I used to take HN seriously, but I can't anymore. After years of contributing, it's clear the site is allergic to criticism of itself. Meta commentary about moderation or culture gets recoded as "crankiness" and penalized, no matter how well-founded.

This isn't about one downvote. After 5 years I never reached the 501 karma required just to downvote, a basic function. That's a system that rewards conformity while suppressing dissent.

When I updated this bio with critique, the moderator asked if I wanted my account closed. When I pressed for an explanation, and pointed out how downvotes coincided with my emails, I got silence. That silence is its own answer.

HN isn't an open forum. It's internet feudalism: users generate the content, the lords guard the system, and feedback about that arrangement is unwelcome. That's why I'm done.

bezier-curve··on Why “go nuts, show nuts” doesn’t work in 2022
I was banned on Reddit for simply calling out a Reddit admin on my own profile. I keep trying to appeal it, but they don't care about my 12 years of good faith contributions to dozens of communities, hundreds of dollars given to their company through premium and awards, no the final straw was me simply calling out an admin who was on a power trip, who is also responsible for a PR blunder relatively recently with their place event.

I've lost so much respect for this company and it's actually made me also take a step back from social media in general. All of these companies can abuse you at any point without any transparency, and I'm not willing to take the risk anymore.

bezier-curve··on In the end, climate change is the only story that matters
> We've already established that countries with large amounts of cheap energy are going to be fine with climate change.

Are they? I don't think a climate feedback loop cares about human borders and their ability to source cheap energy.

I still use Fireworks CS6 for one-off mockups. I don't specialize in design myself, but I think that's exactly why I like using it - its UI is intuitive and simple. I've tried newer/maintained vector editors like Inkscape and Krita, and still feel like there's a void left by Fireworks for casual users like myself.
bezier-curve··on Ask HN: How to get un-shadow banned on Twitter?
Maybe Twitter doesn't owe individuals anything in particular but as a collective society I think we should be asking if it's okay for private companies that control a lot of online discourse for them to silently ban with no transparency. How do we know they're not making decisions based on a conflict of interest? Maybe there's some area for social media regulation.
bezier-curve··on I Got Banned for Life from Airbnb (2018)
Reddit has been circling the drain for a while content-wise. It wasn't until I tried to create my own subreddit (for my city) that one of the admins came reigning in on its purpose and tried to narrow down what I'm allowed to discuss. It was really eye opening as someone who jumped from digg to reddit in 2011 when media viewed reddit as the "wild west". I'm still reeling from the new level of censorship huge platforms like these are undergoing. It's disturbing, and unprecedented in its lack of transparency, considering how much power these companies have over society and influence.
bezier-curve··on I Got Banned for Life from Airbnb (2018)
This is basically what Reddit did to me. They suspended all of my accounts (and new ones) because I got too loud about how moderators are treated. It's interesting how much "corporate justice" and autocracies have in common.
bezier-curve··on Help Improve Gnome
> Stop using JavaScript all over the place, use compiled languages.

This is one of the things I like about GNOME. There is something to be said about a tech stack that's accessible and easy enough to use.

bezier-curve··on Understanding UseMemo and UseCallback
Maybe this has more to do with how people look at these paradigms. I find the class based lifecycle methods much easier to wrap my head around than hooks. I think hooks are more of an answer to higher order components. They make sense to me when I look at them that way, but as a replacement for classes, function components seem inferior from a maintainability perspective.

You don't need an economics education to understand the implication of wealth being concentrated in the hands of a few people. This idea that billionaires generate wealth is myth.
bezier-curve··on My students cheated... a lot
That's not possible because of regulation. For occupations that don't relate to other people's life or death situations, or security in general, it's reasonable to assume if someone has a skill, they should be able to use it professionally regardless of how they achieved it.
bezier-curve··on Clement Lefebvre: The Man Behind Linux Mint (2013)
I think you should allow people to have a space to tell their side. My side of the story is just as credible as his, the only difference is he's more well known, and if that alone is what you think matters most, it shows your bias.

That post was made 3 years ago. People change, and it does not invalidate the way I experienced what happened, even if I failed to articulate it effectively at the time. I only shared it to provide proof of the dispute, not to win sides.

> neither is it in your favor.

That doesn't matter though. The fact he is retaliating in public over a post that only references public information, using private information, is inherently bad faith acting. The context is what makes it unprofessional.

See the other response to my root comment, it links to a Reddit thread where you can find out who I really am, as he was using my full name to slander me. This is not anonymous internet slandering.

That is also your side of the story. It's easy for people to defend a product they love. The developer to user ratio for Linux Mint and Cinnamon is very out of balance, and this is a behind the scenes perspective that I don't think people would be able to observe anyway, since most of it happened on a private Slack.
bezier-curve··on Clement Lefebvre: The Man Behind Linux Mint (2013)
He still left up his attack piece, blatantly lying about a number of events that occurred. I don't think it's worthwhile to defend myself years later, but does this sounds like the tone of a professional? This is one of many poor messages he's been sending about former staff, along with several Github comments:

https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/bzbomd/comment/e...

I'm not the first person they have ostracized. I have seen other anonymous post-mortems describing experiences similar to mine from earlier time periods. I did so much work for them, it still feels unreal that someone could be that vindictive.

Perhaps this belongs on a Glassdoor equivalent for FOSS projects, but since one doesn't exist and this thread appeared in my feed, I think it's important I'm able to voice my perspective since he tried to assassinate my character.

bezier-curve··on Clement Lefebvre: The Man Behind Linux Mint (2013)
I worked with Clement between 2017-2019. I invested a significant amount of time getting their mutter fork caught up, and there was a fallout resulting from all the work being reverted at the last minute before the next release.

I'm still bitter about this, and I think this experience has been traumatic. On their private Slack workspace they harassed me, later banned me from their Github organization, used social media to defame me, and continued to attack me in Github issues for some time afterwards.

During this time I also got a job with a reference from Clement praising me, but was later laid off after he wrote a blog post attacking me while being increasingly harassed in private by various Linux Mint team members. I wish I still had that reference email I let him send directly to my previous boss, so people could see how quickly he will turn on people within a three month time period.

Needless to say this has spoiled my appetite for being an open source contributor. Maybe I will eventually find a project that interests me, but every time I try to get back into the Linux desktop userland these experiences come back to haunt me.

Edit: It seems people want proof, but all I can show is a public figure who has done irreparable damage to the way I look at FOSS.

bezier-curve··on Hacker News Guidelines
The problem at least for Reddit is consistency and quality of moderation. Moderators will play favorites, and they'll spitefully punish people they don't like. There's no rules on Reddit - paid moderation is the fundamental difference with HN.
