berniedurfee··on Secret Hand Gestures in Paintings (2019)
Yep. If I just naturally lay my hand down on something, my middle and ring fingers do tend to naturally come together.

It takes a tiny bit of intent to splay my fingers out.

Portrait artists constantly study people very closely and are likely attuned to thousands of little nuanced details that go unnoticed by most people. This is probably one.

Now I’m going to start looking at people’s hands to check their finger positions. That might have been a good exercise for the authors of the paper to determine if this is a natural hand position.

Would it be legal to just “clone” Photoshop or Lightroom as a FOSS project?

I mean create a nearly exact clone. Everything down to the layout, tools, menus, options, etc.

Who would Adobe sue? Could they make it illegal to distribute?

berniedurfee··on Cancel Adobe if you are a creative under NDA with your clients
Same with Lightroom. I still use v4 and it’s still better than anything else available today.

I try all the alternatives annually and nothing has as comprehensive and complete a toolset.

The use weasel terms like “such as” and “may include” are great big red flags.

“Your vehicle purchase may include items such as a steering wheel and brakes.”

berniedurfee··on Cancel Adobe if you are a creative under NDA with your clients
Not to mention there realistically aren’t any alternatives. For what it’s worth, their products are unfortunately still best in class in most categories.

berniedurfee··on FBI Raids Big Corporate Landlord over Nationwide Rent Hikes
It seems like coordinating the supply of available units is the real evil (and maybe illegal) part.

Pricing information is public, but inventory is typically not, at least in this context.

A cabal deliberately keeping supply down to drive prices up in a particular region seems like the real issue.

berniedurfee··on Google Search Is Now a Giant Hallucination
Recursive garbage in, garbage out.
berniedurfee··on Google Search Is Now a Giant Hallucination
My favorite part of Copilot is when it auto-completes a call to a function that does exactly what I need to do, like magic!

Except that function doesn't exist and never did.

LLMs don't know what they don't know, so they just make something up because they have to say something. The danger is that most people don't understand that's how they work and don't known when to call BS.

This is where I think companies have a responsibility. To ensure that _every_ response has a disclaimer that the answer from their AI could be right or completely wrong and it's up to the user to figure that out, because AI can't at the moment.

berniedurfee··on Google Search Is Now a Giant Hallucination
That describes the whole internet. It was never meant to be anything more, so that's what we got.

Which was fine, until we had the bright idea of feeding it all into a neural network as a collection of facts.

Then we gave that neural network a voice and a personality. It spoke with the utmost confidence as the expert on any subject.

Truth, lies, facts and falsehoods all blended together and regurgited in an infinite stream of babble.

I vacillate between LLMs being an interesting fad with limited usefulness and an apocalypse that'll throw the world into chaos. I'm back on the fence again I suppose, leaning towards the latter.

berniedurfee··on I organized a 20-acre game of Capture the Flag
Did this at camp in the way deep woods. The troop I was in was sort of “outside” the mainstream campers.

It was a blast though. So many good memories. I would definitely recommend it if you’ve got the space.

berniedurfee··on OpenAI departures: Why can’t former employees talk?
That’s a really good point. A variation of the Streisand Effect.

Makes you wonder what misdeeds they’re trying so hard to hide.

berniedurfee··on OpenAI departures: Why can’t former employees talk?
Sounds like retaliation to me.
berniedurfee··on Slack AI Training with Customer Data
Right? I take Slack and Salesforce at their word. They’re good companies and look out for the best interests of their customers. They have my complete trust.

Lol, my favorite corpo-speak.

I’m not eating a steak and have no plans to eat a steak. Ask again tomorrow.

berniedurfee··on Department of Justice says Boeing may be criminally liable in 737 MAX crashes
How much money ya got?
berniedurfee··on Department of Justice says Boeing may be criminally liable in 737 MAX crashes
“… splitting off bits of the company and massive outsourcing to screw labor as hard as possible.”

I think that’s the key point. I don’t think Boeing could have built _any_ aircraft successfully with that business strategy and culture. If not MCAS, it would have been something else.

berniedurfee··on The most talented person in the world
I agree, but I just don’t see an alternative future if we want to maintain an open platform for the global exchange of ideas.

I also don’t feel like this changes the privacy debate. I’m not naive enough to think Google and 1000 other data brokers don’t know exactly who I am.

Having a verifiably unique digital identity wouldn’t change that fact. I’d still want to control when and how data associated with my identity is monetized.

Maybe regulators can force Google et al to digitally watermark data before they sell it, so if I find it elsewhere without my permission I can trace it back to Google and seek remuneration.

I think the only way we get the internet back is to hold everyone accountable that wants to participate.

I was thinking the other day if lab grown wood would be viable, like lab grown meat.

Maybe genetically engineered trees that all grow in nominal dimensions like Minecraft trees.

berniedurfee··on The most talented person in the world
I think it’s the only way forward. I wrote a blog post about this recently.

I think abandoning anonymity is the only way forward and I think it’ll be glorious.

berniedurfee··on NYU professors who defended vaping didn't disclose ties to Juul
Quitting nicotine ends up being a lifetime battle for most people in my experience.

I’ve know too many people who simply cannot quit smoking, even when it’s clear they’re rotting from the inside out.

Nicotine addiction is on an entirely different level than caffeine.

berniedurfee··on Tesla conducting more layoffs, including entire Supercharger team
Same.

In fact my biggest worry is that the software will be abandoned and as cars age, edge case bugs will appear, but there’ll be no way to fix them.

There’s going to need to be a robust aftermarket for vehicle software.

Though, I don’t know if I’d trust some random EBay dongle or even Dorman to patch my drive-by-wire steering that’s been pulling to the left a bit in a 15 year old Tesla.

berniedurfee··on Tesla conducting more layoffs, including entire Supercharger team
I’ve never had nor heard of anyone having an issue with a foreign object breaking a side window. Is it common?

For a time GE referred to itself as a 124 year old startup and acted as such.

It didn’t end well.
