bigs··on Ask HN: How to pitch an idea without the risk of idea theft
You may hate this but I usually put my recommendations in PowerPoint, with my name on it and the options and suggestions. I then share it and discuss it with multiple people. If he tries to claim it, well his boss already knows or other peers of his.

At the end of the day if he does take credit and no one knows… the bright side is you had a good idea, go somewhere else where they will recognise you for it.

bigs··on Tell HN: Uptimerobot.com offers a fake free plan
Sounds like it’s genuinely free…… if you’re using it for non commercial use.
bigs··on Shift Left Is the Tip of the Iceberg
Sounds like a similar/parallel thought to the project management waterfall paradigm whereby the earlier you get things correct (left) the less costly it is in the long run or conversely if you have to go and re-do things later on (right) you’re in for a shock (either cost, time or quality).
bigs··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
Google abuses privacy in every product they own via their monopoly over the ad ecosystem. Very different to Apple.
bigs··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
Google has a lot of employees and suppliers who have vested interest in their market dominance
bigs··on Why Customers Abandon Their Carts
The absolute most annoying thing a company can do, is contact me after I abandon a cart about the items in that cart. If it’s a text message you will never get a single cent from me again.
bigs··on Ask HN: Who's Most Likely to Get Laid Off During Layoffs?
This ^

And those approaching significant milestone payment obligations (e.g. long service pay)

bigs··on Ask HN: Who's Most Likely to Get Laid Off During Layoffs?
The most recent cut in my org was x% across functions. (Just one data point tho…)
bigs··on Even Microsoft Notepad is getting AI text editing now
A notes app? Clearly the words are private until I choose to share them with specific people.

So, with all the ads, AI, “telemetry” etc when does someone fork Win XP, bring it up to 2024 level security and we all move to that?
bigs··on Edge Scripting: Build and run applications at the edge
Edge just means running on servers near you (eg. the closest AWS AZ) rather than the other side of the world. It’s still servers in data centres.

Thanks - great suggestions. I have some longer term goals, provided this thing took off and had millions of users, you could do things like groupbuy expensive items (such as roasts) in advance in bulk at negotiated prices which also helps big 4’s logistics and food waste, have tiny shops add their pricing via an API so all stores are visible, and provide a free account to those on benefits who REALLY can’t afford to waste dollars

I like the scanned receipts and healthy options features you mention (I didn’t check out the site). OpenFoodFacts if you aren’t aware has a wealth of information on products such as health index, ingredients etc that you could integrate with.

I think the key is getting the user focus and showing them better options prior to purchase not once they have a receipt.

Analysing receipts is nice but a second order priority for me.

Interesting to see this comment. I’m in Australia and have had issues with the supermarkets long before the news caught wind of it this year.

I’m building something you describe, and I think there is great opportunity here, but it’s not quite ready for showing. There will be no advertising, no sell out to the Big 4 etc.

Would you be interested in being a beta user when it’s ready?

bigs··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
That looks really cool!
bigs··on In some scientific papers, words expressing uncertainty have decreased (2023)
Thanks I’m not sure what happened but it seems to be fixed…
bigs··on In some scientific papers, words expressing uncertainty have decreased (2023)
Agree. At least in my western country, it has become almost expected that everyone is fully confident all the time. I’m someone who likes to deliberate on thoughts, take my time, listen to opinions and assess them, then provide my opinion (which may also change over time with more information or changing circumstances). I am humble, a listener, and don’t believe I know everything. I feel a little out of place in current society.

Sounds interesting
bigs··on Ask HN: A philosophical issue has been bugging me. What are your thoughts?
I’m not sure this should be framed as a winner/loser argument. Everyone is different, every persons story is different.

That said, person B is likeable and I would prefer to live their life.

Person A seeks fame and glory at whatever cost, and it sounds a lot like contemporary SV startup entrepreneurs……

Imagine the finger wear and tear you’ll avoid though.

This was about 6 months ago I think. I’ll happily give it another shot.
bigs··on Ask HN: AI Assistance in Project Management
Good point - I’ll take a look at fireflies but forgot to mention copilot does a good job with taking meeting minutes, so that is another use case I’ve found helpful.
bigs··on Ask HN: What tools do you use to manage your freelance projects?
Joplin for notes self hosted, Trello (free) for kanban.

Try as I might, ChatGPT couldn’t give me working code for a simple admin dash layout in Vue with a sidebar than can minimise. I had to correct it, it would say my apologies and provide new code with a different error. About 10 times in a row it got in a loop of errors and I gave up.

Do any of these actually help coding?
