berberous··on FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried to be released on $250M bail
I think bail norms probably vary by jurisdiction, etc., and your assumptions are not correct.

My guess is he was not required to post full collateral, i.e. the only collateral here is the home, and then Sam, his parents, and two others posted essentially an unsecured guarantee for the full $250M, such that the government could recover up that amount from any assets held by any of those parties. While unsecured, note that the government probably has priority over any creditors and could and would seize any assets of those parties per the guarantee.

berberous··on FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried to be released on $250M bail
But that 10% is a non-recoverable fee, right? It seems insane they would have agreed to pay a third party $25M as a non-recoverable fee.
berberous··on Schizophrenia: The new etiological synthesis
Similarly interesting:

“The striking difference was that while many of the African and Indian subjects registered predominantly positive experiences with their voices, not one American did. Rather, the U.S. subjects were more likely to report experiences as violent and hateful – and evidence of a sick condition.“

berberous··on Schizophrenia: The new etiological synthesis
I am skeptical that most suicidal people, who may idealize or even follow through on shooting or hanging themselves, would willingly let themselves be eaten by a lion. Fight or flight adrenaline in the face of big cats feels like a likely effective cure for suicidal ideation…
berberous··on Ask HN: Is your memory as bad as mine?
I think it’s really just another trait the exists on a bell curve, e.g. one can be tall (right of bell curve’s normal distribution), but have a poor memory (left on bell curve).

berberous··on Studies find automatic braking can cut crashes over 40%
This would lose all communicative benefits. Teaching a young inexperienced driver “just always keep one car length” where one = safe, is meaningless.

I don’t know you, but I believe a majority of people underestimate safe stopping distance. That’s why the webpage I posted, which is one of many similar ones, exist. That’s also in part why there are so many accidents.

People are also bad at estimating feet, so telling someone keep 80 feet is also not helpful.

But people are pretty good at estimating how many cars can fit between them and the next car.

So telling someone, hey, you are tailgating that guy and only one car could fit in front of you, but you need 10 car lengths to be safe, has a lot more communicative power.

berberous··on Studies find automatic braking can cut crashes over 40%
Have you ever looked up stopping distances?

https://www.automotive-fleet.com/driver-care/239402/driver-c...

I don’t know how accurate the above is, but it suggest that the stopping distance at 40mph is 5-9 car lengths, so I have to agree with the above poster that if you are routinely leaving one car length and your car system is freaking out, you are probably driving unsafely.

Keep in my that statistically this could work out for you fine for 20+ years before one day you get into accident, and presumably blaming the driver who suddenly stopped mid turn.

Check out watchpeopledie or idiotsincars for plenty of videos of what could go wrong. I recall one video of exactly this issue — an idiot SUV stopped mid turn in the middle of a lane, clearly a bad driver. And then another driver t-boned her because he didn’t have enough distance to stop, also cleary partially at fault IMO.

I know people with lifelong pain from minor auto accidents. Don’t have that be you, or cause that for someone else. What do you lose by keeping some more space between you and the next car?

berberous··on FTX fiasco sparks billions of dollars of outflows from exchanges
Crypto.com has 20% of their reserves in SHIB since that’s what their users own 1:1. That’s the correct approach; you would prefer they gamble with their customer’s assets by swapping a portion to more blue chip crypto like ETH?
berberous··on Crypto.com “accidentally” sent $400M worth of ETH to a wrong address
Yes, but not always:

berberous··on Crypto.com preliminary audit shows 20% of its assets are in shiba inu coin
Doesn’t this just mean that 20% of customer assets are in SHIB? I meant that’s depressing to learn, but that’s the customers’ problem and not the exchange’s if so.

berberous··on Physicians’ attitudes about caring for people with disabilities
I am not a doctor or chemist so I do not want to speak definitively, but I highly doubt most common drugs (Xanax, Advil, etc) really lose much efficacy past their expiration date (at least within some reasonable time, like 10-15 years). Happy to be shown evidence otherwise. I wouldn’t rely on this for say, antibiotics to treat an infection, but I wouldn’t hesitate to take a 5 year old Xanax.
berberous··on Kanye West is buying Parler
Why not both? I agree with you that all of those people know how to play the media to their benefit, but Kanye is also clearly bipolar and currently in one of his episodes, and Trump also clearly is the clinical definition of narcissistic personality disorder. The Kardashians and Elon have their flaws too, but I don’t think they rise to the level of clinical issues in the way that Kanye and Trump do.
berberous··on It is time to legalise cocaine: The costs of prohibition outweigh the benefits
The difference between the two is not chemical but speed of effect [0]. This can lead to crack users being much more likely to become junkies than coke users, and thus more likely to result in bad behaviors like stealing to support a habit or losing a job. To use an imperfect analogy, while chemically the same (for at least some of the following examples), there is a large difference between dabs and a joint, straight vodka and beer/wine, injecting opiates vs opiate pills, and smoking meth vs taking adderal, and the stereotypical types of users for each.

[O] “by snorting through nasal passages, the drug appears in the blood three to five minutes after use, with about 30 to 60 percent of the drug being absorbed into the bloodstream. Maximum physiological effects occur within 40 minutes, and maximum psychotropic effects occur within 20 minutes. Physiological and psychotropic effects fade in 45 to 60 minutes. By comparison, crack cocaine is not soluble in water and therefore can only be readily smoked. Smoking the drug produces a quicker onset, shorter duration, and more intense effects than snorting powder cocaine.61 Facilitated by the large surface area of the lungs’ air sacs, smoked crack cocaine is absorbed almost immediately into the bloodstream and reaches the brain in only 19 seconds, with 30 to 60 percent of the drug being absorbed into the bloodstream. Maximum physiological effects from smoking crack cocaine are attained within two minutes; maximum psychotropic effects occur within one minute. These effects are experienced for a shorter period of time than for snorted powder cocaine, i.e. between 10 and 20 minutes, but are similar to injected powder cocaine. In sum, although both powder cocaine and crack cocaine are potentially addictive, administering the drug in a manner that maximizes the effect (e.g., injecting or smoking) increases the risk of addiction. It is this difference in typical methods of administration, not differences in the inherent properties of the two forms of the drugs, that makes crack cocaine more potentially addictive to typical users. Smoking crack cocaine produces quicker onset of, shorter-lasting, and more intense effects than snorting powder cocaine. These factors in turn result in a greater likelihood that the user will administer the drug more frequently to sustain these shorter “highs” and develop an addiction.”

That actually seems to set the language for it to transcribe (as opposed to it guessing), with the following triggering a translation to English:

AirPods Pro can do that:

In case you don’t know, you can at least PM the MidJourney bot so you have an uncluttered workspace.

It’s clearly personally preference, but I loathe Discord but love it for MidJourney. As you said, there’s an interactive element where I see other people doing cool things and adapting part of their prompts and vice versa. It really is fun. And when you do it in a PM, you have all your efforts saved. DALL-E is pretty clunky in that you have to manually save an image or lose it once your history rolls off.

berberous··on DALL·E now available in beta
I think both have strengths and weaknesses, but I don’t disagree DALL-E in most instances is technically better at matching prompts. But I often enjoyed, artistically, the results of MidJourney more; it just felt fun to use and explore.
berberous··on DALL·E now available in beta
I think they are reacting to competition. MidJourney is amazing, was easier to get into, gives you commercial rights, and frankly I found more fun to use and even better output in most instances.
