berniedurfee··on Meduza co-founder's phone infected with Pegasus
At some point in the near future “phone” will be replaced with “car” in the title and the outcome will be more tragic.

What’s a Tesla 0-day worth I wonder?

berniedurfee··on Japan launches rocket carrying lunar lander and X-ray telescope
That’s pretty much my standard landing method in Kerbal.

Descend vertically to keep from having to worry about balancing a bunch of thrusters.

Then, tip over, hopefully in the right orientation and gently enough to not blow up.

berniedurfee··on How could the early Unix OS comprise so few lines of code?
I think the “never look back” mindset of product growth is a major driver of code bloat.

Rarely are engineering teams allowed time to go back and refine and optimize legacy code, until it’s a blazing dumpster fire… and even then.

Products never seem to have enough features, so engineering teams plow forward. When a component absolutely needs a rewrite, the rewrite is often implemented with the same haste as the original.

Given the time, I think every engineer could easily factor out vast swaths of code and refine what’s left to be much leaner.

I feel like the same goes for programming languages and platforms. Most devs would prefer to spend their time adding new capabilities rather than optimizing a few lines of code out of existing ones.

But then again “Perfect is the enemy of good” and “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” and “We’ve got 731 items on the roadmap, so let’s go!”

berniedurfee··on Privacy Nightmare on Wheels’: Every Car Brand Reviewed by Mozilla
I hope you’re just trolling, I’ll bite.

Privacy is not about what someone _might_ do with your data, it’s what they _can_ do with your data.

It’s also that they have your data, which means it can be exposed to staff or the world as the result of a breach.

berniedurfee··on Spaghetti plot of Hurricane Lee track as of 0000UTC 07 Sept 2023
It looks like it’s almost certainly going to track up along the coast, but won’t make landfall on mainland US?

How often are all the models wrong this far out?

berniedurfee··on Molly Holzschlag has died
I’d transition to worse and more expensive healthcare if that’s what it takes to get to healthcare for everyone.

The transition will be painful for many who have good employer provided healthcare, but at least then we’ll have a somewhat unified voice demanding better care at better costs.

Every politician would be beholden to every voter on healthcare issues during every election.

berniedurfee··on Molly Holzschlag has died
Bootstraps and all that…
berniedurfee··on Pesticide safety limit for salmon farms watered down after industry lobbying
I don’t think it’s as evil as it is myopic. This story is specifically about ignoring long term effects to an entire ecosystem to sustain operations that are apparently not sustainable without sacrificing an entire ecosystem in the long term.

Industrialization is nearly always the practice of punting long term issues to another part of the world or to another generation.

I would assert that most industrialists are looking to maximize profit through economies of scale with little to no concern for sustainability. That’s how it started and I think that’s how it ends.

So, I guess maybe being myopic at scale is evil.

2007 - Apple releases the iPhone and begins the age of the gilded cage of mobile devices.
berniedurfee··on IBM promised to back off facial recognition, then signed a $70M contract for it
I’d be mad rich if not for my stinkin’ conscience. Doing evil is where all the money is, always has been. I need a pill so I can quite my conscience and get on with getting rich.

Nature knows no morals, so I guess acting without morals is a more natural state, thus provides fewer constraints.

Morals and ethics are purely human constructs, thus to follow your conscience is to be more human and less inhumane. That makes me feel good. Maybe we need a pill to improve one’s ability to hear their conscience.

berniedurfee··on Modern genetic data suggests pre-humans were a group of only 1,280 individuals
I wonder if it was 1280 in one community or split across several disparate and possibly warring groups.

I suppose competition from other hominid species might have pushed one community to band together for survival.

I just can’t imagine one community of any size surviving for very long without carving up territory and battling for scarce resources or hoarding to create artificial resource scarcity.

We’re such a fractured and combative species. If we were down to 1280 today I think we’d still figure out how to fight each other.

berniedurfee··on Social media decline: Users are shifting to messaging apps and group chats
That’s the thing I appreciate _most_ about HN. The focus is on shop talk. Discuss science, tech, philosophy and other interesting topics without a constant stream of nonsense.

I find it very difficult to not reply on HN with a quick joke or pun or flame with no substance, but I don’t, usually.

