big_youth··on A Floating Mass of Fire Ants in Texas
Not disagreeing with him as I have no knowledge of the court system but driving around Houston the number of gun stores is insane.
big_youth··on Announcing the Windows Bounty Program
Plenty of brokers exist, I'm personally familiar with Exodus Intelligence and Zerodium
big_youth··on Detroit's fabled Packard plant gets makeover
115K to 425K in 4 years? Which neighborhood is that? Even on the Eastside that seems insane.
big_youth··on How can a programmer help The New York Times report stories?
This is essential!!

I recently purchased the domain cnnisfake.news to expose all the times the media releases a fake story. This thread and posts have inspired me to get it working!!

I saw a bunch of examples just like this:

Sometimes the fake accounts will even have identical comments and only post in each others comment chains.

big_youth··on America’s system of checks and balances might struggle to contain a despot
In my social circles we are ecstatic that Trump is following through on his promises.
big_youth··on Trump’s Next Move on Immigration to Hit Closer to Home for Tech
I live in SF and hate how glibly techies talk about secession.

It may be because I grew up in the south and it's part of our history but techies seem to forget that the bloodiest US conflict in history was to prevent this very thing. To even entertain the idea that secession would not result in a mass amounts of destruction death exemplifies the Bay area bubble mentality.

big_youth··on Dow Hits 20000 for First Time
He did put in a provision to prohibit federal agencies from hiring contractors. From the order: "Contracting outside the Government to circumvent the intent of this memorandum shall not be permitted."

I haven't seen a single fake news site report that though, they are all pushing the alternative fact that contractors will be hired en mass.

big_youth··on Doomsday Prep for the Super-rich
This article disagrees with you: https://aeon.co/essays/how-did-the-introduction-of-guns-chan...

"It is common to deride early modern firearms as slow to load, inaccurate and undependable in wet weather. Indians had a more favourable opinion of these weapons, particularly of the flintlock muskets that became available at the beginning of the 1630s. ...

Flintlocks were still cumbersome. They required about 25 seconds to load, and were accurate only to about 100 yards. Yet Indians did not intend to use the weapon in open-field, pitched battles. Rather, they wanted flintlocks to fire on human or animal targets from ambush at close range. After firing, they would rush in with hand weapons. The manner in which Native peoples used guns is critical to understanding their demand for them."

big_youth··on The World’s Most Innovative Economies
It was not recent but a century ago Ohio came up with chewing gum, light bulbs, the first gas powered auto, flight, the, the first vacuum, and founded the first coed and interracial college.

A little more innovate than online banking stuff.

big_youth··on Basic income is the worst response to automation
I think your alternatives for a factory worker are interesting as they are jobs whose wages I know are being driven down by (often illegal) immigrant labor. House cleaning is the most notorious and has almost always been done by fresh off the boat immigrants for peanuts, I pay my mexican maid in Austin $75 in cash for a day of labor. Elder care pays employees a bit more but usually less than $10 an hr. How many jokes are there that maids or elder care nurses are from foreign nations? Just the other day I saw a Seinfeld episode where the elderly care taker was african and didn't speak english. Of your suggestions the only with decent pay is nursing which requires a degree and my mom constantly complains about the thousands of oversee nurses they fly over every year to drive down her wages. Similar to how Tech the employers complain about the huge talent shortage but don't pay competitive salaries and rather import labor.

I don't know where I'm going with this other than to say that the Trump voters are justifiably angry at the WHOLE DAMN SYSTEM and suggesting the entire rust belt become house cleaners or personal aides is silly.

big_youth··on Ask HN: What did you do after quitting the IT industry and how have things been?
This was enlightening. I've met many women who couldn't articulate it, but have described the same feelings after meeting a husband who supported them becoming stay at home moms.
big_youth··on Map of gang territories in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley
I once dated a girl who said her ex was a cocaine dealer in the Mission. Born and raised in the neighborhood, him and his crew would have constant scuffles with other small 'gangs' over drug territory. Once he was stabbed multiple times during an altercation over which crew had rights to sell coke at Beauty Bar. She told me this while we were sitting in Dolores and she saw him and his crew smoking weed and drinking in the sun.

Edit: Looking at the map it's kind of interesting that Beauty Bar is on 19th street, which according to this map is on the boundary of three gang territories. I've always felt that the mission is a still sketchy place.

big_youth··on Ask HN: How was your experience hiring a white hat hacker?
I'm a white hat hacker!

