bhalperin··on Humans who are not concentrating are not general intelligences
*she :)
bhalperin··on Facebook Is Developing a Cryptocurrency for WhatsApp Transfers, Sources Say
Call it a “cryptocurrency” if that makes it sound sexy, but this is still centralized — it’s effectively the same as the (already existing) Messenger Payments.
bhalperin··on The scale of tech winners
"The division of labor is limited by the extent of the market"
bhalperin··on SpaceX Is Now One of the World’s Most Valuable Privately Held Companies
Revenue != valuation

(but you might still be correct!)

bhalperin··on Elon Musk has just received verbal approval for a NYC-Philadelphia-DC hyperloop
Does "verbal approval" mean... anything, in the context of local construction regulation?

Best of luck to Musk, but there must be a misunderstanding going on here, or he is being somewhat misleading in use of the term "approval".

bhalperin··on Why Cutting Carbs Is So Tough
How'd you get rid of the acne?

I for one would be interested in reading more about how you set this up!

bhalperin··on Bugger: Maybe spies aren't very good at their jobs (2013)
> To my delight Audible managed to get the same narrator.

Stefan Rudnicki (the narrator) is an absurdly good narrator. He regularly narrates the Lightspeed Magazine podcast, a sci-fi short story podcast, if that perchance interests you.

bhalperin··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a founder anymore
Wow, this gave me the realization I needed about why I've been procrastinating on a project. Thanks.
bhalperin··on Nearly 1 in 3 drugs have a significant safety issue after FDA approval
Scott Alexander [1] has some useful (critical) comments: "significant safety issue" is not necessarily what it sounds like.

bhalperin··on Waymo’s lawsuit against Uber is going to trial, judge rules
Where is Uber available on the secondary market? It's not available through either EquityZen or SharesPost.
bhalperin··on China's Didi Raises Over $5.5B in Record Tech Funding
This is going to vary massively city to city, just as it does for Uber/Lyft/Grab in other countries.
bhalperin··on Netflix expected to spend over $6B on original and acquired programming in 2017
Know any good longreads on this?
bhalperin··on Why Y Combinator Made All the Difference
Best of luck :)
bhalperin··on Snap Jumps in Debut After App Maker Raises $3.4B in IPO
Matt Levine explains this well https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-11-25/appeals-c...
bhalperin··on “Health benefits” of moderate drinking disappear when controlling for wealth
Do you know any good overviews of Mendelian randomization?
bhalperin··on How Australia is stubbing out smoking
These kinds of efforts seem to be having great success not just in Australia but at least in the United States[1] as well.

What I don't understand is -- why isn't a similar education, advertising, and taxation effort being made with alcohol? The negative externalities associated with alcohol are mind-boggling[2].

bhalperin··on Show HN: An open source cross-platform minimalistic cryptocurrency tracker
Hm, I wonder if coincap just takes generic cryptocurrency prices and converts them at going exchange rates. I.e., the prices aren't 100% tradeable.
bhalperin··on Show HN: An open source cross-platform minimalistic cryptocurrency tracker
This is cool, but I wish coincap.io was more transparent about their data sourcing. Which exchange(s) is/are they sourcing from? This data can't be coming from ShapeShift (the owners of coincap.io), since prices on coincap.io are in USD while you cannot trade in fiat whatsoever on Shapeshift.
bhalperin··on Dropbox Could Have One of 2017’s Most Interesting IPOs
Dropbox does not cooperate well with symlinks. For instance, if you create a symlink in your Dropbox folder to My Documents on Windows, the Dropbox folder will duplicate the My Documents files. Takes up twice the space.
