bigtones··on Larry (cat)
This just seems so quintessentially British, it made me smile. I bet Larry has seen some things in his time.
bigtones··on Tesla reports 14% decline in deliveries, marking second year-over-year drop
BYD is definitely slowing down. They are cutting prices to increase domestic demand and have cut back worker shifts at their Chinese factories from three to two per day.
bigtones··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
I'm working on a new kind of encyclopedia and reference website that is way more engaging and rich than a single page of text on every subject like Wikipedia. Back in my childhoold we had Microsoft Encarta on CDROM and it was a very compelling multimedia experience and I want to emulate something like that on the modern web by combining video, sound, images and text in a more compelling user experience with great discoverability. I've been working on the first version for about eight months and I hope to launch it next week at https://reference.org
bigtones··on Microsoft suspended the email account of an ICC prosecutor at The Hague
>> Casper Klynge, a former Danish and European Union diplomat who worked for Microsoft, said the episode was in many ways the “smoking gun that many Europeans had been looking for.”

Damn right. Strong evidence that Europe should look after their own, and not rely on the good old US of A. Written by an Australian who thinks we should do the same down here.

bigtones··on The Sky's the limit: AI automation on Mac
Sky honestly does not even look that impressive from the video on their website. So it can save calendar events if you type something into a prompt. Wow....

What am I missing ?

bigtones··on UK's Vertical VX4 eVTOL flies outside Kemble circuit for first time

bigtones··on InventWood is about to mass-produce wood that's stronger than steel
Yeah, just watched that very entertaining video and there is no resin in that bulletproof wood - it's just had all the lignin squeezed out and cooked under pressure.
bigtones··on Baby is healed with first personalized gene-editing treatment
My niece in Australia has a rare genetic disorder and when my wife and I had our first baby in California a few years ago we were concerned about that. We also had fantastic insurance and the hospital team there did a test where they took a blood sample from my wife and seperated the childs DNA from the mothers in the blood sample and tested it for several genetic disorders. That test is not available in Australia even today.
bigtones··on What is HDR, anyway?
That Kevin Chen video using Excel was amazing and hilarious. Thanks.
bigtones··on Plain Vanilla Web
Rest of World looks like a fantastic news website I was not familiar with. I just spent a half hour reading a whole bunch of interesting articles there. Well done for helping build it - its super fast from Australia.
bigtones··on Zoho halts $700M semiconductor plan
$700 million is a really cheap semiconductor plant - I wonder what node size that fab was? Maybe they got an estimate on how much a competitve semi plant really costs - and its in the tens of billions of US$.
bigtones··on Meilisearch – search engine API bringing AI-powered hybrid search
We needed a 16GB machine to import all the data into Meilisearch, as the batch indexing is quite memory intensive, but once it's all indexed we scaled it back to half that RAM and it works great - very performant.
bigtones··on Meilisearch – search engine API bringing AI-powered hybrid search
We use Meilisearch in production with a 7 million article corpus - it works really well.
bigtones··on Why Lotus Domino? (2024)

bigtones··on Crew-9 Returns to Earth
> He’s very knowledgeable about space topics, has good sources, and has been extremely fair to Musk in the past.

None of the writers of Ars Technica are anything like fair to Musk.

bigtones··on Everything Is Broken: Shipping Rust-Minidump at Mozilla (2022)
This was an engaging read and really well written considering the dryness of the subject matter. I enjoyed it.
bigtones··on Postgres Just Cracked the Top Fastest Databases for Analytics
Looks like they're currently No. 12 on their cited Clickbench benchmark - so not quite in the top 10 three weeks later.
bigtones··on Parents were injured in a Tesla crash. She ended up having to pay Tesla damages
Thanks, amended post.
bigtones··on Parents were injured in a Tesla crash. She ended up having to pay Tesla damages
Edited: Very similar to another Tesla crash in China with a social media protest. In that crash the brake lights did not come on at all. In fact the acccelerator was pressed down 100% for a full five seconds before the crash which was entirely the drivers fault.

The defendant knew this and Tesla gave the family the car telemetry data, but continued to falsely protest that the brakes were depressed during a lengthy social media campaign, and as a result determined by a Chinese court Telsa was awarded damages and the family was asked to publicly apologize.

Its the browser that does this on the client, not YouTube on the server.
bigtones··on What it's like working for American companies as an Australian
I worked for a California based American tech company while living in Perth, Australia for the last two years. All of what the OP says rings true, but I can tell that he is living on the East Coast of Australia because living in Perth we have literally no common business hours with the US West Coast which is brutal. I had to start work at midnight and work through the night for Zoom meetings and customer interactions and work on Saturday morning.

They job pays well and the people are lovely, and Australian culture has become a LOT more like the US over the past decade. Now we even have Black Friday sales but no conception that was invented because of the US Thanksgiving holiday.

bigtones··on MIT largest open-source car design dataset, incl aerodynamics, to speed design

bigtones··on Jaguar Cars rebranding without any cars
This is not going to end well. They YouTube video comments are brutal. At least they're 'copying nothing' from other car brands I guess.
