Fastmail
berdon··on Transitioning Away from Google Services
Fwiw, I switched from gmail two years ago and it was relatively painless. It took a couple hours and there were a handful of websites that didn’t allow changing emails (as usernames) but otherwise it was fine. And worth it to no longer get spam.
berdon··on Transitioning Away from Google Services
I've updated my comment with what I use for hosting my site. But my intent was what you gleaned.

Edit: Fastmail even offers website/hosting as a part of your email service. I'm just biased being a developer and cry at the thought of sites or wordpress - knowing all too well that those products bring real value to many, many people.

berdon··on Transitioning Away from Google Services
A few opinionated differences:

- Mail -> Fastmail

- Search -> Kagi

- Photos -> Google Photos (sorry, but...it's fantastic)

- Docs/Sheets/Slides -> Native/Non-Web Microsoft Office

- Keep/Notes -> Logseq

- Chrome -> Firefox or Orion

- News -> Hackernews

- Sites -> Ghost + Digital Ocean

- Authenticator -> Authy

berdon··on SQLite the only database you will ever need in most cases (2021)
I heard a story that the inventor of python was once asked in an interview at Amazon to rate himself from 1-10 in python. The interviewer didn’t know who he was and it was just a standard question. He said 7.

I don’t think you have to be a 10 to be a good. But you might need to be 10 to be exceptional. And I will agree that it would be very challenging to be a 7, let alone an 10, across multiple domains at the same time. Certainly, across months/years one’s focus might wander and thus their exceptionality might as well. Being able to adapt and pick up new things at a 7 level though - is the real FSD.

But I see your point and agree with you about the shallowing of the FSD term.

You misunderstood my post - I was trying to make your point - there is always someone better. Just because you haven’t doesn’t mean others can’t.
berdon··on SQLite the only database you will ever need in most cases (2021)
No whiteboard, music video, or a published novel yet.

But, come now, his point was he’d never worked with a full stack developer and that they don’t exist.

berdon··on SQLite the only database you will ever need in most cases (2021)
Fwiw, I’ve used all of those in my career, extensively here and there. I’ve written many thousands of lines of bash scripts. Even written my own php-for-bash-script style code tags that support arbitrary shells. I’ve written my own log based distributed kv store, gone down the YouTube trail of writing my own db, gone through the angular and react iterations, deep dove in docker, docker compose, k8s, crds and custom handlers, and handled infrastructure via infra as code and with a control plane.

I also have a wife and a 2.5 year old.

It’s certainly possible if you don’t stop yourself.

berdon··on Ask HN: Gmail having spam problems for anybody else?
Yes, probably for the last 3 years. I switched to Fastmail for everything but continue to monitor the old gmail account. It now only gets the spam emails. Reporting as spam or phishing has never blocked anything.

I can’t recommend Fastmail enough.

berdon··on Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
Kagi.com - paid for, ad free, searching.

I don’t work for Kagi, just a very, very happy user.

berdon··on Proxmox
I recently bought a Beelink U59 and set up Proxmox VE on it. I ended up running ~11 different VMs for my smart home set up, pi.hole, a local K8s cluster, etc.

Now I have two Beelinks running in a two node cluster. I took notes on the entire set up and hope to write a blog or two detailing the setup.

berdon··on Business Insider: Amazon is gutting its voice-assistant Alexa
This makes sense based on my experiences with Alexa.

Starting in the last two years it has increasingly, and aggressively, started “advertising” skills and products following a voice request. So much so that I began looking into alternative voice engines.

Now I know why it was ramping up so quickly.

berdon··on What happened when my wife died
I wish you success! Keep trying!
berdon··on What happened when my wife died
You might consider going to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. It’s world renowned for diagnosis. My wife had various, random symptoms and all local doctors were either baffled or suggesting absurd things in desperation. In two days a doctor at Mayo correctly diagnosed the issue and offered suggestions on treatment that worked. The local doctors were both disbelieving and angry.

Diagnosis was POTS (brought on by pregnancy) and the solution was exercise. Most doctors gravitated to a cardiological issue and prescribed various blood pressure medicine - none of which helped.

Aside from actual medical capability, the place is astoundingly futuristic. The entire process is streamlined. Everything is done within a few days, doctors and lab visits are coordinated and scheduled dynamically and in real time, discussions and investigations are immediately synced with an app, etc. It was…mind blowing to say the least.

berdon··on Nobody Knows How Well Homework Works
I rarely had to do homework outside of school. Typically I’d just do it during the class.
berdon··on NeRF: An eventual successor for deepfakes?
Reminds me of Stephenson's "Fall; Or Dodge in Hell" where all digital media is signed by their anonymous author and public keys become synonymous with identities. An entire industry of media curation existed in the book to handle bucketing media as spam, "fake", "true", interesting, etc.
berdon··on 1Password for Visual Studio Code
There’s also https://git-secret.io/ which doesn’t rely on 1Password.
berdon··on Tell HN: Recruiters are lying about remote positions
That is definitionally situational: In my anecdotal situations things happened differently than in your anecdotal situations.
berdon··on Tell HN: Recruiters are lying about remote positions
This sounds situational. I know someone personally that just landed a remote L5 position at Google. I have spoken with dev managers at Facebook who are hiring remote positions. I have spoken with dev managers at Amazon who are hiring remote positions.

My guess is that was the least offensive way the recruiter could come up with to tell you you didn't pass the "bar". And the hiring committee is, afaik, another "bar".

berdon··on Show HN: HN Avatars in 357 bytes
This is pretty fun.
berdon··on Scientist busts myths about how humans burn calories
Anecdotally, I have absolutely ran off a bad diet. I burn ~150-250 calories a mile and have ran off 2000+ calories to eat what I wanted with no discernible increase in weight. Did this for years.

In hindsight, it’s much easier on one’s knees to adjust your diet.

berdon··on Spam blacklisting is out of control
Sure - but these companies aren't doing that. They're sending emails without any means of preventing it, e.g. spam.
berdon··on Spam blacklisting is out of control
But...it is spam? If they don't give the tools necessary to stop the spam (unsubscribe or a link to "received this by mistake") then it's spam - intentional or not.
berdon··on Spam blacklisting is out of control
In 99% of the cases - there is no recourse. In one instance, I tried replying and they asked me to prove my identity as the customer to cancel the emails.
berdon··on Spam blacklisting is out of control
What about situations where your email somehow (mistype) gets set up for someone else's account? I have 2-3 people with similar emails to my previous email address that would mistype and I'd receive their emails. These weren't spam but the companies wouldn't offer _any_ way to fix this.

My recourse is to just flag them as spam in gmail.

berdon··on Firefox 96
I don't blame Firefox here though I do believe this was a change to perhaps the strictness or level of introspection. I've observed two websites with similar issues.

Either way, I'm a-ok with these types of changes even at the expense of my time in remembering the cause and the solution.

berdon··on Firefox 96
Sigh. Switching from "Strict" to "Standard" in the Firefox security settings "fixes" it. Or disabling Enhanced Protection for the individual website.
berdon··on Firefox 96
Nope, restart didn't fix it. Seems like most CORS requests are failing; for example on LinkedIn.
