bestes··on Erik Naggum's XML Rant from 2002: Disturbingly prescient
I feel the same way, except it has been quite a while since I've read a good usenet-style rant, so I indulged.

The correctness of an idea vs the expression of the idea are not related. You can be "right" and horrible at explaining or "wrong" and very persuasive and eloquent.

The comparisons with comments from Linus are good examples. He can be very abrasive and condescending, but is usually right!

bestes··on The JOBS Act will very nearly legalize fraud in the stock market
Investors and founders have had to become more creative and seek other ways to exit ($$). Only a handful of companies have made it through the SOX morass. So, it does seem logical that they are better. But, to suggest SOX might have actually been positive? Like the TSA is positive because more people are learning to fly? (I don't know if this is true).
bestes··on Hotel Wifi JavaScript Injection
Maybe I am very naive, but how does unencrypted WiFi mean that anyone can do anything they like to me? Can they mess with my https, ssh or VPN connections? Can they inject content into regular HTTP pages?
bestes··on Google co-founder Sergey Brin spotted wearing Project Glass prototype IRL
These Google links have become worse than Flash for me. I would really rather just read the article and look at the pics and not have to "sign in" and everything that entails.
bestes··on I don't hire unlucky people
I dunno. Think about Steve Jobs recruiting for Mac engineers with a pirate flag flying from the building. If 'pirate' then == ninja/rockstar now, you might be missing a great job.
bestes··on A tale of new censors
bwarp, I find your stance ... distasteful. I have kids and I monitor them as appropriate. The idea that all Internet connections are now "age verified" is just getting the infrastructure in place for more serious censorship. And the idea that social workers need to deal with people like me is a pretty serious threat.
bestes··on Supreme Court rules 9-0 that warrant absolutely needed for police GPS tracking
I'm not sure what you mean exactly; could you please expand a bit?
bestes··on Visitor.js
$40/month? It's almost free! And, if $40 really is a big deal, I doubt you would bite at $20 or even $5; you would just do it yourself. Or, at least comfort yourself with the idea that you could.
bestes··on Richard Stallman Was Right All Along
How about printers that secretly record tracking info on each page you print? Or the code in PhotoShop that makes sure I can't scan money? We know about these now, but only because they were discovered. I'm not sure if it is even possible to buy a printer with out this "technology".

These are only examples: how about when we find that the government has not only been tracking us via our cellphones, but also activating the mic and activly collecting data? It just is not possible to "choose" not to be spied on, unless you know all the ways the spying is done.

bestes··on Oregon Blogger Isn't a Journalist, Court Imposes $2.5M Judgement
Is it illegal for a judge to think? If one side presents a really bad case, do they have to lose even if they are right?

I've experienced this myself, so maybe my comments should be thrown out as biased.

bestes··on The Rise of Developeronomics
These clean and crisp ideas are dangerous if you just repeat them (news stories, cocktail parties, management retreats), but not if you use them as a way to evaluate your other ideas, plans and so on. I do agree completly with how annoying these things get, like your long tail example, when repeated so often.
bestes··on The 57,000 Page Tax Return
Does this mean my MacBook would be tax free?! I could live without milk for the rest of my life, but not my computer.

Oh, and I love the way you slip in "lean" meats. Your own political agenda at work.

bestes··on How the Plummeting Price of Cocaine Fueled the Nationwide Drop in Violent Crime
Who are those people? Politicians? (serious question)
bestes··on It’s Not China; It’s Efficiency That Is Killing Our Jobs
Ignore an idea/essay/whatever because the author doesn't have a college degree in the area?
bestes··on Secret iOS business; what you don’t know about your apps
Isn't knowing and understanding what your users are doing with your app the cornerstone of making a better app?
bestes··on Apple’s Earnings Fall Below Street Expectations
Because it feels like irresponsible reporting.

Fine for the Wall Street Journal, I guess, since those readers know what it means.

I guess I should be happy if this is comparable to the "Apple is doomed!" stories that used to be in vogue.

bestes··on FSF: Campaign against windows 8 "secure boot"
Do you have any data to back this up? I've been tasked with getting rid of old computers before (at a large company) and it was a very painful process. Schools wouldn't take them. I can't even imagine trying to send them to another country! We ended up actually paying someone to haul many of them away.
bestes··on Mailgun API 2.0: forget MIME
I love the idea of using an HTTP POST to send email. I guess I'm the guy who has no idea how to use MIME, but find HTTP painless.

Plus, whenever I try and configure mail on a new system, especially an EC2 instance (or whatever) there are always lots of issues.

bestes··on One year old thinks magazine is a broken iPad
I think because "screens" are 2-D and little kids need to learn that things are 3-D. Also, screens don't have texture. Everything on a screen is artificial, which is fine once you understand what it is trying to represent, but not before.
bestes··on RAMCloud puts everything in DRAM
Did that thing ever actually ship?
bestes··on The Latest Crime Wave: Sending Your Child to a Better School
Don't forget that as a felony (before the Govenor intervene), she could no longer vote and loses many other rights. Basically not a citizen anymore.
bestes··on The Slashdot Effect from the Other Side
"Used to" for him/Slashdot would have been a loooong time ago.
bestes··on Speed-of-light experiments yield baffling result at LHC
Maybe not secret then, but to be released at a later date. Or released in one of those journals that most of cannot access.
bestes··on ~/.osx — a collection of sensible defaults for OS X Lion
When using Windows, one of my first troubleshooting steps is to reinstall the program. I (almost) never do that on the Mac. I'm guessing part of the reason is that Mac OS detects corrupt files before they are installed.
bestes··on Why designers don’t like A/B testing
Isn't "Discoverable" another way of saying this? It can and does work. It's fun to find a feature or learn how to do something new.

Examples: iPhone. No manual (probably there is now). It's unbelievable, really. But, you have to admit it works!

Anti-example: fire extinguisher. No tricky interface, please.

One reason I didn't see mentioned is user level. Beginners want/need simple. Later, they want more power. How do you keep the advanced features out of the way of the new users? Hide them! Advanced users will find them when they are ready.

bestes··on Space Shuttle Flight Deck
Flash required
bestes··on Why There Will Never be Another Da Vinci
I felt like every subject I took in school was like this. We started at the beginning of time, then worked through all the important people and discoveries, etc. But, never, did we reach the state-of-the-art. That was very discouraging.

When learning On my own, I simply start with today, the fill in history as necessary. I don't know FORTRAN or COBOL, for example. There are other examples where this is costing me, but I can't give those examples.

bestes··on HP Replaces Jon Rubinstein as Head of webOS
Palm didn't hire Rubinstein, he (as part of an investment group) bought Palm. He might not even want to work at HP.
bestes··on Bitcoin Miner does the math, calls it quits
The time and energy used to mine is what provides the security of bitcoins and transactions. I would not call it a waste; it is what enables bitcoin to exist as a currency.

Another way to think about it is to imagine that each of these GPU rigs is like a branch office of the Fed. (yes, I'm kind of joking here)

bestes··on The FBI stole an Instapaper server in an unrelated raid
I think the OP was unreasonably harsh on DigitalOne (never heard of them let alone have any interests). It is very possible that they are consumed with FBI questioning, gag orders or who knows what else. I would give them a pass for a few days until more detail comes out.