I really like the high S/N ratio. It’s why I come here every day.

berniedurfee··on The Terraform Registry Terms of Service have been updated
Not to mention the number of community contributions is going to plummet.

At some point third party and independent module and provider developers will need to decide whether to cross-support both tools.

I don’t think Hashi is going to go out of their way to make life easy for Terrafork. Cross-compatibility won’t last long.

berniedurfee··on The Terraform Registry Terms of Service have been updated
Very petty. I’ve been a longtime advocate and evangelist for Hashicorp products, but jeez.

I felt they were ‘one of the good ones’ making great tech just to make great tech. Success and profit followed making great tech.

How the mighty have fallen. Long live Terrafork I guess. Hashifork all their other stuff too I suppose. Very disappointing.

berniedurfee··on High-Speed AI Drone Overtakes World-Champion Drone Racers
Although, I have a wild fantasy that someone will build fleets of drones that’ll take to a battlefield with the sole purpose of stopping a conflict.

Buzzing around, disabling vehicles, grabbing weapons and ammo, plugging up artillery barrels, flashing lights in combatants eyes, softly playing contemporary adult jazz… basically making it impossible for the two sides to fight.

Peacenik Bots, premiering on Netflix next year.

berniedurfee··on High-Speed AI Drone Overtakes World-Champion Drone Racers

berniedurfee··on AI Crap
I agree with the sentiment overall.

There will absolutely be some great benefits provided by LLMs and the like. Alexa type devices that are more useful than a light switch. Auto spelling correction that actually works most of the time. Maybe a microwave oven that just has one ‘Heat this up’ button.

But I think the beneficial use cases will be a fraction of the overall use cases.

These technologies are going to be far more effective at enshitifying our world. Spam, scams, replacing artists and knowledge workers with tools that can produce ‘good enough’ output… and yeah, military capabilities that’ll allow humans to kill more humans more cost effectively.

I’m looking forward to the good stuff, it’ll be neat. But absolutely dreading the wave of horribleness that’ll inevitably come of this.

berniedurfee··on Ask HN: What's happening with remote work? Why they want workers back to office?
This is definitely one driver. Most municipal tax incentives for companies with offices in an area require butts in seats.

The tax incentives diminish when seats are empty and there are sometimes thresholds that must be maintained per year or all the incentives vanish.

berniedurfee··on Scrum is a cancer
Lol, I was on a team that was required to stand during standups, even though we all sat together and could just swivel our chairs around.

One dev flat out refused to stand. I can still see the pulsing vein on the neck of the project manager who so wanted to scream ‘You will stand during the standup dammit!’

berniedurfee··on New study finds microplastics infiltrate all systems of body, alter behaviour
I’ve been saying it for a while now and am unfortunately feeling more confident.

Microplastics are the next lead emissions style issue that’ll end up being linked to widespread socio-behavioral decline and health issues.

Except it’ll be worse due to the far more prevalent and widespread use of plastics. It’ll be as if we used lead to make _everything_ and then found out lead is bad.

berniedurfee··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
I use a chrome extension or app to switch DNS to something like 1.1.1.1 when a site I need can’t handle blocked DNS calls.
berniedurfee··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
I’ve been using NextDNS for a few years now. I don’t have time to mess with an ‘on prem’ solution.

It works really well and is simple to manage. It runs on my mobile devices easily.

I turn it off occasionally to shop, but immediately turn it back on as the internet is a whole different place without some sort of robust ad blocking.

It’s nice to see the logs fill up with blocked telemetry and other crap all day.

berniedurfee··on Cash payments above €3000 to be outlawed in Netherlands
Thanks for the response. I wonder what the intent is.

I can see a merchant not wanting to pay the credit card transaction fee if the purchase is so low as to make the sale a wash or worse.

I just wonder if the $10 limit is throwing the dog a bone and small merchants really want/need a higher minimum to protect their margins.

Seems like not allowing merchants to decide how they accept payments is an overreach by the government.

berniedurfee··on Cash payments above €3000 to be outlawed in Netherlands
I believe it’s illegal to put a minimum sale price on credit card transactions in NY. Though I still see it frequently in NYC.
