bestouff··on Corporate America Has Suddenly Decided to Stop Blowing Money on AI
Nowadays I don't understand why you wouldn't use a (more-or-less) nearby hosted Chinese model. You have the security, you have roughly the same performance, and you have an order of magnitude more bang for your buck. Bonus point : the models aren't censored and won't refuse to answer in the middle of your coding session.
bestouff··on ECHR confirms ethical veganism is a protected philosophical belief
Yeah sure. The world is full of (working) right-wing propaganda. People with "differences" (be it skin color or food taste) won't be catered for. So veganism will probably falter like DEI or other progressive initiatives.

But right now I don't think it's the case yet in the UK.

bestouff··on ECHR confirms ethical veganism is a protected philosophical belief
It's been there for decades.
bestouff··on Trump Media to sell instant access to 'market-moving' social posts
30 to 100 maybe
bestouff··on TS-2026-009: Insecure argument handling in Tailscale SSH permitted root access
Agreed.
bestouff··on TS-2026-009: Insecure argument handling in Tailscale SSH permitted root access
If it used one of the standard arguments-handling crates (e.g. "clap") there's no way it can happen.
bestouff··on IBM is on pace for its worst day ever
Wow ... CNN is definitively not left-leaning. It fully buys into the capitalist ideal. It's more like neoliberal. That's not what I had in mind when I said "left".
bestouff··on IBM is on pace for its worst day ever
Are there significant left-leaning major news orgs in the US (genuine question) ?
bestouff··on Former NOAA employees built Climate.us to preserve climate data and resources
Private companies care way more about making money.
bestouff··on Former NOAA employees built Climate.us to preserve climate data and resources
Doing it privately is a sure recipe for ending with sponsored, biased data.
bestouff··on The Graph That Should Be Front-Page News
> Each blue line represents a different year since 1982. The red line is this year. It doesn't just set a new record. It has departed entirely from the range of previous observations.
bestouff··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
I think only the US consider the US Democrats as leftists.
bestouff··on Gun Mistakes in Fiction Writing: Handgun Edition
You know how to recognize an American movie ? There's a gun on the poster.
bestouff··on The end of my AArch64 desktop experiment
(S)he has a point. Sometimes the vendor dtb is all you have.
bestouff··on American Pride Falls to 25-Year Record Low
Hey, I understand you're appalled by the political landscape at home. But losing the will to live is too much, way too much.

Find a shrink, talk to someone. You're not well, don't let that go worse.

bestouff··on American Pride Falls to 25-Year Record Low
OK. But even then we don't do that here.
bestouff··on The end of my AArch64 desktop experiment
This is not completely true. You can use a generic kernel with a custom device tree.

The only problem is that distributions currently tend to package them together, but that shouldn't be obligatory.

bestouff··on You shouldn't copy-paste errors into Claude Code
Well ... there are work environments where this behavior is rewarded. However you do it, if you debug, solve the problem fast and put everything in production instantly, that's an instant gratification for the risk-taking engineer.

The other engineer who doesn't take shortcuts and does thing properly will be scolded (at best).

bestouff··on One million passports leaked online
This kind of behavior should be punished.
bestouff··on ICE Tracks Down Woman to Force Her to Delete Instagram Post
Would she win nowadays ?
bestouff··on US Supreme Court Just Blew Up EU-US Data Transfers
No more sharing of EU personal data with the US ? Not a bad thing.
bestouff··on Post-Mythos Cybersecurity: Keep calm and carry on
There are modern languages for that. Use Rust, don't loose your sleep over memory bugs.
bestouff··on European Commission's Metsola Overrides MEPs to Force Through Chat Control

bestouff··on Becoming a dad changes men's brains
That's how privacy-harming policies are so successful: "but think of the children !"
bestouff··on GLM 5.2 vs. Opus
The price of a small house.
bestouff··on Fossil Fuels Are 40% of Freight Shipping Tonnage, but Half Its Fuel Use
So 10% is a lot.
bestouff··on Excessive nil pointer checks in Go
You check and unpack once, then the rest of the "positive" codepath can use the reference without fearing null.

I fail to see how Rust would offer twice as many ways to shoot yourself in the foot ; this is a rather safe and picky language.

bestouff··on Gribouille 0.3.0: A Grammar of Graphics for Typst

bestouff··on The forge we deserve
I'm way more hopeful in a fully decentralized protocol like Forgefed* than some AT still-centralized thing.
