bibabaloo··on Career advice for young system programmers
Can almost guarantee that they're underpaying V for the honor too.
bibabaloo··on Rust vs. Go in 2023
I think it's one of those things where you need to drink the coolaid. Once you get over the learning hump and fighting against you, you won't want to go back to languages with poorer and less strict type systems. There a lot of value in letting the compiler do it for you
bibabaloo··on I feel like I made a mistake investing professionally into Flutter
Are mobile stacks so specialised that it's difficult to switch between them?

Out of curiosity, how long would it take a flutter dev to become productive in some other stack?

bibabaloo··on Origin of correlated isolated flat bands in LK99
If this could be simulated, can you help me understand why we couldn't have used simulation to find promising SC materials to investigate further earlier? Are there just too many permutations to investigate?

It seems to my own naive self that if LK99 is the real deal, we mostly just got lucky finding it.

bibabaloo··on Semiconducting Transport in LK99 reproduction attempt
How many days have scientists been working on this? Like 2, not including the weekend? I'm impressed that results and papers are already starting to come out.
bibabaloo··on Semiconducting Transport in LK99 reproduction attempt
There's betting markets on this, aren't there? The super cynical take is that the original scientists know that it's a fraud but in the lead up to it being proven as fraud can make a lot of money before coming out and saying "sorry, we messed up, experimental errors etc etc"
bibabaloo··on Ask HN: Is the market bad, or am I having the worst luck job hunting?
No matter how you define it, there's people that start working at a senior level much faster than others.

There's both QR codes that are links to menus and QR codes that are links to interactive menus you can order directly from. Usually the latter will require some sort of sign up.
bibabaloo··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
This is sad, but the silver lining is that the official app is horrible enough that it will more or less force me to go cold turkey on breaking my Reddit addiction.
bibabaloo··on Swing VPN app is a DDoS botnet
Pretty harsh to say that this is a hilarious conclusion when your own conclusion seems even more rash. If your conclusion was the case, wouldn't that mean there'd also have to be people interested in scraping random (static) https://www.science.gov.tm/ pages?

None of those companies allow third party apps, do they?
bibabaloo··on Using unmodified third-party Reddit apps with a custom server
Or build your own proxy that uses whatever private API the official app uses?

Seems like the perfect solution if you want to keep using Reddit with your own choice of app.

bibabaloo··on Join our CEO tomorrow to discuss the API
I think it's primarily because of discovery. Reddit makes it really easy to find communities for your interests and makes it low effort to start engaging with them. I don't need to check 10 different forums, I just load up my Reddit home page.

bibabaloo··on Banshees of Inisherin: The Game
Well, I couldn't disagree more with this. :)

Both are wonderful Black comedies, imo. I agree that the story and characters are different (but that's to be expected given they are different movies after all) but the mood is similar between the two. I'll concede that Banshees is darker than Bruges, though.

bibabaloo··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
I think the parent poster's point was that Bing only has to convince a script kiddy to to run a command, it doesn't need full outbound access
bibabaloo··on Tailscale bug allowed a person to share nodes from other tailnets without auth
Super cool find! Interested to hear how/why you came across this in the first place.
bibabaloo··on Evolution of the Ethereum proof-of-stake consensus protocol
My (maybe naive) understanding is that proof of stake is actually better here, no? Stakers would need to commit to one particular fork and accept that their stake (in ETH) would be lost/slashed in all other forks.

In contrast, in PoW, there's nothing stopping miners from creating a hostile fork that is economically advantageous to them (despite maybe being "worse" overall) and then flipping back to the original chain if their fork doesn't work out. Their hash power can't be slashed in the same way stakers ETH can be in PoS.

bibabaloo··on Copilot Internals
Have you tried writing a comment as a prompt for copilot?
bibabaloo··on Kraken lays off 30% of staff
Absolutely.

It makes sense; if your competitors are hiring, you need to hire in order to keep up and so you don't get out-executed. If they're firing, then maybe you don't need to "keep up with the Jones" as much.

I'm guessing you're mostly watching alone? If you want to watch with others then watching on a TV is really the only possibility.
bibabaloo··on Tether's Troubles in November 2022
Can someone explain why the bank run on Tether hasn't already happened?

We've seen with FTX that it only takes a little FUD for people to get scared and start withdrawing.

It's not like there isn't more credible stablecoin alternatives, USDC looks a lot more credible.

bibabaloo··on Project Starline expands testing through an early access program
Wonder how the folks at https://tonari.no/ feel about this.
bibabaloo··on Ask HN: Never held a job. In what ways companies use email internally nowadays?
In my experience working for tech startups for the last 5 years that have had between 10-5000 people, your assumptions are correct. Emails are only used for external communications and for receiving Jira/Confluence/CI/GDocs/etc notifications. Nobody sends emails internally, all communication is over Slack.
bibabaloo··on Understanding Jane Street
From the article:

> One example of this is NAV trading (Jane Street has a paper here), where an investor wants to place a large trade in an ETF and agrees to buy it at some future point at whatever its net asset value is, less some small fee.

Should this say "agrees to buy it at some future point at whatever its net asset value is *NOW*"? Otherwise, I'm confused, why wouldn't the investor just buy it later?

bibabaloo··on Embed is in C23
> How would such a platform without file systems handle #include?

I don't think it would, you'd cross-compile for it on a platform with a file system. I think the parent poster's point was that C is the only option for some ultra low resources platforms and that a conservative approach should be taken to add new features in general. I don't think they were saying that specifically that not having a filesystem is problematic for this particular inclusion.
