benterix··on GLM-5.1: Towards Long-Horizon Tasks
> Obvious quantization issues

Devil's advocate: why shouldn't they do it if OpenAI, Anthropic and Google get away with playing this game?

benterix··on Are We Idiocracy Yet?
> I like money

I'm sorry, I might be a bit stupid but I haven't understood your comment.

benterix··on The cult of vibe coding is dogfooding run amok
> It shows that you can build a crazy popular & successful product while violating all the traditional rules about “good” code.

It shows that given enough hype and fomo you can convince many people to do this tool to build various types of things while the quality of this code suffers.

It's the opposite of how non-vibecoding companies and individuals are using LLMs to improve the quality of the code.

benterix··on Adobe modifies hosts file to detect whether Creative Cloud is installed
> Autodesk has been a FAR more abusive company for FAR longer, but it's what we're stuck with - although the emergence of the BIM Workbench (Building Information Modeling) with the release of FreeCAD 1.0 [0] and the continued development of BlenderBIM (oh, now called BonsaiBIM) [1] at least gives some hope.

I believe AutoCAD is the epitome of what is wrong with Autodesk. It's expensive, there is no permanent license, there is basically no real alternative, and they aggressively go after pirated copies.

If I were a vibecoder, instead of silly toys like a half-broken compiler that nobody uses, I'd focus all my energy and tokens on creating a real Autodesk alternative. And if it really worked, including seamless witch, the authors would quickly make tons of money.

benterix··on I Am Not A Number. In memory of the more than 72,000 Palestinians killed
> ow, when ukraine shows that they are strong, people on the internet look horrified how russian soldiers are annihilated with fpv drones and scream about how such things are war crimes and should be stopped.

Sorry who are those people and where I can find them? In my bubble Ukraine is still the victim who lost 20% of its land, and Russians are still bombing the country daily, both military and civilian targets. All male Ukrainians are basically prisoners in their own country who can only pray they don't die soon.

benterix··on I Am Not A Number. In memory of the more than 72,000 Palestinians killed
Which countries? Negative submissions about China and Russia get flagged near-instantly. Frequently also about the USA. People don't like a topic - they flag it.
benterix··on The Claude Code Leak
And their strategy kind of worked, right? CC is the most popular agentic coding tool. Anthropic faces competition from OpenAI (potentially better model, weaker TUI tool) and from the rest (potentially worse models, weaker TUIs). So their strategy is to develop both: make their closed model and closed tool better than competition so that when people want to vibceode they will choose their ecosystem.
benterix··on The Claude Code Leak
Yeah, whenever I see "It's not... it's...", I catch myself instinctively dismissing the content as AI slop, but upon reflection I'm not so sure, it used to be a normal phrase.

But I do take extra care to avoid LLM-speak as much as I can.

benterix··on GitHub backs down, kills Copilot pull-request ads after backlash
> They created an amazing technology that oftentimes is indistinguishable from magic and then use it to deliver ads

The people who created the tech and the ones that use it for ads in this case are two different groups - the first one is from Google (initial discovery) and OpenAI (realizing the potential of discovery and developing it into a product), whereas the second is the same company that decided that building ads into an operating system is an excellent idea.

benterix··on People inside Microsoft are fighting to drop mandatory Microsoft Account
But remote account is just one of the many evils they cane up in the last decade or so. Honestly, not sure if the net benefit for humanity is negative if Windows gradually disappears.
benterix··on Regular army and reserve components enlistment program: Summary of change
> You can no more win a war, than you can win an earthquake

This is quite clear for younger people who grew in an interconnected world. But some old folks (73 y.o., 79 y.o.) seem to live in the old world where winning, or an illusion of it, is still a thing.

benterix··on Mystery jump in oil trading ahead of Trump post draws scrutiny
>> Elect a Democrat in 2028

> Does everyone still believe this will be possible/happen/allowed by the current regime?

Note the previous riot was unsuccessful. And probably he'll try something similar this time so the relevant services know what to expect.

benterix··on Epoch confirms GPT5.4 Pro solved a frontier math open problem
To have a proper discussion we would have to define the word "novel" and that's a challenge in itself. In any case, millions of poeple tried to ask LLMs to do something creative and the results were bland. Hence my conclusion LLMs aren't good for that. But I'm also open they can be an element of a longer chain that could demonstrate some creativity - we'll see.
benterix··on Epoch confirms GPT5.4 Pro solved a frontier math open problem
This is a long read on things most people here know at least in some form. Could you pint to a particular fragment or a quote?
benterix··on Epoch confirms GPT5.4 Pro solved a frontier math open problem
I'm very happy to say calculators are far better than me in calculations (to a given precision). I'm happy to admit computers are so much better than me in so many aspects. And I have problem saying LLMs are very helpful tools able to generate output so much better than mine in almost every field of knowledge.

