bhtru··on Facebook reveals its cryptocurrency Libra
Agreed, it's not as though Visa/MC will decide to exit a country altogether foregoing any revenue.
bhtru··on Google to restrict modern ad blocking Chrome extensions to enterprise users
With this course of action it may be compelling enough to give consumer users a reason to ditch Chrome.
bhtru··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
If you have time, can you elaborate why you believe Google is a larger threat to personal liberty and privacy?

bhtru··on Finance makes Apple and Google forced friends
The default browser for iOS is Safari whose default search engine is Google. Does the comparison hold true still?
bhtru··on Finance makes Apple and Google forced friends
Is it incorrect to believe that there’s more telemetry sent to Google on an Android device vs an iPhone? IIRC, Google specific cookies in Chrome desktop can’t necessarily be turned off by typical methods so can we infer that a device running Android has more monitoring a la that vein than an iPhone?

Hardware capital of the world.
bhtru··on Alphabet's cyber unit Jigsaw introduces a new security app to bust censorship
Whataboutism wasn’t necessarily the point I intended on making. Rather if Google employees feel morally infringed at the prospect of Dragonfly for reasons described why then do they give a pass to their own state? Of course the USA & China differ vastly on governance but what’s the use of principles if you selectively apply them?

Is there a difference to how the NSA does same albeit with a time delay instead of being instantaneous?

When I went to finally get my SE a few months after release all stock but the 64gb rose gold were sold. I’m a dude but I wanted the phone so bad that I didn’t mind the colour.
bhtru··on Amazon is stuffing its search results pages with ads
Couldn’t malicious sellers circumvent this by sending quality product initially and then swapping it later on?

bhtru··on The Machine Fired Me
This was how Simplii and BMO (two Canadian banks) were hacked earlier this year.

> The hackers explained that they were able to breach the banks’ sub-par security by using an algorithm to generate account numbers and then posing as customers who had forgotten their passwords.

“They were giving too much permission to half-authenticated account which enabled us to grab all these information,” the email said, adding that the system “was not checking if a password was valid until the security question were input correctly.”

bhtru··on The end of India’s ‘IT miracle’?
Consequence of demographics? Competition in India and China are arguably fiercer because of scale. If you’re not pulling out all the stops then you might be handicapping yourself relative to your peers.
bhtru··on The end of India’s ‘IT miracle’?
If you can make it in the West you’ll leave your homeland typically. Tech is a sector that often can is merit based so it’s not difficult for foreign engineers to prove their worth and make the migration (relative to other service sector industries).

bhtru··on Google bans cryptocurrency ads
There’s just too many poor ICOs launching and floating around for Google to moderate and police all the potential ads they’d buy. Google has shown no issue with deliberately reducing the service of it’s product to offset future headaches before.
bhtru··on Stride, Atlassian’s Slack competitor, opens its API to all developers
I've not ever used Stride however I've now just tried it as a curiosity to see this UI that you find fault with. It feels figuratively just like Slack. I'm actually surprised just how similar it is in so many respects. So I'd love to hear your elaboration on the poorness of the Stride UI.
bhtru··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
Star Wars is soft sci-fi as opposed to hard sci-fi like 2001: A Space Odyssey.
bhtru··on A letter about Google AMP
Naive to assume that the largest portal for the web can't have a detrimental effect on the web. As that's what this is. The clout Google has in driving web standards is both a positive and negative. In the case of AMP the consequences of the trajectory Google is on now can set the precedent for other networks and ultimately lead to further centralization of content.
bhtru··on PwC Hong Kong first Big Four firm to accept bitcoin
People don't consider EY Switzerland as one of the "Big Four". You're right though EY Switzerland did this same move roughly one year ago.
bhtru··on WeWork has bought Flatiron School
It's a success if it works out. It's a calculated risk right now.
bhtru··on How supermarkets choose where to open and close
Would you order your other groceries online though? For a lot people in the west their diet is comprised of more than just fresh produce.
bhtru··on Cloudflare Stream – Combines video encoding, global delivery, and player
Do we need to stop Akamai, AWS CouldFront, MaxCDN, Rackspace, et al, too?
bhtru··on USA Facts – Federal, state, and local data from government sources
That's the beauty of it though. These are cold hard facts and as long as the veracity of the data is held true the insight can be enormous. The recent dialogue of fake news has made the public think far more about the media and information they're consuming. With something like public records where there is a significant paper trail it'll be much harder to dispute than climate change. There's a tangibility to this versus the at times ephemeral quality of climate change. There's concrete dates printed or typed into documents versus trends and weather patterns. 538 in this past election cycle anecdotally to me received a huge boost in readership due in part from the data journalism. I do think people are inclined to be skeptical of any "fact" but with government records I believe that skepticism quietens.
