berberich··on Captain Marvel throwback site
It takes place in the 90's.
berberich··on An Old Idea, Revived: Starve Cancer to Death
Tim Ferriss had Dr. Dom D'Agostino on his podcast late last year[1], where they talked about this subject in-depth. I thought it was a fascinating conversation and a great introduction to the topic.

You can absolutely charge money for this if you solve a painful problem for businesses: http://creditcardjs.com
berberich··on Overcast – A powerful yet simple iPhone podcast player
I've also found that Downcast has given me the most control over my podcasts.

One thing I haven't found yet, though, is a client that offers a playlist or podcast level setting where I can say I want to download the oldest unplaced episode for a show. iTunes has such a sync setting for TV shows, for example, and it would be very handy for podcasts where I'm working my way through an archive.

There is probably a limited audience for such a feature, however, so I'll probably have to keep waiting.

berberich··on Show HN: I made an Imgur plugin for Snagit, screengrab tool
I was just searching for a plugin like this the other week, after I upgraded to Snagit 12. Thanks for making it!
berberich··on Managing Pricing
I recommend taking a look at this post, along with the rest of the site. Lots of great insights: http://blog.priceintelligently.com/blog/bid/198499/Stop-Per-...

I believe it was Patrick who recommended that on Twitter the other week.

berberich··on Google Shames Slow U.S. ISPs With Its New YouTube Video Quality Report

There's also KiTTY [http://kitty.9bis.net/], another great fork of PuTTY.
berberich··on A Mysterious Patch Of Light Shows Up In The North Dakota Dark
It's actually Wisconsin (where the Mendard's headquarters is[1]), not Texas, but I don't think that affects your point.

Walmart is paying $17/hour, too. With unemployment below 1%, it's going to take awhile before labor supply and demand fall into equilibrium.

berberich··on A Mysterious Patch Of Light Shows Up In The North Dakota Dark
I had the same thought six years ago, well before Bakken was developed [http://berbs.us/x/kvlks]. The state also has massive coal reserves, a large hydroelectric dam, and vast fields of wind turbines.

If it was a good idea then, it's an even better idea now.

berberich··on Google Disabling Exchange Sync for Free Accounts
You're looking at the wrong page: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gappssync

I would expect this to keep working. According to the original article, this affects mobile devices using the free Google accounts.

berberich··on iOS 6.0 Causes CDN Overages
As pointed out above, 6.0.1 fixes this, so upgrading shouldn't be an issue.

berberich··on Textmate2 Goes Open Source
You can't currently pay for version 2 - it's in alpha, and isn't close to being released. And, as mentioned above, owners of version 1 were automatically supposed to get a license for Textmate2.
berberich··on Textmate2 Goes Open Source
Marco talked about the current status of TM2 on Build and Analyze a few weeks ago[1], and from what he said, it sounds like it has some structural performance problems that weren't getting addressed. In addition, he said that requests for bug fixes and features were constantly getting rejected by the developer, which to me hints at either a loss in interest in the project, or a lack of time to devote to developing it.

berberich··on #BoycottApple trending on Google plus due to Galaxy Nexus ban
Nilay Patel at The Verge had a good post[1] about this when it first came up in April 2011. Besides the fact that the F700 was announced at MWC in February 2007 (after the iPhone was announced in January), There are huge differences in the interfaces that matter in trade dress and trademark cases.

Basically, you wouldn't confuse an iPhone with an F700, while Samsung seemed to design Touch Wiz specifically to do that.

berberich··on The relationship between Readability and Instapaper
One Chrome (and Safari) extension that I found helps is called Page One [https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pojkjlgamiogkhagab...]. It will automatically redirect your browser to the single-page/print view for a number of popular sites (21 as of today).
berberich··on The relationship between Readability and Instapaper
I do the same thing, usually with multi-page articles, since Readability will stitch pages into one long one before I save to Instapaper.
berberich··on Readability service to become free
I'm wondering the same thing. Their original business model of splitting revenue with the authors was interesting, but I'm guessing they didn't get many subsribers.

I was interested in supporting them, but because I already support Marco @ Instapaper with a monthly donation, the Readability subscription (was it $5 or $7 per month) wasn't worth it for myself.

berberich··on Introducing Instapaper 4.0 for iPad and iPhone
Marco has another bookmarklet currently available for testing by subscribers that lets you send individual articles directly to your Kindle, bypassing your Instapaper queue entirely. I haven't tried this yet, however.
berberich··on iPhone 4S First Weekend Sales Top Four Million
I'd be very surprised if the iPhone 5 was released anytime before next July. More likely is that it'll be a fall release again.
berberich··on The patent system isn’t broken — we are
There's a difference between patents that happen to cover software and a carved-out subsection of patents designated specifically for software by law. We currently have the former - Niley believes we should have the latter.
berberich··on The patent system isn’t broken — we are
Just to clarify, Nilay was a lawyer prior to Engadget, but he's no longer practicing.

Also, I believe his specialty was copyright, not patent, law.

Based on what I've heard him say on the podcast and read in this essay, it seems to me that his main objective is to show that this is a complex issue that can't be simplified down to "good" or "bad".

berberich··on Why software patents are not fixable
What about the pharmaceutical industry? Third parties are likely able to reproduce and sell generic versions of drugs within months of the original version being put on the market.

Without patent protection, that's not enough time to come close to covering the R&D costs, assuming the market for the branded drug shrinks in the face of the much cheaper generics.

berberich··on United States loses AAA credit rating from S&P
I don't think this is correct. Planet Money did a recent podcast on this very subject (Would A Downgrade Matter?)[1], and they concluded that a downgrade from AAA to AA+ doesn't matter very much in the long run. Yes, it's somewhat embarrassing, and interest rates are likely to go up _slightly_, but that's about it.

The big leap is from "investment grade" securities to "junk bonds" ('BB'/'Ba' or less). We're still a long way from there.