Yet, whenever I ask it to do something novel or creative, it falls very short. But humans are ingenious beasts and I'm sure or later they will design an architecture able to be creative - I just doubt it will be Transformer-based, given the results so far.

benterix··on PC Gamer recommends RSS readers in a 37mb article that just keeps downloading
While I agree with you in general, I am one of the very few people who do it for the small amount of sites I support. This is not a smart decision from the technical point of view but it's been fine so far.
benterix··on Full Disclosure: A Third (and Fourth) Azure Sign-In Log Bypass Found
It's true, they lied. But, paradoxically, in this case, while they lied about details, the conclusion is still true: Azure is very far from AWS and GCP as far as security is concerned. I have my own suspicions why it is so, but the reasons are not important, what counts is the final conclusion: if you really care for security, you'd better chose one of the other two.
benterix··on Astral to Join OpenAI
You probably mean AGPL. Companies hated GPL from the start and nothing has changed to this day. But the cloud is specifically against AGPL.
benterix··on Astral to Join OpenAI
Finally someone competent to answer the crucial question. Taken into account the enormous amount of excellent work you did, and the fact that dev tools are hard to monetize, what was your strategy?
benterix··on Denmark was reportedly preparing for full-scale war with the US over Greenland
And, at least regarding the more recent ones in Iraq and Afghanistan, Europe witnessed the largest anti-war protests in history.

From that perspective, the current "emperor is naked" development might be positive in the sense that Europe can relatively soon have enough military power to be taken seriously, and at the same time become impossible to drag into an offensive war because none of its countries wants any war and we only went there because US pressured us into - but now that the USA has became unreliable, there's no reason to sacrifice oneself.

benterix··on Ask HN: How do you deal with people who trust LLMs?
I totally get it. I remember when my daughter first asked about the origin of the world, I was really thinking hard, knowing she expects a simple and possibly a reassuring answer. In the end, I opted for honest and said: "I don't know. But I will show you what people believe, from scientists to religions, and you will decide for yourself". Yes, she was slightly disappointed, but I didn't regret that.
benterix··on What 81,000 people want from AI
I just checked your projects, it looks just like something I was looking for. And I hope in a few weeks the guys from Anthropic will give you what they promised.

However, since we're frank here, I'd say I'll download the most recent release and be very careful about upgrading because I don't put much trust in projects co-created with LLMs. I know there is a full spectrum but I've seen enough and I don't have the resources to check where on the spectrum your project ends up. LLMs are a powerful drug and terribly hard to stop once you start.

benterix··on Denmark was reportedly preparing for full-scale war with the US over Greenland
> when we went to war on their side on their questionable military adventures.

And then they ridiculed us for that.

And then asked for help in another war they just started.

benterix··on Ask HN: How do you deal with people who trust LLMs?
Man, I had a partner who studied philosophy, too. I'd ask a simple question and they'd answer, "Wait, before we even start, we need to define the axioms".

It was fun and interesting but eventually non practical, because other people are not interested into getting deeply into something, they just want a simple answer to a problem at hand and then move on.

benterix··on OpenAI Has New Focus (on the IPO)
Google is doing the same, these managers all use what they know, that is following KPIS like MAUs etc.
benterix··on Federal Cyber Experts Called Microsoft's Cloud "A Pile of Shit", yet Approved It
Yeah but today you can at least have a video call more or less normally. Back then it was a hiccup after a hiccup, it was impossible to work normally, and yet orgs pushed it down everybody's throats as it was bundled.
benterix··on Despite Doubts, Federal Cyber Experts Approved Microsoft Cloud Service
And yet, somehow AWS managed to get this right-ish. They evolved, learned by making mistakes, and created de-facto standards (like object storage protocol) on the way, while at the same time supporting decades-old services. And I'm sure they'll withstand the current AI craze.
benterix··on Reverse-engineering Viktor and making it open source
Which is something that I still, really, fail to comprehend the mechanics of.
benterix··on Reverse-engineering Viktor and making it open source
Yeah, and with each of these, I always wonder, what's the point?
benterix··on Kagi Translate now supports LinkedIn Speak as an output language
The downside of LLMs is that they're so easy and cheap to use they became the first choice for any problem at hand.
