bgdkbtv··on Our position on open-weights models
I wish we had a good LLM developer toolset that is not Anthropic or OpenAI with sensible business and ethical practices and good performance.

Can't wait for local on machine LLMs that are on par with Opus/Fable.

bgdkbtv··on Steam Machine launches today
I will definitely be getting this regardless of price or specs. I'm no hard core gamer and I play Balatro, Vampire Survivors and occasional online Halo 2 with friends. This is perfect.

Too bad YouTube doesn't have a proper API for building 3rd party clients. I would love to build one and use it on my SteamDeck and on the big TV with the SteamMachine.

bgdkbtv··on LLMs can be exhausting
I think that if you build a solid foundation of your project and can articulate somewhat well what it is you want it to do, then you can expect a pretty good result. I typically limit my prompt to a specific file, often specify the lines and outline some of the logic and add references to other files where necessary. Then, Claude gets just enough context to to do what I want it to do.

Another trick I learnt is you can ask Claude to ask you comprehensive questions for clarification. Usually, it will then offer you a choice of 3 options per question that it might have and you can steer it towards the right implementation.

bgdkbtv··on Ask HN: How is AI-assisted coding going for you professionally?
For professional work, I like to offload some annoying bug fixes to Claude and let it figure it out. Then, perusing the changes to make sure nothing silly is being added to the codebase. Sometimes it works pretty well. Other times, for complicated things I need to step in and manually patch. Overall, I'm a lot less stressed about meeting deadlines and being productive at work. On the other hand, I'm more stressed about losing my employment due to AI hype and its effectiveness.

For my side projects, I do like to offload the tedious steps like setup, scaffolding or updating tasks to Claude. Things like weird build or compile errors that I usually would have to spend hours Googling to figure out I can get sorted in a matter of minutes. Other than that, I still like to write my own code as I enjoy doing it.

Overall, I like it as a tool to assist in my work. What I dislike is how much peddling is being done to shove AI into everything.

bgdkbtv··on Shatner is making an album with 35 metal icons
I am also confused as to how this is relevant to HN.
bgdkbtv··on Ladybird adopts Rust, with help from AI
This may sound stupid, but I wonder if using GPUI for a web browser could have some performance benefits...
bgdkbtv··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
Looks cool and congrats on the $1k MRR! Is the app built with electron?
bgdkbtv··on Building optimistic UI in Rails (and learn custom elements)
I really like custom elements, I wish they were more popular.
bgdkbtv··on How would you make this?
I suppose drawing rectangles as GeoJSON on a map is the easy part. How would you build the parking spots allocation within a selected area?
bgdkbtv··on Show HN: A iOS Native Bluesky App
How can you tell?
bgdkbtv··on Don't “let it crash”, let it heal
This is great, thanks for sharing! I've been thinking about improving error handling in my liveview app and this might be a nice way to start.
bgdkbtv··on How we made JSON.stringify more than twice as fast
Unrelated, but v8.dev website is incredibly fast! Thought it would be content preloading with link hovering but no. Refreshing
bgdkbtv··on Svelte 5 and the Future of Frameworks: A Chat with Rich Harris
I love Svelte and v5 is real nice with runes, what an incredible update. It works amazingly well with Elixir Phoenix thanks to live_svelte package.
bgdkbtv··on Phoenix LiveView 1.0.0 is here
Congrats! Love Phoenix and absolutely love LiveView
bgdkbtv··on Will the bubble burst for AI in 2025, or will it start to deliver?
I was skeptical at first, still am somewhat. However, I've been using OpenAI's app and its new search engine feature I can't see myself going back to traditional search engines.

I use copilot with Claude for software development, I cannot see myself going back to traditional autocomplete.

However, I do not see how else AI will revolutionize anything else especially now that they've hit the limits of what is currently possible with the technology of our time.

bgdkbtv··on Australia proposes ban on social media for those under 16
A lot of you who are supporting this are unaware that to enforce this, EVERYONE will have to have an online government ID and the government will be tracking EVERYONE's internet activity.
bgdkbtv··on Man who scammed country out of $130M using mobile game facing 89,000 years
We should have this punishment for politicians and govt scamming people out of billions, too, then. Make it fair on all sides.

bgdkbtv··on HN-text: an easy-to-use, text-first Hacker News terminal client
For sure! I don't work with Go so looking at it from a noob perspective
bgdkbtv··on HN-text: an easy-to-use, text-first Hacker News terminal client
Thanks for sharing! Browsed the source code and Go seems like a pleasant language! Either that or the author wrote very pretty code
bgdkbtv··on React Open Sources Compiler
While I think this is a great improvement for building better UIs, it still boggles my mind that React, V in the MVC, needs an entire build step with that many moving parts and complexity.

Hopefully this improves the DX, though. I dread touching anything written in React that is older than 6 months.

bgdkbtv··on LiveView Is Best with Svelte
AFAIK Blazor and Livewire (Laravel) were both inspired by LiveView.
bgdkbtv··on Distributed SQLite: Paradigm shift or hype?
Seems that 100 writes per second is more than enough for a typical CRM (for a local business).
bgdkbtv··on Distributed SQLite: Paradigm shift or hype?
How is it for writes? Would a CRM type system benefit from liteFS setup?
bgdkbtv··on Browsers are the most likely disruptor of the mobile duopoly
I'd choose using a native app over a web app or PWA

Especially lately with the mess that is modern web app development, native is currently the king

bgdkbtv··on I hate work
Great read! Very relatable and the author drivers really good points across.
bgdkbtv··on Ask HN: How do you handle code completion derailing your train of thought?
I think in VSCode you can prevent the suggestions box from appearing automatically and only trigger when you press the key combo of your choice.
bgdkbtv··on Stocketa – An app I designed, built and never launched
If you release this app, I will buy it as soon as it is available.

I've built and alpha released a booking management system for a local business that delivers construction materials.

The setup involves the operators that record bookings via phone calls into the booking system. Then they have the drivers perform deliveries for those bookings, which they track through the mobile apps that are powered by the booking system. I also built a quote calculator, which is an extension of the booking system. Here is the tech stack I’ve setup for productivity and fast iteration.

Booking system:

- MySQL

- Laravel

- Tailwind

- React & InertiaJS

Quote calculator:

- Laravel Powered API (queries the booking system)

- Tailwind

- React

Mobile apps:

- Laravel Powered API

- Flutter (iOS and Android)

- Laravel Sanctum for API Auth

Infrastructure:

- Twilio for SMS notifications

- GitHub for source code hosting

- Mailgun for transactional emails

- CloudFlare for DDoS protection and caching

- Firebase Cloud Messaging for push notifications

- Laravel Forge for server maintenance and deployments

I later hired a young and very talented developer that is now helping me maintain and further build the booking system while I shifted my primary focus to the apps.

Professionally, I am a frontend developer but have also developed full stack (Laravel based) systems for smaller client projects.

I wish I could share screenshots and the links but sadly for anonimity reasons I cannot.

Happy to answer questions and also open to feedback!
