybe only used to edit catalog data (i.e. add a city to the cities table). The reason for this limited usage is no mystery: one can easily break things. In particular non-IT users can break things.

Allow me to use an example. You have a CRM with a customers table. On that table there is a field called status. For that field, dAgent would load a select input using the related table statuses, there was no risk to break integrity. However, in the business logic of this CRM, changing the status of a customer is the result of running a process. That process not only sets the status of a customer to a new value, but also writes a history log, sends email notifications and perhaps triggers an invoicing process.

Now, imagine a non-IT user changing the status field of a customer using a tool such as BaseDash. Now you have a customer in status active who is able to login to your paid SAAS but has never being invoiced.

Many such nightmares can happen when users can directly edit a DB.

For this reason, in production, dAgent features where limited to CRUDing simple catalog tables. It did help, but was not the silver bullet I had hoped for. On the other hand, IT users would never adopt dAgent since the DB engine provided a much more robust and feature-rich admin GUI. I was not in the business of competing with PHPMyAdmin, so I eventually dropped the project.

bikamonki··on For $39, Frontier Air Will Let Passengers Keep Their Distance
There is no risk avoidance in this scenario, just risk reduction. Our ability to do non-bias, rational, effective risk assessment is very poor. Hence, this and many other marketing tools work all the time.
bikamonki··on For $39, Frontier Air Will Let Passengers Keep Their Distance
What if goverments make seat skipping mandatory in theaters, planes, etc.
bikamonki··on Build a WhatsApp Chatbot with Python, Flask and Twilio
FB paid something like 20bn for Whatsapp almost 6 years ago. Something like 4bn was paid in cash. How do you make that money back if: a) users do not pay a subscription and b) ads are not printed in the app? You leverage the app's immense user base asking businesses to pay for API services so they can implement chat-bots, notifications, in-app tools, etc.

Why using res-sellers, like carriers use re-sellers to sell SMS integration? Distribution and fair-use control. First, companies like Twilio are the natural partners to sell one more channel to customers that already integrate to SMS. Second, partners will help enforce and control anti-spam efforts. If opening Whatsapp API turns it into a spam jungle like email or sms, it will certainly lose its appeal and users will start switching to the next new spam-free chat app.
