You still need the land to put it on.

They also have a 1000 sq ft 3 bed 2 bath for $47k.
beojan··on Visa and Mastercard agree to lower average credit card interchange fee below 1%
You could set one tax included price, so the actual revenue you get would vary slightly in different places. Costs already vary based on location so I don't see a huge issue there.

Of course this does change the incentives for localities setting their sales tax, and they might be inclined to set them higher if the cost isn't borne by local residents. I don't know if that's a bad thing, if that money improves local services and / or lowers other taxes.

beojan··on Pixel Tablet
1:1 then meant a 100% markup compared to the US price. That isn't accounted for by 17.5% VAT. I can't imagine expenses were really twice as high.
beojan··on Pixel Tablet
Back when it was $2 = £1 prices seemed to be converted at a 1 - 1 rate (and VAT was 17.5% then). This seems to be a long standing problem.
beojan··on Ask HN: 1Password is backing out of the lifetime license I bought. Can I sue?
Was it really tens of thousands? Looks like 1password 7 standalone was $50, not sure what it used to be when the standalone license was the only option.
beojan··on Inkscape is hiring: Accelerating the GTK4 migration
If they find out every Gtk3 developer moved to a different framework that's a good sign they should do the same with Inkscape.
beojan··on If we lose the Internet Archive, we’re screwed
> I wonder if there needs to be a cultural equivalent, where a repository of digital or physical artifacts is "too big to fail" because of the negative cultural impact their failure would have.

In the US that would be the Library of Congress with its Mandatory Deposit requirement.

beojan··on Heat pump sales outpaced gas furnace sales in the US in 2022
If you look at the numbers that's clearly not the minimum COP. I'm not sure what it is, I think it's the COP when operating at minimum power.
beojan··on Plan S: An open-access initiative shaking up science publishing (2021)
For Physics at least, I think the arXiv would have pretty much everything.
beojan··on Metric Paper [video]
The foot is convenient for more than just human scale things. The speed of light is 1 ft/ns to within 2% and the speed of sound in air is 1 ft/ms to about 12%.

beojan··on T-Mobile will start charging a $35 fee on all new activations and upgrades

beojan··on The hotel I booked online became a homeless shelter and no one told me
You should book directly with an airline who will book all the connections so long as they're all with partner airlines (i.e usually in the same alliance). Often you can even book with an airline in that alliance that you won't even be flying to possibly get cheaper tickets.

Some OTAs will book connections on airlines that aren't partnered as separate tickets so if you're incoming flight is delayed and you miss a connection, tough luck.

beojan··on Why we chose not to release Stable Diffusion 1.5 as quickly
Definitions are what matter, they're the reason you can use words and I can understand what you mean by them.

"Open source" has a definition (https://opensource.org/osd) and the GPL meets it, because it doesn't prevent derived worries from being distributed under the same license.

beojan··on Why we chose not to release Stable Diffusion 1.5 as quickly
A lot of open source software authors don't want this either because it can circumvent copyleft and attribution requirements.

Also, discriminating like you suggest would make those licenses closed source by definition.

beojan··on I asked Signal motivations for SMS removal
> The only large group of people who still primarily use SMS to communicate person-to-person is Android users in the USA.

This is precisely why RCS and MMS support aren't important. I just need Signal to deliver SMS authentication codes and notifications. For person-to-person communications I'll use Signal protocol.

The US isn't the holdout. Astronomers everywhere use light years and parsecs. Particle physicists everywhere use barns. Chemists everywhere use Angstroms.

The UK has a Zelle like service called Paym that works on top of Faster Payments and means you don't need to share your bank details.

beojan··on The euro has tumbled near parity to the US dollar
A Euro isn't exactly one dollar, it just rounds to 1.00 to 2 decimal places.

Qt on KDE and the appropriate GTK version on Gnome, yes.

In practice, Qt looks much more native on Gnome than GTK does on KDE so you should go with Qt.

Some do, namely the Scottish and Northern Irish note issuing banks. These have to be fully backed though.

Private healthcare in the UK would have many of the problems you identify with the NHS if it couldn't pass anything difficult to the NHS.

beojan··on Debian decides to allow secret votes
Debian uses the Condorcet method, so I don't think this is actually a problem.
beojan··on Accounting for violent conflict risk in planetary defense decisions (2020)
> > an [sic] NEO

That's perfectly correct grammatically. It just means whoever wrote that pronounces it N-E-O rather than "neo".

As to your question, I think yes since I expect the trajectory would be very different.
