betterThanTexas··on Mistral ships le chat – enterprise AI assistant that can run on prem
I would take any such claim with a heavy rock of salt because the usefulness of AI is going to vary drastically with the sort of work you're tasked with producing.
betterThanTexas··on Getting Older Isn't What You Think
Well, if you've devoted a significant part of your life to neurotically analyzing your own actions in order to comply with a certain set of values, changing one of those values will naturally imply reevaluating of much of your life. I think realistic expectations of yourself for not living up to your own values is important to maintain basic resilience.

Not to mention, we all have behavior that's fundamentally contradictory to our values. At least, IMO.

To what extent does Haxe still align with modern Javascript? Is modern javascript even considered to be the basis of actionscript anymore?

Good luck.

> under ideal conditions.

I interpreted the claim as being under non-ideal conditions (which is fair, frankly—it's well-known that the visual and sound quality is better at the beginning of a run than at the end, and film quality doesn't matter if your local theater doesn't ensure it's preserved as best it can be).

Plus, I saw a film viewing of Sinners this past weekend (quite a fun movie, highly recommend it) and some visual artifacts were very noticeable—it was regular enough I figured there was a slice of the film roll that got damaged somehow.

Which part is the antecedent of "that" here? I made three distinct claims. Happy to explain more if you clue me in to what doesn't make sense.

> Getting junk mail from the AARP made me feel old.

Not only have I been getting AARP mail since I was 25, but you can actually join at any age. It's worth considering even for the relatively youthful.

betterThanTexas··on CLion Is Now Free for Non-Commercial Use
Seems to work fine for me, I haven't noticed it getting in my way any more than any other assistant.

Doesn't sound very healthy, tbh. Also takes an extraordinary amount of courage to be that confident in your own assuredly-flawed judgement. All it takes is one person changing your mind to ruin your life.

HD is lower quality than film. Maybe this is true for home entertainment, but we take less advantage of darkness than ever from my perspective. It's the video-game CGI that kills me.

I don't think you can call should discipline if it implies a dependence on industry. What concerns me is how people will behave when industry leaves our lives.
betterThanTexas··on Scientists have found a way to 'tattoo' tardigrades
Presumably it's at least worth considering if such a pessimistic attitude is warranted. Such a slow oxidation rate is certainly not warranted on a chemical process level. The trick is performing this chemical process 1.5 AU away.

Someone else's lack of discipline has a far more negative effect on my life than their obesity does. So I reject this choice entirely—I'd rather we stop looking for easy fixes to hard problems.

I don't judge people for taking ozempic, but I am absolutely confused why people see this as a massive win for society. We're just doubling down on our dysfunction.

betterThanTexas··on FTC rule on unfair or deceptive fees to take effect on May 12
Ok, so why is the government endorsing hidden fees for fungible products? There is no situation where this benefits anyone but shareholders.
betterThanTexas··on An appeal to Apple from Anukari
Formal in what sense? There's certainly no set form for discussion outside of threading. But there's certainly no assumption of persuasion or sense of shared goals or values.
betterThanTexas··on An appeal to Apple from Anukari
People complaining about whataboutism are more obstinately committed to avoiding decent conversation than the people who commit it. This ain’t a formal debate.

> it is much wiser to hire one senior instead of 2 juniors for the same money.

Maybe in terms of pure productivity, but if you can match hiring to roadmaps you can give them more approachable/further from revenue work for which seniors would be an overkill. Etc. I'm just saying anyone with a simple explanation is only telling you part of the story.

Besides, hiring is expensive. If you say live near a university, you have an edge in finding talent.

That's actually pretty interesting insight into painting (to me, anyway).

You could just as easily filter by having a github repo. It doesn't even need to be active or very full. Hell, that would also filter out a lot of people with college degrees! Might even save you time.

In my experience, only very large and bureaucratic institutions (governments, schools) really demand degrees and certifications.

I'm not saying a college CAN'T provide an education, but it IS a little ridiculous you can't just test pass four years of regurgitating textbooks. Ideally for a fraction of the cost.
betterThanTexas··on You can't git clone a team
...this doesn't make sense. Surely you need to factor in price point. Often times junior engineers deliver disproportionate value. Some ratio of juniors:seniors just seems rational, and those juniors grow into seniors.

Maybe there's a good argument against training, but it could also just be irrational and stubborn in this case.

betterThanTexas··on Show HN: My AI Native Resume
I'm just confused what you think a chatbot is where it would do anything but complicate this process. It's a lot easier to confuse a recruiter than it is to go on dates.

> It has value because a student can only get it by learning and problem-solving.

No, it has value because it gatekeeps class mobility. Degrees haven't signified learning or problem solving longer than I've been alive. The attitude is that if you pay for an education, you're entitled to a degree. The education aspect is optional.

betterThanTexas··on Urtext: The Python plaintext library for people who've tried everything else
> Plain text: text without mark-up

What is the utility of such a definition? As far as I am concerned, anything I can read with my editor is plain text. That definition is trivially useful on a daily basis. I don't see any point in calling markdown something other than plain text. Because it's just plain text.

And of course, I intend deep disrespect that you had the gall to claim correctness for such obviously arbitrary definitions.