I think a better question is what are you looking for or what type of organization do you run or work for? A good security firm can provide application reviews to find everything from xss bugs in your web app to remote code execution in kernel components. This is done either black-box or source assisted and staffed with a team reflective of the size and complexity of the application.

Another aspect of security assessments can be network and infrastructure, these generally mean someone running nmap and looking for entry ways further into your network. I am biased but my organization almost never fails to find critical bugs or breach networks.

I'm not a salesman but my firm is NCC Group, we are a global pure security consulting firm, which means we don't make or push products. We also have tons of research https://www.nccgroup.trust/us/our-research/ which you can check out to see a sample of what you be paying security consultants for.

big_youth··on The psychology of stress and burnout
I would say that baking the bread is the easy part. Dealing with customers, managing employees, getting to the bakery at 3am EVERY DAY, and dealing with other business bureaucracy is the mentally taxing component.
big_youth··on The psychology of stress and burnout
My father was a baker for a large portion of his life. It really is difficult work, with insane hours, for low pay.

Maybe it's because I grew up in a working class mexican neighborhood where trades and unskilled work are the majority of occupations, but sitting in an office chair for 7hrs a day is paradise compared to baking, mechanics, or any type of manual labor.

big_youth··on Lynis – Security Auditing Tool for Linux, MacOS, and Unix-Based Systems
Yes, I'm a security consultant and we often run this on client machines during security tests. It provides a nice assessment of the machine.
big_youth··on Americans Work 25% More Than Europeans, Study Finds
Have anything beyond hyperbole?

The highest healthcare costs per capita:

US $8,713 Switzerland $6,325 Norway $5,862 Netherlands $5,131 Sweden $4,904

Expensive yes, but not extreme compared to some of the other richest European countries.

big_youth··on Americans Work 25% More Than Europeans, Study Finds
Studying the charts, only 6 counties exist in both info graphics. Some observations;

Switzerland is the happiest country but works the second most hours Belgium works the third least hours and is at 19 on the happiness chart * The US is still in the top 15 happiest countries

big_youth··on Millennials Don’t Use Credit Cards Because They Have No Money
We on HN are lucky to live in a world where at 24 we are fighting 6 figure jobs offers but the rest of my millennial friends do not have that experience.

The median income for a 29yr old is $35k[0], which is barely enough to buy a house in B or C cities.

My grandfather came from mexico, worked at a factory and was able to raise 3 kids, buy a house, rental property, and lincolns for my grandma. Can anyone say the same thing about a lower middle class worker now?

big_youth··on A Swede Returns to Silicon Valley from China
China uses IP laws to their advantage all the time, here is a story where apple lost the case to a small phone company. The article goes on to say "Legitimate lawsuits are on the rise as Chinese companies build up their intellectual property through research and development".

big_youth··on ThinkPwn: System Management Mode arbitrary code execution
My coworker replaced his BIOS/UEFI with an open source version (thinkpads enable this). It allowed him bypass Lenovo’s whitelisting of “approved” hardware, so he could install his own 3g modem.

He repurposed an old Arduino into an SPI flasher and a chip clip to sit on the bios flash chip.

big_youth··on A Building Boom in Boston?
Well the article starts by saying "affluent young professionals" and talking about "millennial-friendly extras" but I agree. The people paying $1.5million+ on condos are executive and VP types, but that still leads me to my question...

Who is buying those? I work at and work with companies based out of the bay area, seems like most of those senior big money roles are not in Austin.

But I'm not a real estate developer and don't know the entire Austin tech scene either...

big_youth··on A Building Boom in Boston?
Downtown Austin TX is exploding in high-rises and I ask myself that same question.

I mean if I, a single, mid 20's, tech guy, making 6+ figures isn't willing to spend $3k on a one bedroom apartment or $1.3 million on a condo(like the software dev in the article, wait what?!) then who is?

I have a 2bd, 3 miles from downtown for $1k a month and newly built/refurbished homes in the same area are going for $600K. I just don't know who is buying in the towers. I have heard the vacancies are quite high and most of the buildings look empty from the outside.

big_youth··on Uber Hacking: How we found out who you are, where you are and where you went
This is awesome.

I'm in infosec and there has been a lot of talk within my circles about the 'top' facebook security guys going to work for uber. Makes me happy that even the leet(lol) security guys let major vulnerabilities steep through.

big_youth··on College Unaffordable Even in Higher Income Brackets
Hi fellow UT CS grad.

I had to google for an article I remember reading a while ago but apparently over half of UT grads come from families that make over $100k+. It's not as bad as I thought but UT Austin has a much higher representation of (upper) middle class kids than lower class kids.
