bgrohman··on Our Approach to Privacy
On the subject of privacy, I'm interested in migrating away from Google services, but I have years' worth of data tied up there (email, photos, music, movies, etc). I know Google offers ways to download your data, so it's technically possible to migrate, but it would be tedious and time consuming, to say the least.

Does anyone have suggestions for making that process easier?

bgrohman··on Chrome OS native development
I use a Chromebook with Crouton as my main personal laptop now, and it has worked well for me. I'm using i3wm instead of a traditional desktop environment.

bgrohman··on How to Live Without Google
Yes, it's still using the same kernel.
bgrohman··on How to Live Without Google
What about the chroot/Crouton route?
bgrohman··on How to Live Without Google
I've tried Google Takeout, but I have several hundred gigs of photos, so uploading them elsewhere will be a pain. Plus, wherever I do upload them will be lacking many of the features from Google Photos.
bgrohman··on How to Live Without Google
Interesting that the article offers no alternatives to Google Photos. I know there are options, but they all seem to be far behind in terms of features. Plus, migrating all of my photos out of Google Photos would be pain.
bgrohman··on Timeline representing the development of various Linux distros
Cool visualization. Interesting to see how big the Debian family is compared to the others.
bgrohman··on Lima – the cloud that respects your privacy
What will the price be once it's available? Also, why not use something like OwnCloud on a cheap desktop box?
bgrohman··on Ask HN: What is your password management solution?
Yep, it's good that LastPass seems to respond quickly to reported vulnerabilities. Who knows how long those issues existed before getting discovered, though. And some of them were quite serious.
bgrohman··on Ivy: a minimalist static site generator in Python
For a minimalist static site generator, I think it's hard to beat just writing your own that does exactly what you want and nothing else. In a hundred lines or less of Python, you can have your minimal generator, know exactly how it works and how to extend it, and be able to refresh your memory on conventions/configuration with thirty seconds of scrolling through the source.
bgrohman··on How Chrome OS, Termux, YubiKey and Duo Mobile make for great usable security
I have the Samsung Chromebook 3 (same size and resolution). I don't mind it at all. By comparison, the 14" Lenovo from my employer has the same resolution and looks worse. The Chromebook is no retina display, but it's not that bad in my opinion.
bgrohman··on How Chrome OS, Termux, YubiKey and Duo Mobile make for great usable security
"As far as Debian/Ubuntu (and crouton), that's fine as far as it goes, but then you don't end up with a Chromebook, just a cheap mini-notebook with flaky drivers."

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I went the Crouton route on my $169 Chromebook, and now I have both ChromeOS and Ubuntu. Plus I can switch between them quickly. And if I understand Crouton, the chroot is actually using the same kernel and drivers as ChromeOS. I haven't had any driver issues. And it's easy to set up encryption for your chroot. I think it's a good solution.

bgrohman··on Ask HN: How is HTML client-side testing done by big companies such as Google?
I've read most of that book and can recommend it. Buy a copy or check it out from your local library if you're curious and/or want some ideas for testing at your own company.
bgrohman··on Cloud just got easier
I think the title should be updated to match the article:

"Amazon makes cloud contract more customer-friendly as rivals loom"

This isn't about making anything easier other than legal questions around Amazon's contracts.

bgrohman··on Wikipedia pages have overlay in the text area: GNAA Notice – over Bumble app
Hmm, I wonder if Wikipedia intentionally allows users to add HTML or if they just missed some input sanitizing. Or could it just be clever use of the content editor - maybe the editor allows you to specify image dimensions? Still not sure how they would get the fixed-position wrapper div in there, though, without typing in the HTML.

View source, line 795:

bgrohman··on Amazon launches Spark, a shoppable feed of stories and photos
Yes, a new way to help people shop! It's just what we needed ;)
bgrohman··on The Problem with Abandoned Apps
"Since apps can disappear at any moment, I’m not going to devote much money to buying them nor will I invest significant time and energy into learning and using an app."

I've started to only consider using apps (ios or otherwise) if the apps are either a) open source and free, or b) have a business model that seems sustainable. And if they offer a way to export my data.

I've also started moving away from apps for a lot of my computing needs in favor of simpler methods that only rely on a local laptop.

bgrohman··on Ask HN: What is your password management solution?
Sure, take a look on Google's Project Zero and search for "LastPass":

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/list?can=1&q...

Or search the news for LastPass security issues:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=lastpass+security+issues&t=iphone&...

bgrohman··on Ask HN: What is your password management solution?
I switched from LastPass to KeePassXC a few months ago after reading about some LastPass security problems. I really like KeePassXC.
bgrohman··on Reading Is Forgetting (2015)
"The purpose of reading is not to pass some final judgement on the text, but to engage with what it has to offer to me now."

Agreed, and I can't help but wonder if an exploration of that topic would have been more worthwhile.

bgrohman··on Ask HN: Do you still use browser bookmarks?
Yes. I use multiple browsers, too, so I built a bookmark manager web app for personal use with grouping, tagging, and search.
bgrohman··on What CSS minifiers also leave behind
I like your site design. Very clean and readable.
bgrohman··on LastPass RCE vulnerability fixed
Most of the reported issues I've seen have been caused by browser extensions. It seems like uninstalling the extensions and just using the web app directly in a separate browser might go a long way towards avoiding these kinds of issues.
bgrohman··on LastPass RCE vulnerability fixed
Thanks. Are there any plans to have routine security audits done?
bgrohman··on LastPass RCE vulnerability fixed
Hi, I'm considering giving bitwarden a try. I'm curious, though - are there any 3rd party security scans for the product? And (only half-joking) can we get Tavis to review it?
bgrohman··on I will not log in to your website
"Whenever my deepest beliefs and my desire to get out of work both point in the same direction, from here till the grave there’s not a force in the world that can turn me the opposite way."

Words to live by.

bgrohman··on Ask HN: What are some good technology blogs to follow?
I wrote a personal bookmark web app to keep track of sites I visit frequently, group them, tag them, and search. It was a fun project, and I'm the only user, so there isn't any support overhead. It runs on a $5/month Linode instance.
bgrohman··on What the CIA WikiLeaks Dump Tells Us: Encryption Works
Thanks, that's a good message. In this case, though, the original article came from AP News, so I don't think there's anything wrong with reading it there.
