bigdang··on Show HN: I built a Yahoo Messenger-inspired web chat app – pure nostalgia
Not being able to move the window is a huge miss imo.
bigdang··on Don't Call It a Substack.
What is wrong with these people? Can this seriously be anything other than a mind virus?
bigdang··on Teen GTA VI hacker sentenced to life in a secure hospital
Is “secure hospital” euphemism for mental institute? I must have missed when this one was introduced.
bigdang··on Why Life Does Not Really Exist (2013)
I think this is all another way to say life is emergent. It can’t be found by zooming in, but rather only by zooming out. And of course when you zoom out you lose your ability to be very precise about definitions and constituents.
bigdang··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
Giving optimistic estimates based on generalized vehicle information, then giving more precise estimates after the 50% mark—and after having collected usage information based on the user’s actual environment—sounds to me like a decent algorithmic solution to a hard problem.
bigdang··on Signal walks the line between anarchism and pragmatism
> The company’s aggressive pursuit of growth, coupled with lack of moderation in the app, has already led Signal employees themselves to publicly question whether growth might come from abusive users, such as far-right groups using Signal to organize.

Lol what? What exactly does far-right mean in this case? Why intersperse irrelevant political digs at another ill-defined faction? Does far-right just mean non-progressive and conservative?

bigdang··on 'Incredibly noticeable': alcohol ban cut family violence, crime in Alice Springs
So what? We’ve been here before. We already know the effects alcohol has. But we also know the effects alcohol bans have.
bigdang··on Web3 Is Bullshit
This reads like a poor DHH impression.
bigdang··on Obsidian – A knowledge base from a local folder of plain text Markdown files
They lost their whole dev team? Can you share a link?
bigdang··on Tesla Safety Score Beta
Surprised no one has made the connection that this score will be used to determine the extent of FSD is available to you, which seems a great solution to the scary mass-distribution of the vehicle-as-a-weapon approach.
bigdang··on The prices hospitals negotiate with private insurers for patient services
If you do have an MRI, skip the contrast. They describe it as a harmless dye when in fact it’s a toxic heavy metal known as Gadolinium injected straight into your bloodstream, and is retained indefinitely by your body and deposited in your bones and skull: https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-d...
bigdang··on Goodbye, Fleets
One thing I never understood about Twitter, and what keeps me from tweeting, is why on earth everyone needs to see how many likes, replies, and retweets my tweet has? I will never be a Twitter influencer, and have no desire to be. I just want to tweet one-off learnings or thoughts I have without the awkward struggle of trying to compete with others.
bigdang··on San Francisco Apartment Rents Crater Up to 31%, Most in U.S.
Right? This confused me too. I thought rents increased 31% when I initially read the headline.
bigdang··on Predictions for 2020–2029
This is interesting, but is essentially taking the present and multiplying it 10x. Which is never really how the future turns out, but always how humans think the future will turn out.
bigdang··on Ask HN: Why can't I tweet?
Excellent points..
bigdang··on Ask HN: Why can't I tweet?
I'm often embarrassed by an opinion I held even 30 days ago. I just can't participate in modern "current events" or discourse because I too strongly consider both sides of an argument, whereas Twitter seems to be about blindly embracing one side and advocating for it relentlessly.
bigdang··on Ask HN: Why can't I tweet?
Building a "personal brand" helps create a following around you so that when you build something new, you have people that are interested in it. Maybe "audience" is the better word.

> then those are just casual thoughts and trivialities.

This is all of Twitter, pretty much. Most people's tweets are literally farts of the mind, yet they have no problem sharing them without the slightest feeling of self-consciousness. And it works for them, I guess. That's the whole point of Twitter.

bigdang··on Twitter's 1.5M Lines Client
This is silly. Since when is engineering competence measured by how few lines of code you write? Arguing about lines of code sounds like a topic a Hollywood TV show might broach to appease normies, when in reality the conversation is meaningless.
bigdang··on Apple App Store Principles and Practices
Right, conversations are usually triggered by back and forth reactions. Is the act of speaking propaganda? It could be, but usually it's to convey a thought you already hold.
bigdang··on Apple App Store Principles and Practices
I think it’s fine to assume they may be acting genuinely. The alternative would be to see this as propaganda, and dismiss Apple as nothing more than a bunch of suits making decisions based on short term gains over long term health and stability. Because why would any corporation, especially Apple, attempt to act rationally, right?

I have no horse in this race, but running a company, I know it’s possible to also have our truth and want to communicate it in a way that’s easy to understand. I don’t know if Apple is, but not every company has to be this demonic incarnation-of-evil we want to make them out to be.

bigdang··on ProtonMail Voluntarily Offers Assistance for Real-Time Surveillance?
While ProtonMail’s marketing has always stood out as over the top self-congratulatory, the reaction of people saying “oh no, I need to find an alternative now” represents a fairly naive understanding of the very nature of communication platforms on the internet, especially email.

There is no alternative here. There is no company that will ever solve the problem, within the existing email protocol, where one unencrypted sender (say, marketing emails) can send to a so-called “encrypted receiver” and not have an intermediary able to temporarily read the emails. This is inherent in the design of the system. ProtonMail is not end-to-end encrypted in this case, and no email provider can be on the traditional web.

There are no alternatives. There is no hard, scientific, mathematical solution to this. The best you’ll get is “soft encryption”—the equivalent of encryption where the third party offering the service chooses the encryption key.

bigdang··on I'm concerned with the move that FreeCodeCamp just pulled by leaving Medium
It might help to explain the Medium third party publication system, as it wouldn’t exactly be clear to people who haven’t experienced it before.
