Telecom eng., but you will downvote anyway. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peering List of truisms you believe and thus want to downvote me: 0) ISPs charge both ends 1) ISPs intentionally make your tube, flix, etc experience miserable 3) Everything should be 'unlimited' 4) Bandwidth is basically free

betaby··on Treachery in the Rodin Museum 3D scan verdict
> Their tax system is required to be defined and expressed algorithmically, and they even built a programming language and compiler tool chain to do this.

That's a very interesting fact. Especially in the context of the recent news of the 50 billion euros deficit https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/24/france-budget-debt-deficit-g...

If their taxes are defined mathematically I would not expect constant mishaps with the budget.

If those countries worried for real they would have built open platforms themselves. In reality they are making running any social platform next to impossible operate legaly.

> Can't we just ban Facebook everywhere?

That's not that EU asks. EU asks to have a direct interface to delete posts EU elites don't like.

betaby··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
This thread is quicky suggests that Brazil should just ban Twitter/FB/What'sUp. And as matter of fact Brazil did that couple of times. As for today Brazil orders ISPs to block ~15k sites. Mostly gambling. However plenty of sites in the lists are political in nature.

Another argument, that blocking is not doing any good to the citizens. See Russia where FB/Linkedin and many other sites are blocked. That's not helping democracy at all.

But the most important sad realization that besides the USA there is NO other country where one can host and run even slightly popular forum site. Even forum related to stamps or railway models. The regulatory burden and the harassment from government agencies makes the exercise impossible to execute. HN front page had a plenty of examples of the niche forums/sites shutting down in UK/Germany because of the regulatory risks.

Think for a second, Brazilian candidate complains that the private USA company blocked him. Bu the problem is that Brazilian elites made Internet regulations so hostile that there is absolutely no open platforms do discuss political mattes there, thus even those elites have to rely on US-based platform. And they do, with all that hipocricy, i.e. advertise there then in benefits them, ban quickly once not.

betaby··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
Intel was seling 386 CPU up until 2007. I personally was using brand new special equipment with 386 soldered to custom MBs with no VGA, serial only access. I suppose you can purchase such boards from ebay/recyclers today.
betaby··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
That's interesting. That means there are fewer checks for hardware than software?

betaby··on France reaches 94.9% fiber coverage in 2026
> cable can get up to 1Gbps, and probably higher, so it's a distinction without a difference.

Heavily disagree. There is a distinction with a big difference. Currently deployed by Videotron cable solution is 940Mbps down and only 50Mbps up. That's an abysmal upload speed.

Of course Videotron is aware that cable is dead end. (even though they still building it on subsidies). That's why Videotron is offering to switch to Bell's fiber in some locations.

betaby··on France reaches 94.9% fiber coverage in 2026
`high-speed internet` is not necessary a fiber though. As recent as 2025 Videotron had been receiving subsidies to build cable network in a newly constructed neighborhood.
betaby··on France's top court blocks social media ban for under-15s
Tobacco and alcohol are scientifically proven carcinogens, yet they are sold ubiquitously in the [western] world. I would argue they are more dangerous than social medias. Yet we don't see any push in banning tobacco and alcohol for 'everyone'.

betaby··on GitHub Actions and Pages are experiencing degraded availability
Beside the NT4 servers we had SunOS 5.x and Digital UNIX (later upgraded to Tru64 UNIX). Yes, from sysadmin point of view they were way more consistent performance wise and less problematic to operate in general. BSDs were not 'approved' but nonetheless we were running DNS and some other internet facing stuff on OpenBSD 2.x if I remember correctly.

> They definitely managed to create a lot of reliable products. > Windows NT was one of them.

Disagree. I was admining NT4.0 boxes back then and it was

1. very slow

2. constantly leaking that required weekly scheduled reboots

3. security wise it was nightmare even by that times standard

betaby··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
I have no say in this process. Of course taxes are based on land and building assessed cost. Montreal and suburbs chose to assess condos at a market rate and even higher, while to assess detached house way below the market and assess data centers below the costs it was recently resold.
betaby··on Degrees of Wealth
> The reason why nannies are affordable in China is because those nannies aren't paid very much, and consequently enjoy a much lower standard of living than their employers. In Netherlands, nannies are relatively expensive, but you the employee is much closer to the socioeconomic stratum to that of their employer.

In Canada there are people making peanuts and living very poorly while technically inequality is low. The problem in Canada and other developed countries is excessive taxation of salaries. That's an orthogonal to wealth problem.

betaby··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
> Property Tax revenue

Property Tax revenue is surprisingly tiny from data centers in Quebec. Some how DCs have low assessment for the building, like way lower then their resale value even.

> they are not a drain on services like schools, roads, fire department, police department etc.

Police - definitely not.

Roads on other hand, DCs are hauling new equipment / decommissioned equipment daily.

I'm in fact in favor of DCs, but tax revenue from them is not impressive at all. At least in Quebec.

Indeed. I live in Canada and while USMCA benefited some industries it did not others. Also as a Canadian I suspect the new agreement most likely will be even less beneficial to Canadians.
betaby··on EU Court of Justice allows criminal prosecution for reposting RT videos
https://curia.europa.eu/site/upload/docs/application/pdf/202...

"The Court replied that it is irrelevant whether or not the broadcasting of the prohibited content takes place in the course of an economic activity. The concept of ‘operator’ covers, in the present context, any person responsible, directly or indirectly, for making the prohibited content available, including in the context of a non-remunerated activity or in the operation of a website financed by voluntary contributions from third parties. The Court also clarifies that that classification depends neither on the extent nor on the duration of the broadcasting "
