bibyte··on Users hate change
I think there shouldn't be change in a software project just for the sake of change. It should be okay to just maintain a project without changing major parts of it. Unfortunately there are some projects that just go the opposite way. Major UI changes every few months just for the sake of it. As for myself I am not opposed to changes, but only when it's meaningful.
bibyte··on Inject code into running Python processes (2017)
See this file: https://github.com/lmacken/pyrasite/blob/develop/pyrasite/in...

It uses GDB to attach to the process. And then evaluates the code inside the process using GDB.

bibyte··on A friendly web development tutorial for complete beginners (2017)
Good point. But I don't think a complete beginner would use complex JS frameworks.
bibyte··on A friendly web development tutorial for complete beginners (2017)
Pretty good website. But why Atom ? A plain text editor would work just as well and would be even easier.

I am not sure I agree that developing for the web is hard. In fact because it is so easy JavaScript is so popular right now.

bibyte··on Unity, now valued at $6B, raising up to $525M
That is just a side effect of having a large user base.
bibyte··on Fast Software, the Best Software
I am sorry but I don't understand you. There are two categories of software I use. One that I use daily and the other I rarely use. Speed is only important for me in the first category. I hope that clears things up.
bibyte··on Fast Software, the Best Software
Speed is important for me too. BUT only for the software that I use daily. I could find faster alternatives for some software that I use. But what's the point when I rarely use them.
bibyte··on Quiet Hacker News (2017)
Those are the exact same reason why I have stopped reading any threads that aren't technical. And of course politics. Almost any thread that has even a hint of politics will always turn into an echo chamber. Where anyone who doesn't agree with the echo chamber will be down voted.
bibyte··on Apple reveals App Store takedown demands by governments
I agree. Android is not without it's problems but at least I can run my own code on it without jumping through hoops.
bibyte··on From Python to Go to Rust: an opinionated journey (2018)
I went through the same path as OP. But instead of discarding them I am still using all three of them. And at least for me Python and Rust don't even compete with each other.
bibyte··on What Finally Killed AirPower
Why did they have to cancel it entirely ? They could have just use a small number of coils just like every other wireless charger.
bibyte··on Which Programming Languages Use the Least Electricity? (2018)
So Rust is a little bit more efficient then C++. That's kind of surprising. And I knew Lisp was fast but I am still surprised it scored so high.
bibyte··on The Death of External Storage: Where's Google?
This is just so sad. A proper filesystem is one of the distinctive feature of Android. If I wanted IOS like restrictions I would buy an iPhone.
bibyte··on Why GNU grep is fast (2010)
From my experience GNU CLI tools make a particular effort to be really fast (even on embedded hardware).
bibyte··on Worried about Huawei? Take a closer look at Tencent
I am wondering how popular WeChat and QQ is outside of China. The most worrying news for me is Tencent investment in Reddit.
bibyte··on Stellarium 0.19
This looks awesome. I can't believe I am just discovering it (looks like it has been around for a long time).
bibyte··on Common statistical tests are linear models
I was also surprised to learn that HN allowed this. Even more surprising is the fact that sometimes it doesn't allow to re-post posts that are months old. I wish it was more clearly documented in the FAQ.
bibyte··on Developing for Android is like being a demonetized YouTuber
As an Android user it feels like Android is getting more and more IOS like with every new release. Seriously I wouldn't be surprised if they locked down the filesystem (like IOS) in the name of security.
bibyte··on Learning Ada
> It's the only language I've ever used that tended to produce programs that worked correctly on their first run

From my experience that is generally true with languages that have strong static type systems (like Haskell and Rust).

bibyte··on Learning Ada
I really like the format of this article. From my very brief experience with Ada it seemed like a very well designed language to me. It's a shame it didn't get popular enough to compete with C and C++.
bibyte··on By the book: reflections on an Indian childhood reading Soviet hardbacks
This is really fascinating. Because even though I am an Indian I didn't know the Soviet Union and India were that close. I wonder if any Indian school books mention this.
bibyte··on Rust is not a good C replacement
Yeah that's what stands out to me as well. I wish the author had put that sentence at the top. The biggest feature of Rust is it's safety. If you don't care for the biggest feature of a language then it shouldn't be a surprise that you don't like the language.
bibyte··on Local Variables
That's a good point. I also have a problem with zoning out when reading technical books. I should give your technique a try.
bibyte··on Local Variables
> Type by hand his source code following along and trying to comprehend the details?

Isn't that the only way to learn from any programming book ? At least that's what I have always done. I am curious as to what other way people learn.

bibyte··on Mathigon – an interactive, personalized mathematics textbook
Now this is an awesome way to learn math. I just tried the "Graphs and Networks" course and it's so easy. I hope they release more courses soon.
bibyte··on Three protocols and a future of the decentralized internet
The biggest problem with decentralized protocol (in practice) is still the speed. Centralized protocols are simply faster. I am hoping someone will discover a way to make decentralized protocols fast in the future. I am personally rooting for IPFS.
bibyte··on Show HN: Everything I Know Wiki
I got really inspired by it a few months ago and created my own repository. Thank you for the idea OP.
bibyte··on Air-breathing rocket engine set for key tests
I wonder if this technology will ever be viable for commercial flights in the future. What the safety procedures would look like at that speed.
bibyte··on Ask HN: Best Fiction Hacker Books?
https://www.teamten.com/lawrence/writings/coding-machines/

This is not a book but it is the best fiction featuring programmers I have ever seen.

Edit: Looks like it is also available as an ebook.

bibyte··on Rust Cookbook
Another great book that is completely free and open source. Rust might be a little harder to learn then other languages but you can't deny that it has great resources if you decide to learn it.
