As a human, I have a natural right to take inspiration from content, use facts I learn from books, concepts from art, jokes from movies, etc.
Don't see why using a machine to augment/extend this capability is any different
Point is - using your dryer does not actually cause human suffering. This is a simply a utilitarian argument with an incomplete picture, the structure of which is often utilized to promote atrocities like communism, genocide, etc.
It’s just not a great argument, and doesn't consider the opposition argument - the human rights benefits (for people fleeing war zones, in predatory monetary regimes, etc.) are worth the electricity usage – because people/the market are valuing it that way.
Dryers are unnecessary - we could airdry all of our clothes, but we value the convenience it brings. The value that bitcoin brings in terms of human rights is much greater than the convenience of dryers, yet we hear nothing about "banning dryers" or "dryers killing people".
Or even Restic directly: https://docs.storj.io/dcs/how-tos/backup-with-restic/
Bitcoin could be used by the whole world with mining only happening on a laptop. That would not change anything for Bitcoin users.
We were paying $100,000 a month storing user-generated content, and now are paying about $10,000 a month after migrating
Another example –> the total cost for me is more than 10x cheaper than AWS - its 7$ for TB/Bandwidth vs $90 on AWS. I can also get 1.8gbps - in my region, which is even faster than AWS, and it doesn't rely on ACL databases (it uses client-side hmacs for file authorization). So, for my use case (static content storage and low-volume CDN usage) decentralized cloud wins. (it's 10x cheaper, faster, and more secure for my needs).
