bhalp1··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2017)
The Practical Dev | JavaScript Developer | New York City

We are @ThePracticalDev on Twitter. That's the fastest way to get to know what we're about. Our site is https://dev.to

We're on the lookout for a disciplined developer who likes writing tests and docs, and enjoys our content. Email ben@dev.to if you're interested. Local is a bonus, but remote is cool too.

bhalp1··on A story of a designer learning math
I'm reading that too. Really enjoying it. It's kind of a bad title for what the book is really about, which is general learning and productivity strategies.
bhalp1··on Which editor/IDE do you use and why?
I run the linked site (and started that thread). I'd love it if you signed up <3
bhalp1··on The Reality of Developer Burnout
I feel you, man.
bhalp1··on Some Google Pixel devices shutting down at 30% battery
Yes. I deal with this.
bhalp1··on 10 Tech Movies to Get You Coding Again
Nice call. I just downloaded this on Spotify and will make it part of my routine.
bhalp1··on YC’s 2016 Holiday Gift Guide
Your point is true, but it's also likely that the model for a lot of these companies is to start with premium so they can focus on a profitable model and get the supply chain and execution worked out while there is still wiggle room, and then move down market. This is what Uber and Tesla did, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is the most fashionable approach these days.

There are probably plenty of exceptions, as well, like Dollar Shave Club.

bhalp1··on Google’s top news link for ‘final election results’ is a fake news site
Also, going with the electoral college suppresses overall voter turnout in states that are "locks" like California, New York, Oklahoma, etc.

If I live in California, I'm less incentivized to show up for the election because I think of it as a lock. Obviously I should still show up to vote elsewhere on the ballot, but I may not because I won't influence the election.

If we were measuring by popular vote, turnout would be a lot higher and the outcome would, likely, be a better representation of the country.

bhalp1··on Our hiring process at Argo
Author here. Any questions?
bhalp1··on The target=“_blank” vulnerability by example
If you link to my site with target="_blank" and without rel="noopener" or some other preventative measure, that's all that needs to happen. The JavaScript is run on the other person's website. So all you have to do is link to their site and they get access to the location of the tab of the original site. No XSS or anything needed.
bhalp1··on Why and How I Switched from Python to Erlang
If you're on iPhone you can use the reader button. Android may have something similar. Obviously I agree with the advice though.
bhalp1··on Upload files to your repositories
I would think that this sort of feature was underway well before most of the negative feedback came in. This might be the reason they announced the feature before it was live though.
bhalp1··on Chris Seaton on Massively Improving Ruby Performance with JRuby+Truffle
Yeah I think this is very exciting and this sort of development could be of great importance for programming in the future. There are certainly more possible complaints than performance with Ruby but when you take a top layer that people are generally pretty satisfied with and make it much better under the hood, you are going to have a big impact.

This idea is what made me excited to read about this and reach out to Chris to conduct this interview.

bhalp1··on Show HN: Teech.io - Parse for education apps developers
That API counter keeps resetting! How can I trust anything?
bhalp1··on How every smartphone platform gets the alarm clock wrong
Yeah, but the shame is that the author needs to make this bold claim in order to get readership, when the nuances of user experience are not black and white.
bhalp1··on Ask HN: Is it me or ...?
Some of these issues can be related to issues like depression in our field. This is a great watch on the topic: http://vimeo.com/72690223
