bevan··on Ask HN: Who is the most positive impactful person you know?
For anyone not familiar with EA or Will MacAskill, I highly recommend these podcasts:

Tim Ferriss: https://tim.blog/2015/11/22/will-macaskill/

Sam Harris: https://samharris.org/podcasts/being-good-and-doing-good/

Joe Rogan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buyBzK5yM-s

bevan··on Show HN: Should I Send It? Helping you understand your mood in emails
Peepeth.com is experimenting with features like that. Currently, posts get a toxicity score from a Google API before they're even posted, and users are asked to confirm if it's above a certain threshold. Lots of false positives, but it seems to be reducing profanity.

Disclaimer: I'm the founder.

bevan··on Show HN: Copy tweets to Bitcoin's blockchain for $9
Peepeth.com lets you "Peep" on the Ethereum blockchain for much less. Disclaimer: I am the creator.
bevan··on Peepeth: Unstoppable Microblogging
Good question. With Mastodon, there is no central data store. So if your chosen front-end goes down (which hosts your content), you're out of luck. I think they're working on that problem though.
bevan··on Peepeth: Unstoppable Microblogging
Thanks!

1) Yeah, it's a weird word. Other suggestions appreciated. 2) Good feedback. 3) Branding is a top priority. This front-end is meant to polarize for a certain type of user. That becomes more clear during on-ramp and usage. Copy/messaging needs work. Suggestions appreciated. 4) Thank you. Best way is to DM me on Twitter at @bevanbarton with the email address you signed up with and I'll approve you ASAP.

Haha, good eye. Don't tell Fred! :)

Yes, Peepeth users are aware that unless an account is Twitter-verified (with a Twitter icon next to their name), the user is not guaranteed to be the "real" user. Other verifications like domain ownership are coming soon.

bevan··on Peepeth: Unstoppable Microblogging
Thanks Grace. Yes, that's part of it. Also, content isn't controlled by a company (it's immutable on the blockchain).
bevan··on Peepeth: Unstoppable Microblogging
The name jokes are many and hilarious, making a page on the site for that :)
bevan··on Peepeth: Unstoppable Microblogging
Thank you.

Currently there's Twitter account verification (through a blockchain oracle contract). More verification options are on the way (incl. domain ownership).

bevan··on Peepeth: Unstoppable Microblogging
Thank you! All suggestions appreciated.

Good question. It's nice to be able to receive payments without relying on a company. Even if Peepeth.com goes down, you could still be in business on other front-ends (back-end data is open, anyone can build competing front-ends).
bevan··on Peepeth: Unstoppable Microblogging
Front-ends like peepeth.com are censorable. Illegal content will be removed from the peepeth.com front-end.

I think its criminal appeal is limited compared to alternatives. Use of a known and traceable payment+communications channel reveals more info about the perpetrators and their networks than non-crypto communication channels + crypto payments. Pairing communication and money removes a level of anonymity because of the traceable nature of blockchain transactions.

bevan··on Pineapple Fund: Donating $86M of Bitcoins to Charity
Dear Rich Pineapple:

Congrats on your huge BTC surplus!

To make the biggest difference, consider looking into Effective Altruism[1] (an idea, not a charity) if you haven't already. Their motto is “using reason and evidence to do the most good”.

Perhaps do away with the charity proposal form, and instead choose one or several of the most effective charities as ranked by GiveWell.org[2] (who do rigorous effectiveness analysis). OpenPhilanthropy[3] is a charity that takes the EA perspective.

Unfortunately, seemingly worthy charities are often orders of magnitude less effective than the few most effective causes. Charity evaluators like GiveWell help us find the gems that can leverage our money many times more effectively.

For more info about Effective Altruism, listen to Tim Ferriss[4] and Sam Harris[5] interview the co-founder of Effective Altruism, check out this NYT piece[6], or read Doing Good Better[7].

bevan··on Ask HN: Would you want to sell code of complete websites?
There could be a market amongst those learning the given tech stack. I would have definitely considered buying well-built apps to study back in the day.
bevan··on Show HN: Burn the Boats – A free goal-setting platform based on research
Hi HN, I'm the founder of BurnTheBoats.org.

Burn The Boats is a free service that lets you create irrevocable social pre-commitments. After committing to a goal on the site and providing your friends' email addresses, Burn The Boats will email them on your deadline. The only way to stop that email is to pay a cancellation fee, whose amount you choose when you set your goal.

