bigtoe416··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
I was recently in Malaysia on a digital nomad visa. When it expired I was required to leave the country and either wait for the renewal to go through or reenter on a tourist visa (and either not work or work illegally). So not distinctively American.
bigtoe416··on Men in their 50s may be aging faster due to toxic 'forever chemicals'
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8994130/

“In this randomized clinical trial of 285 firefighters, both blood and plasma donations resulted in significantly lower PFAS levels than observation alone. Plasma donation was the most effective intervention, reducing mean serum perfluorooctane sulfonate levels by 2.9 ng/mL compared with a 1.1-ng/mL reduction with blood donation, a significant difference; similar changes were seen with other PFASs”

bigtoe416··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
The shell company isn't a strict requirement, and I'd wager less likely. Infiltrating the delivery process would be easier and would instead require knowing about the pager purchase and being able to swap the actual package for an alternative package. Theoretically all of this is possible with some data interception to discover the pager order, a team to construct the exploding pagers, a person to deliver the exploding pagers, and a person to intercept the actual pagers (which could be the same person delivering the exploding pagers).
bigtoe416··on I mapped almost every USA traffic death in the 21st century
I used to be a volunteer firefighter and I see some of the fatalities (but not all) on this map. Looking at one of them some of the information is quite accurate (type of accident, what caused it, age of person) while other information is not at all accurate (number of people in the car, if a seatbelt was in use). It's curious how some fairly important pieces of data can be quite wrong.
bigtoe416··on Hertz Charges Tesla Model 3 Renter $277 Fee for Gas
You file a small claims case. I had a similar experience with Hertz where the math on my invoice was clearly incorrect and everybody swore up and down it was right. Tried to contest it with my credit card (who I no longer use), they didn't help out even though they had the invoice where the math was clearly wrong. Filed a small claims case in my local county court, Hertz legal called me a few days later saying they'd pay for my court costs and the full amount I contested.
bigtoe416··on Programmers should plan for lower pay (2019)
I’ve seen entry-level McDonald’s jobs paying $20, surely a programmer that can automate countless things is worth 5x that ($208k annually)
