The whole point is not signing up for twitter. If signing up for twitter wasn't a problem, Nitter wouldn't exist in the first place.

The login wall provides one more avenue for profit: selling the data of logged-in users. A profile with a history of likes, read-times, etc is more valuable then a pair of eyeballs that are glazed-over and not clicking on an ad...

> ML was pretty much about classifying things into buckets.

It still is, it's just that there are a ton of buckets.

bigfishrunning··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
True, and that's a bummer, but it's the decision of the maintainers of those projects to make.

If it goes really sideways, and it may, you can either fork Linux or move away to something like one of the BSDs.

bigfishrunning··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
It's important to remember that this is a story about Ubuntu, and not Linux, and they are two very different projects with different motivations.
bigfishrunning··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
Almost zero. The party may still be, but the administration almost certainly won't.
bigfishrunning··on λ Snap – An inviting programming language for kids and adults for CS study
Programming encourages analytical thinking, and also if no-one learns to program it'll become magic, and that'll be a major societal step back.

Irish twins! congratulations :)
bigfishrunning··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
It seems like you're comparing "start from scratch in rust" to "start with an existing game engine in some other language". That's not really a fair comparison. there are popular game engines in rust (although i think they're mostly smaller/more niche then something like unity or godot), bevy comes to mind.
bigfishrunning··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
I do think rust works there (as you clearly know), i just like Go's ergonomics for that exact task better, that's all.
bigfishrunning··on Rust Is Tier-1 Language at Microsoft
Yeah, you're still stuck with DSL's there, but not for lack of trying https://github.com/NVlabs/cuda-oxide
bigfishrunning··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
Honestly, the only domains that I think rust isn't suitable for are:

* rapid-prototyping, where javascript and python are still top-tier

* adding scriptability to existing programs, where lua and scheme (and python) are popular

* Server-side API implementation (rust is usable here, but I think Go fits the slot better)

It's the only way to grow.

> For many people the phone is the only computing device they use.

I suspect the crossover area of the Venn diagram between people who spend what a foldable costs on a phone and people who have no other computing device is extremely small.

> But under the context of "government has no concept of property and assigns resources to everyone" it is not you (or any single person) that decides that,

Under every version of Communism, it's "the government" that decides that, and those government officials seem to be much better dressed then everyone else.

bigfishrunning··on DHS 'Predictive Policing' Unit Is Analyzing Americans' Financial Habits
I think you misunderstand me -- perspective matters. If you have 12 cookies, and I have 2 cookies, and i say "it would be more fair if we each had 7 cookies", then i pretty transparently just want you to give me 5 cookies.

"Clean up trash" and "Donate money to the poor" are not as unevenly beneficial. Also "Donate money to the poor" is a far cry from "Seize money and give that to the poor".

bigfishrunning··on DHS 'Predictive Policing' Unit Is Analyzing Americans' Financial Habits
Wouldn't the comrades want financial activity to be monitored, to make sure that nobody is getting more then everyone else? (unless they're a party official, of course)
bigfishrunning··on DHS 'Predictive Policing' Unit Is Analyzing Americans' Financial Habits
If "assigning resources to everyone" is a net gain (IE the voter doesn't have resources), then yes it is self serving.

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding you, but the purpose of taxes isn't to "compel people to acquire their currency", it's to remove that currency from circulation and prevent the currency they've printed from inflating itself out of existence.
bigfishrunning··on O&O ShutUp10 – The antispy tool for Windows 10 and 11
Not having a windows machine is one of the benefits of not having a windows machine! Using a console for gaming is cheaper, more secure, and more reliable then using a windows machine. The only downside is i don't have access to the wide ocean of steam and gog releases, but it's a fair trade as far as I'm concerned.

Depending on the proctor, ELIZA passes a Turing test. The Turing test is an interesting thought experiment, but isn't really a good measure.
