bigwheels··on I reverse-engineered Netflix's 4K restrictions
Thank you for sharing the breadcrumb~

How does Netflix detect "suspicious" activity? Does $NFLX allow 4k streaming over GrapheneOS? If so, could you pin a different certificate and do some HTTP proxy traffic manipulation to obfuscate the device (presumably an Android phone) identity or otherwise work around the DRM?

I want to understand more about this but unfortunately the reddit thread is bits and pieces scattered amongst clueless commentary, making it challenging to wade through.

Where is the $150 euros coming from? 8GB of brand new DDR3 or DDR4 is available for $20-$30 from Amazon / Fleabay, and once he sells it the laptop will no longer work.

bigwheels··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
If you access a model through an openrouter provider it might be quantized (akin to being "cut with trash"), but when you go directly to Anthropic or OpenAI you are getting access to the same APIs as everyone else. Even top-brass folks within Microsoft use Anthropic and OpenAI proper (not worth the red-tape trouble to go directly through Azure). Also, the creator and maintainer of Claude, Boris Cherny, was a bit of an oddball but one of the comparatively nicer people at Anthropic, and he indicated he primarily uses the same Anthropic APIs as everyone else (which makes sense from a product development perspective).

The underlying models are all actually really undifferentiated under the covers except for the post-training and base prompts. If you eliminate the base prompts the models behave near identically.

A conspiracy would be a helluva lot more interesting and fun, but I've spoken to these folks firsthand and it seems they already have enough challenges keeping the beast running.

Thanks! "OLT" was also new to me. In case others find it helpful:

> OLT = Optical Line Terminal.

> In ISP fiber (typically GPON/EPON) infrastructure, it’s the provider-side device at the central office/headend that terminates and controls the passive optical network: it connects upstream into the ISP’s aggregation/core network and downstream via fiber (through splitters) to many customers’ ONTs/ONUs, handling PON line control, provisioning, QoS, and traffic aggregation.

Very cool, this sounds similar in spirit to Leash (https://github.com/strongdm/leash), especially the mac-native system extension mode of Leash (although AFAIU Leash doesn't currently have full interactive-approval mode).

I took it more as a way to avoid falling into the trap that "when we have more space, problems will be solved and things will be better" (in my life experience, this was a fallacy because there was an underlying issue which needed to be addressed).

bigwheels··on SOTA on Bay Area House Party
No need to be puzzled- occasionally a funny submission will live for a bit on the front page but in general the spectrum of acceptable humor around here is very narrow.

It's sort of a case of barking up the wrong tree on that front. Personally I've been enjoying laughing at the slickdeals forums such as https://slickdeals.net/f/19069660-16-5-ft-pancellent-snake-i.... Obviously it can't compete with higher brow humor, but at least the people are nice there.

bigwheels··on Influencers and OnlyFans models are dominating U.S. O-1 visa requests
To be clear: TFA is a thinly veiled legal services advertisement ("submarine" in HN parlance), so "dominated" is being used as a hype-generation / reality distortion term.

That said, the reality of today is so-called influencers and OF sex workers are now becoming a relevant fraction of applicants compared to the past where they represented 0%. Is it possible fixating on the word "dominating" a bit overly pedantic?

There is already a lot going on here without pedantry.
