besus··on US Govt is upselling AWS as a PaaS?
The pricing chart just doesn't even begin to make sense. What is this? Do any of you have experience with it?
besus··on Why Ruby on Rails still matters
Fark
besus··on Show HN: Foosbar – My autonomous foosball-playing robot
That sounds a lot more fun than AWS DeepRacer.

+1 - Yes please

besus··on New Catan – New Energies
It reminds me of how Civilization has global warming and pollution penalties. I can't wait to play it.
besus··on Show HN: Quickwit – OSS Alternative to Elasticsearch, Splunk, Datadog
That license is not FOSS. Users beware of the impending subscription costs to come.
besus··on AWS AI everything show continues: Generate SQL from text, vector search, more
Hopefully this is all performing better than CodeWhisperer. That AI is a slag pile compared to GitHub CoPilot.

Bad suggestions. Poor user experience.

My dev team rejected it pretty quickly, and absolutely loves CoPilot.

YMMV of course.

besus··on Disney Mocked for Ludicrously Fake CGI "Actors" in Crowd Scene
Yeah, just think of how the battle scene at Helm's Deep would look if they weren't able to use CGI. AI generated CGI is just the next step forward.

Write and produce good content and we'll watch, subscribe, and buy.

besus··on Decoupling a core service from your monolith the right way
A very pragmatic use of SOA / microservice.
besus··on Has HN Changed? I assume it's just me
I do believe the frontpage has lost some of it's magic over the years. But the 'new' pages still have plenty of interesting topics that don't get the upvotes.
besus··on Ask HN: What’s your startup’s analytics setup? (2023)
Matomo for web facing pieces, and OpenSearch for API.
besus··on Solein – Protein out of thin air
Old news... Charlton Heston already figured out the secret years ago!

besus··on Ask HN: Have You Left Kubernetes?
Sort of.....

I went from on-metal K8s clusters, which were a complete PITA and required a full team to manage, to using EKS which has been everything K8s should be... easy peasy.

besus··on Sitting and standing at work (2015)
Two companies ago I had a wonderful koi pond outside the office around which my 1:1 and I would walk around and enjoy the tranquility. It was great and I very much miss it.
besus··on Toxic Positivity
I spent several years at a SaaS which was plagued with toxic positivity. The underpinning platform was slapdash and took 4x the expected time to add features because of it. Yet the GM walked around trumpeting that we were fielding a best in class offering.

Any mention of the reality of the situation was met with replies about not being a team player and showing negativity. It was an absolute morale killer for the development and SRE teams charged with on-call rotations which resulted in exhaustion and frequent outages.

Start-up code is often naive and hastily put together. Growth pains are expected as customer count and revenue increase. Don't bullshit the situation with false positivity. Address the issues and live to fight another day.

In the end, that SaaS has slowly faded away to obsolescence due to the lack of honesty about the actual state of the union.

besus··on GoDaddy Cert and Chrome Update = Net:Err_certificate_transparency_required
They switched over to Let's Encrypt for their cert.
besus··on GoDaddy Cert and Chrome Update = Net:Err_certificate_transparency_required
Same here. SSL checks out clean. Safari, Firefox, and older Chrome work just fine.

Way to go Google. My customers are livid and evidently getting auto-updated throughout the day.

besus··on Amazon lied about using seller data, lawmakers say, urging DOJ investigation
A quick bit of browsing the Amazon Basics line of products would certainly lead one to assume they had totally knocked off the 3rd party products they thought they could without getting major brand pushback.
besus··on Ask HN: Is Signal still a good app to use for encrypted messaging?
Wickr is another alternative with really tight security throughout it's app to stack.
besus··on Folding-markdown: Adds header folding for Markdown files in Atom
That momentum with VSCode is my concern. Will it just become a bloated, slow, resource pig that Visual Studio has been for years now?

Long live Atom!

besus··on Umbra: an ACID-compliant database built for in-memory analytics speed
Checkout CockroachDB if you want to have the 'add a node' for additional storage option like MongoDB has. It's Postgres compliant, for the most part, and has a license that most of us can live with for the projects we build.
besus··on Troubles with the AWS web console
The AWS console is a thousand times better than the nightmare one in Azure.