Unlike other goal-setting platforms, Burn The Boats doesn't email your friends right away and encourages you to keep your goal to yourself. This is because research shows that sharing your goal can make you less likely to achieve it (which was the topic of one of Derek Sivers' Ted Talks [1]). By only divulging your goal to your friends on the due date, Burn The Boats gives you the benefits of social accountability without the motivation-sapping effects of sharing your goal immediately.

I'd appreciate your feedback on any aspect of the site (concept, design, copy, etc...). Thanks for reading!

Cheers! Bevan

ps. I've vlogged the process of building the app, which you can see here: https://burntheboats.org/story

bevan··on Ask HN: What is your take on being a better writer?
Read the first few chapters of On Writing Well.

Omit needless words. There's a page in Stephen King's autobiography "On Writing" where he shows an editor's comments on an article he wrote as a teenager. Half of the words are crossed out. Remembering that example improved my writing significantly.

Also, understand that writing is an iterative process. It can take 5-6 passes to craft a good sentence.

bevan··on Ask HN: How can I do social good through programming?
Work on what pays the highest and then donate that money to the most effective charity. According to GiveWell.org, that charity is currently the Against Malaria Foundation, which will statistically save a life for every $3500 it receives going forward. It is ridiculously cheap to save a life that would otherwise not be saved. I highly recommend Sam Harris' interview with Will Macaskill on this topic (effective altruism).

bevan··on Ask HN: What do you use to align your daily todos with your long term goals?
I've added a data export feature for journals, habits, and pomodoro sessions.
bevan··on Ask HN: What do you use to align your daily todos with your long term goals?
Not yet, but an export feature is on my list. I launched it recently- any feedback much appreciated.
bevan··on Show HN: Stay focused on your top 1-year goal (web app and browser extension)
Hi everyone,

I made this site to keep me focused and productive towards my top goal. Maybe you'll benefit from it too.

What it does: Focal Point helps you pick your top 1-year goal and shows it to you in every new browser tab (showing # of days left). It also reminds you to record your progress towards that goal daily, and to track your goal-related habits. You can see a graph of your progress, along with a regression line showing whether your progress is speeding up or slowing down.

There's also a suite of productivity tools that I use daily. Here is the full list:

-Pomodoro Timer (Provide a session goal, rate your sessions, and track your stats.)

-Habit Maker (Check off your habit each day.)

-Progress Journal (Review each day and brainstorm ways to improve.)

-Browser extension with reminders and daily quotes

-Brainstorm tool

-Reminders (Emails and browser prompts)

To see what it looks like in action, go here: https://focal.pt/demo

Feedback much appreciated.

Want to use it but can't afford the ten bucks per month? Let me know.

Cheers, Bevan

bevan··on Ask HN: What do you use to align your daily todos with your long term goals?
I made a web app exactly for this- for staying focused on your most important 1-year goal. It reminds you of your goal in every new browser tab (with the accompanying browser extension), so that your goal always stays top-of-mind. It also reminds you to record your daily progress and to track your goal-related habits.

It has other productivity tools as well (pomodoro timer; habit tracker; brainstorm tool) all dedicated to your top 1-year goal.

It's called Focal Point (https://focal.pt), check out a demo dashboard here: https://focal.pt/demo

bevan··on Create systems that make it easy for you to succeed
The weakest link in most goal systems is ourselves. Changing behavior is incredibly difficult because we get sidetracked, forget, and rationalize our failures. A good system should not rely on our memory or willpower to keep our goal top-of-mind.

So putting it up on Trello is a good idea, as is any other way to ensure your system stays in focus, especially for the first 45-60 days. I built an app for that purpose. It makes it easy to consistently do the small things that lead to results (reviewing your goal; assessing your progress; tracking habits; doing deep work; brainstorming), by reminding you via a browser extension. Check out Focal Point (focal.pt).

bevan··on Like Airbnb, but for algorithms?
I think there's a sizeable market for tailored code solutions that "volunteers" wouldn't help out with. The bounty model can be more efficient / less cumbersome than Elance for a set of problems.

A lot of people had this comment about Bountify.co; check it out to see what kinds of code bounties people post.

bevan··on Eggs Not Always What They're Cracked Up to Be
The evidence appears to be in about "omega-3 eggs". There are quite a few studies showing the benefits of eating them over conventional eggs:

http://paleoclaims.com/claims/omega-3-eggs-are-healthier-tha...

A quote from one of the studies on that page:

"Three n-3 PUFA-enriched eggs provide approximately the same amount of n-3 PUFA as one meal with fish.""
