biermic··on Should I Build a SaaS or Focus on Getting a Dev Job?
The coding part of building a SaaS is the easier one. Get a job and build on the side
biermic··on Ask HN: Is Cloudflare R2 working for you?
Nope, we just decided to migrate to S3
biermic··on Ask HN: Is AG Grid worth it?
I've integrated it into two projects. Users loved it.
biermic··on Ask HN: Is maintaining a personal blog still worth it?
Back in 2006 my blog got me a girlfriend. I think exposure in any way is beneficial.
biermic··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
I don't, they'd probably rather sell what is left.

2 things to add:

- I'd decouple the database writes with a message queue.

- Make sure that table is partitioned if you haven't. TimescaleDB's hyper tables are a good compromise here if you are already using Postgres..

biermic··on Ask HN: What is the smartest person you know working on?
A lot of things but not really much at the same time

biermic··on Ask HN: Have any of you quit your job to explore startup ideas?
Could you reduce to 24 hrs per week? That would be 3 full days out of 7.
biermic··on Ask HN: Has anyone started over outside of tech?
That sounds like a wonderful lifestyle!

biermic··on Ask HN: Real-world anecdotes of MySQL at scale?
I have one running with a ~5TB big unpartitioned table. Adding ~9M rows per day, with significant read load via 2 replicas. Works just fine on a 32 GB memory RDS instance. There is another table half the amount of rows and I join the two 1000s of times a day.

Took a bit of fiddling around to have things run stable. Currently migrating to Redshift, which has stellar performance but comes with its own problems.

biermic··on Someone is pretending to be me
Had this happen to me as a client on Upwork.

Interviewed some Italian guy, but when the job started a Russian guy with Asian roots was on the cam.

Somehow I understand his situation, but nevertheless ended the call after one minute.

biermic··on Engineer distributes resume via IPv6 traceroute
Some CTO guy who I work with does this with the password for internal docs. He thinks he is 1337.

How long will it take, until someone gains access? I consider this an intentional security leak.

biermic··on Social engineering GoDaddy (2021)
I also have heard of such a story. A friend of mine did something similar a long time ago.

Someone posted malicious stuff on his website, which showed up when googling my friends name. This costed him quite some business.

He knew the email address of the website owner, and the provider where the website was hosted. So he registered the same email address under a different free email hosting provider. Then he sent the website hoster an e-mail where he told them about a new email address and if they could change it. With that he could reset the password and delete the website.

biermic··on Billing systems are a nightmare for engineers
I haven't but will do. Thanks for the links!
biermic··on Billing systems are a nightmare for engineers
Curious, what are you working on?
biermic··on Billing systems are a nightmare for engineers
It's hard to figure out what it can do. Everywhere is their branding. As I understand they just send payment receipts, but no invoices.

I'd like to offer a free trial. While they have support for this, a user needs to enter his credit card right at sign up for trials to work.

So in the end I have to build a hybrid solution where my system gets tied to theirs. Still I don't have full control over all e-mails that are sent to the user. I'm not 100% happy, but better than not charging money.

biermic··on Billing systems are a nightmare for engineers
Exactly that. While stripe would tick my needs, it's gonna cause some headaches on the long run. They can calculate the taxes meanwhile, but you have to still take care of e.g. MOSS yourself.
biermic··on Billing systems are a nightmare for engineers
Absolutely agree with the poster. This is my life at the moment. Just to take money for a small piece of software I built.

Multiple currencies, trial periods, when in the process do you ask for the creditcard, country specific taxes,... And the worst: invoices.

While paddle.com takes care of many of those things - I was shocked after realizing how much work this is going to be.

Please think carefully about those things before you quit your job to work on your "Micro SaaS" or "unicorn startup".

biermic··on Ask HN: How to find Freelance work in Berlin?

biermic··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea (2020)
Appreciate your answer.

I built a very niche monitoring product for sysadmins. Actually I built it for myself three years ago, but I want to explore if others would pay for it.

If you are in the space, or anyone else who reads this I'd be grateful to receive some feedback on a 10 minute video call.

What are some possible ways to invest a few hundred bucks, for getting interviews with intended customers? I'm truly curious.

Or do you mean he should have invested into a designer to create mockups?

biermic··on North Korea hacked him, so he took down its internet
So that guy downloaded some random "hacking tool" a friend of his found, and no shit it had a backdoor. He was never directly targeted by the North Koreans.
